Chocolate Covered Wagon

This place is overpriced and overrated. I went in looking for a treat and decided on the chocolate covered cinnamon bears. I don’t even want to admit how much I spent, because when I ate a couple I realized they were nothing but Sweet’s chocolate cinnamon bears with the price jacked up for nothing but a cheap cellophane bag and a decorative bow. I understand that not all stores can produce all of their own products, but it’s shameless gouging as the same bears can be found at any grocery store at about twice the weight for half of the price that Chocolate Covered Wagon charges. All for what? A cutesy little package. The story is sadly the same for their truffles, which are nothing but the Utah Truffles which can also be found at many ştores.

Everything does here is done in-​house, with the probably exception of baking the pretzels and any of the pre-​packaged candies (ala Jelly Belly, etc.) and other sundries. They seem really proud of the Utah-​basing of the company, so good on them for that. They also do a lot of seasonal and holiday special items, which is a pretty cool touch. The gift baggies of stuff are very, very well presented and might have been my favorite thing out of everything. As you might expect, it is also very heavily based on chocolate and to a lesser degree, caramel.
It is all very, very rich, dense and heavy, which puts a lot of this well out of the range I can comfortably eat as it becomes too much of an overload. Getting anything here will not leave you wanting for a chocolate (and probably caramel) kick and if you’re not fans of one or both of these, you may want to just leave this place alone. No pretenses from them; this is going to be a heavy duty sugar (and calorie) blast. They do also have some sugar free stuff, but it is mostly relegated to a somewhat miniscule area displaced from the rest. If you come into a place like this though, you’re sort of throwing in for that.
Staff was very nice and I liked a lot of the feeling and sentiment behind what they’re trying to do and are doing here. It’s not my type of place and it’s not the best I’ve had (some of it was overly cloying), but I wouldn’t be surprised to find myself browsing the cases for more new stuff I’ve not yet tried…

I visited the Sugarhouse location a couple of weeks ago and bought some truffles from the case. Yes, the expensive ones at $ 2.50 each. When I got home, I found the cashier had mixed up my bag with the next person in line and given me a small bag of caramels, which had a much lower value. I had been charged for the chocolates I selected and had the receipt.
Initially, I wasn’t too bothered by this as, you know, mistakes happen. But still, I wanted to get my money back on the goods I paid for but didn’t receive.
The night of the mix up, I wrote a message on the store’s Facebook page, sent the same message to their ‘Contact Us’ email address and attempted to leave a voicemail at the store where the mix up happened (they had no voicemail).
The next day, I flew out of town for work for 3 months. I could have gone back to the store in the morning but there are no store hours on their website and with this being SLC, I didn’t want to drive 3 miles to chance that it might or might not be open on a Sunday.
After not hearing back from anyone, I called the Sugarhouse store again. They said for me to call back the next day with details from my receipt and they would refund me. Great, I thought.
Next day, call back, speak with another employee who says she can’t refund me, I need to speak with the owner and have to call their other store to speak with her. Not helpful, I thought, but okay, I call the other store.
The other store tell me the owner isn’t there but the guy on the phone took a message and said the owner would call me. He also said I could send the copy of the receipt to the owner’s email address and she will respond.
The result is that now it is 10 days since the original problem.
I have made at least 4 phone calls, sent two emails and one FB message.
The outcome: no call, no refund and no email response.
I won’t be back. Once they have your money, they don’t care about their customers, simple as that.

My wife and I went to dinner in Sugarhouse and noticed a Chocolate Covered Wagon shop nearby. After looking over the tasty looking selections we each decided on something. The lady who was busy making chocolates in the back came up to help us. We gave her our order, and as she was ringing it up we both noticed that she did not look well. Her nose was all red around it and she seemed ill. She put our chocolates on the scale and took our money {the entire time never removing or changing her gloves}. Then she then coughed hard in her gloved hand right before grabbing our chocolates {with the same hand… from the top} and placed them in the bag. The palm that she had just coughed in had touched both our chocolates. At that point we left and threw them away. I didn’t want a replacement because I figured all of the candy was probably contaminated by her. As we were leaving she went back to contaminating more sweets with the same money handled/​coughed glove that she was wearing when we first walked in. I emailed the ownership but never received a response. Gross.

I love chocolate and I’m really picky about the chocolate I eat. This place is great. There are plenty of options, even less expensive truffles for those with a small pocket. Plenty of gourmet items. When we were inside, they had just brought out their fresh caramel apples so they sell theirs fresh unlike rocky mountain chocolate… The owner and employees were really friendly and social. Seems like a hoppin place. I also liked that they had old fashioned toys and candy and also the cutest stuffed animals. Their gift baskets are also beautiful!

The people helping us were very nice and helpful. They offered us a sample camel and fudge, we couldn’t resist buying some truffles, dark chocolate of course. The manager told us all about the store’s history. They are a sister company to the Trolley Taffy Station.
We had a few chocolates and they were savory. The store smelt like kennel corn and that drew me in. The caramel fill fudge was amazing, the best that I have ever had. The Caramel Apples look amazing!
It’s some good chocolate which is featured on the Food Network and the Travel Channel.
