Salon 554

As I stood in line at the beauty supply store waiting to pay for my home wax kit and nail polish, one of the associates walked up to me with amazement said, «Wow, your hair is so healthy! I’m jealous! It’s so healthy and it looks really good!» I smiled and thanked her and wondered if she remembered that it was only 6 months ago that she looked at my mane with concern and encouraged me to use hair masks and anything to hydrate my damaged hair. I had just bleached my naturally brunette/​red toned hair and applied a GOLDEN blonde toner. I waited a few days to use a neutral toner which helped my hair go from bright orange to the color of hay with pee yellow undertones. The damage was done. The ends were crispy and falling off. My hair was very frizzy and dry. I had breakage everywhere. So I returned again to the beauty supply store to purchase permanent dark brown hair color. All that damage for nothing! How could it be that only 6 months later, people would be voicing how beautiful my hair is and asking ME for advice?
I had never had any attachment to my hair. I always did the bare minimum necessary to keep it clean and out of my face. I bought whatever shampoo and conditioners smelled good and cut my hair when I felt it was looking out of control. I did however, color my hair. a lot. Every few months I would get the urge to do something new so I would use permanent box hair color like it was just another hair product. I used a flat iron every day without any heat protection because I didn’t know any better. On a tight budget, the first thing to go was any salon service and salon grade hair products. To be honest, I didn’t have a whole lot of care when it came to my hair.
Cassie works at Salon 554 and she convinced me to come in and give her a chance. I was reluctant but since I had been cutting my own hair to save money and did a lot of damage to it with the botched bleach and dye job in the last year, I figured it couldn’t hurt. I walked out of the Salon with much more than just a beautiful cut and style, but a new-​found sense of self worth. As silly as this sounds, I used to think that beautiful luxurious hair was just something natural that came to the beautiful people of the world. As if the Duchess of Cambridge has a basic hair care routine too and the rest is genetics. I, however, need to flat iron and/​or blow dry (if and when I have the time/​energy) otherwise I have frilly hair that waves in all the wrong directions and looks oily by the end of every day. They say a woman’s hair is her glory and for the first time, I feel love for my hair and a sense of true beauty.
The products that Salon 554 carries are only the best and worth every penny! Redken is such a great line that not many have heard of because they put their money into their products, not advertising. I have put a good amount of money into the recommended Redken & Pureology products but the results speak for themselves. The salon has great deals you can utilize in order to make your hair care necessities more affordable. The atmosphere is swanky as well as therapeutic and relaxing which makes my visit every 6 weeks a mini vacation from life. For the first time ever, I can say I have a hair stylist that I go to, listen to and feel close to. Heck, I can say I have a hair stylist! Before Cassie and Salon 554, other than myself or my own parent, my hair had never been cut by the same person twice! I put a lot of TLC into my hair now and I am reminded every day whether someone in line at the grocery store taps me to compliment my hair to when I walk passed a mirror and have to do a double take and stare at my own self in awe at how big, bouncy and shiny my hair is! I am a customer for life!

My teenaged son got his hair cut at salon 554. We had never been there and will never be back. I paid $ 30 for him to get an hour long haircut that was not only not at all what he asked for, but was laughably bad. I had to take him to a chain salon to buzz his hair later that night because he was mortified at the idea of going to school with the poufy bowl cut the stylist at 554 gave him.
I emailed the salon with our experience about a week ago and have heard nothing back. I do not recommend this salon at all as it was the worst haircut I’ve personally ever seen.

I decided I was going to try a new place and came here. One word: Horrible. Please do not waste your time or money! I came in and there was no line so I figured I’d get service soon. I waited 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged my presence. Prices didn’t match the quality and the women there seemed too busy to care about what you actually want. Very stuck up! While I was there 3 other customers had complaints and left less than happy. Surprised they’re still in business actually. They were so disorganized and unprofessional, it seemed like every other product the lady used on my hair she had to go find! I came in for subtle highlights and left with what looked like platinum streaks. They wouldn’t fix it either they told me to set up another appointment… what a joke!

The layout and ambiance were nice, the lighting felt warm and cozy. The service itself was mediocre, probably wont go back.

I made an appointment here for my wedding day hair/​makeup. They call me two weeks before the wedding to tell me that I need to reschedule because they have an unexpected class that came up. They apologize and tell me they’ll give me a coupon to come back in another time. When asked why they couldn’t honor the appointment since they scheduled me, their reply was the class was «mandatory.» If you have a mandatory class that is coming up not only should you know when it is you should honor any appointments made that day and make an exception for the mandatory class. People cannot reschedule their wedding hair/​makeup because your salon is unaware of its commitments. I do not recommend… try a salon that knows how to provide proper customer service.

Bad first experience and only experience. I walked in hoping to get a haircut. I was ignored for 5 minutes. There was no receptions. Three ladies working and not one could acknowledge me with a hello. Finally after a game of you take him no you take him I left with a bad overpriced haircut. The lady’s there are rude and unwelcoming.

I had been going to that salon for almost 2 years but recently made the decision to not come back. Since the beginning I have been going to the owner Sarah, my first cut was great but unfortunately it hasn’t been great since.
The second to last time I was there with Sarah I asked for a balayage color, she didn’t go as light as I wanted so we planned on going lighter the next time I came in.
The last time I came in my appointment was a 4:15pm for a color and cut.
When I got there she already had another lady waiting in foils and she was coloring another mans hair, she put me on her chair and I reminded her that I wanted to balayage but I wanted to go ligher. She quickly put the bleach product in my hair and told her assistant to wash me out at 35 minutes.
Her assistant and her got busy with the two other people they had booked at the same time and so I sat with the product in my hair for a few minutes short of an hour.
Once they remembered, Sarah quickly told her assistant to wash me out and kept saying «It’s beautiful, you’ll love it» which from the fact that I sat there for double the time I was supposed to I knew was probably her covering up the fact that my hair was too light.
That same day Sarah had some family in the salon and had her assistant make them drinks while I sat at the wash bowl for 10 minutes for the assistant to finish washing my hair out.
When her assistant came back she started to put toner in my hair and after a few minutes leaned over to another hair dresser and asked «when am I supposed to wash this out?», the two hair dressers proceeded to have a conversation about my hair and how they weren’t sure what to do but eventually decided that it was time to wash out the toner.
Sarah came by at that point when she was done with her other appointments and again mentioned «Karla, it looks great, you will love it».
She gave me an ok cut, I requested bangs with no color but the bangs had color and when i tried to ask for her to cut my bangs more and to shape them, she said it wouldn’t work because of the way my hair was even though I had bangs before and loved them.
I left really disliking my hair but I thought that it would just take time to grow on me.
When I got to work the next day and I saw that the color was extremely blonde and very streaky I was so distraught that I had to put my hair up and pin my bangs up, I went to a friends house that is also a hair dresser and she suggested I call the salon and get it fixed.
When I did that Sarah let me know that she wouldn’t be able to fit me in for a week so I scheduled with another hair dresser Kerri.
Kerri was AMAZING and gave me the color that I wanted and she thinned and texturized my hair, which Sarah didn’t do.
If I were to go back it would be for Kerri but I think i’m just done with that salon.

Great place, friendly and knowledgable staff, and real fabulous work they do! My only reason for 4 stars. It had happened a few times that I get pawned off on someone whom I can only assume is new. While I understand the business of the salon, I didn’t appreciate having an inexperienced person «finishing me» (ie: shampooing and drying me). The girl was so sweet and kind, but took about an hour and a half to wash and dry my hair. She was definitely new, so no hard feelings. I just wish the professional that started my hair, was also the one to finish it.

The stylist, Carie, is very competent and pleasant to deal with. So is her assistant executing color etc. But the receptionist is a piece of art. Don’t try to get an appointment changed, she will simply put you on hold and five minutes later hang up on you. When I called back a second time, she had no recollection of my first call. She does not know the word sorry or is capable to make a client feel appreciated. I don’t pay $ 150 for bad service. I will miss you Carie!

Highly unprofessional conduct and disorganized. My wife was over charged the first time she went for switching a service and this last time she had rescheduled an appointment but when she went in for the new one was told that she hadn’t called back when she had and they where going to charge her for a no show. Because she was getting her hair done with a gift card she had to wait an hour and had a different stylist do her hair from the one who was supposed to, they basically accused her of lying about calling back.
The only redeeming quality is that the stylists employed by the owner are good at what they do, the colour done both times was good and the haircut was good. What we experienced was that they are not upfront with pricing, it seems the problem is in the management of the salon.

I unfortunately had the worst salon experience of my life at this salon. I was scheduled to receive a partial highlight and haircut with Sarah, the owner. When I arrived at 7:00pm, she was just starting on another clients haircut and told me it would be «just a few minutes.»
I waited about 30 minutes then got up to leave because she obviously felt like my time was not valuable. She rushed over to stop me and pleaded with me to stay, advising I would only have to wait another 5 minutes and asked me if I wanted a glass of wine. Fifteen minutes later, she hurriedly was putting foils in my hair and promptly sat me under the dryer while she did a Brazilian Blowout on yet another client. About 30 minutes after the foils were put in, my scalp started burning and I told her that I really needed someone to take the foils out because of this. She became super annoyed and asked a colleague to remove the foils and wash my hair.
After being in this salon for over 1.5 hours already, I asked to pay and declined to wait it out for my haircut. I didn’t care that my hair was wet. I went to the counter and Sarah again pleaded for me to stay for the haircut. I had enough and asked for my bill and was outraged that she was charging me $ 90. I left no tip.
When I got home and dried my hair, the color was not what I had asked for (I asked for an ashy blonde and she gave me a reddish/​golden blonde), my scalp was excoriated in several places, and the color had bled through some of the foils, giving me a horizontal line of color in a few areas.
Avoid this salon at all costs.
Update: I just read the owners response and wow… My review is honest and straightforward like all my other reviews on Unilocal.I do not work in the beauty industry in any way. Enough said.

My first experience, I was pretty uncertain. I received a large gift card and decided to get my hair done. Rachel was great and walked me through her suggested hair cut. I liked it, not in love with it. The price is out of my range, had I bought her recommended products I would no longer have a gift card. Service is friendly, lots of options, but way out of budget for North Salem.

I love Salon 554! I’ve been a regular client for the last year with Shawna (such a doll!). The atmosphere is lively and fun and all the stylists are very, very nice.
I’m originally from the Bay Area, CA, and have high expectations for salons. Salon 554 would fit right in with the caliber of a way pricier salon. Shawna takes the time to carefully style my very thick hair however I want it and always does an amazing job.
I have been very happy with every service I receive from Salon 554. My friends are consistently asking where and who does my hair and I always enthusiastically direct them to Salon 554 and Shawna. I’m a HUGE fan!

I went to this salon twice and had my highlights and hair cut by Rhonda who is a great stylist. I needed to get my hair done the last week of March and Rhonda wasn’t available because she only works on Friday. She recommended that I go to Sara the owner. I booked with her and went to the appt. She proceeded to do highlights on my hair and then one of her assistants came a put something on me after the wraps were taken off. I asked what this was as it was not done before and was told it was a toner and would be great. She then cut my hair without asking me what I wanted and when I commented on that she said well it had grown an inch so that was what she cut off. I went to pay my bill and was told that it was 192 which was 54 more than Rhonda charged. I asked why and was told that everything is ala cart and that I had highlights all over and toner and a cut and each one has a different price. Mind you I didn’t ask for these things and was not told I was going to be charged for them. Nor was I told before hand how much all of this was going to be or why she charges so much more. She said it was due to experience. She even made a comment about Rhonda should have told me about the price difference? They took 10 off of the bill as I was only supposed to have partial highlights. As far as I’m concerned this was very poor communications. Oh and by the way my hair looked better when Rhonda did it.

I found this salon on Unilocal – and so I feel an obligation to fellow Unilocalers to review this salon. My 1^st experience (cut & color) was a disaster. The singularly worst cut and color job I have ever received (and I am an older client, so I have been receiving these services for years). The stylist actually said she was some sort of trainee and was supposed to be supervised, which she wasn’t. I went back because the salon owner offered to make it right, but she charged additional $$$ to do so. Although the owner claims she listens to her clients, she changed my hair color – without okaying it with me – to a darker color that I was unhappy with, and the final style, which I walked out with, was absurd and unflattering. Everyone there is super personable and they push push push the expensive products. I would not return under any circumstances.

I had a massage with Ed last month that was one of the best I’ve ever had. He was extremely thorough, did a great job focusing on the problem areas I identified and even picked up on the problems in my legs that my physical therapist told me about. He really seems to know his stuff. I was sore (in the best way!) for days after, like I’d had a major workout! I went when he was having a special and the price was amazing. Definitely check him out.
Oh, and the place was nice – a spacious, clean, comfortable room. Ed uses body pillows and a heating pad on the table, which were really nice. My only complaint with the facility was that the room was a teensy bit cool, but I’m sure he would have fixed that if I’d said anything.

I went here once for a cut and color. Worst experience ever. The girl was completely incompetent. Her next appt showed, who happened to be her brother. She freaked out said she couldn’t finish my hair. I left with gooey product all over my wet head. Plus she still charged me $ 130!!! When I called and asked to speak with a mgr the receptionist said they all managed themselves and there was nothing they could do for me. I will NEVER give them my business again. Or recommend them to anyone.
I really give them 0 stars!
*** update. I was contacted by the owner via email. Unfortunately 3 years too late. I tried numerous times to contact the owner/​manger. I called 3 or 4 times the week after it happened. The owner at the time didnt care at all about what aweful service I had. Seems a bit odd that now someone cares. The person who did my hair may or may not rent a station there currently. But it’s still the same owner and my beef is with how terrible I was treated and the deplorable customer service I received from everyone there. Not just the hair stylist. It was the receptionist right on up to the owner. Plus when I was contacted a few weeks ago, all I was asked was the name of the stylist. There was no retribution offered. No «please come back and we will make it right on us». My 180 bucks is still gone and my hair was never fixed.
So my Unilocal reviews still stands. Take your money and your hair somewhere else.

I agree with the first reviewer, Amber R. This salon is classy, well designed, spacious, clean, and refreshing. Stylists/​receptionists are very friendly and greet customers right when they step in; they even offer guests a drink (water or soda). I was able to schedule an appointment the same day I called. Stacy was my stylist. She was very knowledgeable, seemed to have a good understanding of my hair type and gave me great hair advice (such as what kind of flat iron is best for my type of hair and why). She cut my hair exactly as I described to her and even dried, straightened, and trimmed it. All for only $ 35! Normally the salons I’ve gone to charge $ 45 just for wash and cut – no drying, trimming, & styling. I’m a happy gal with a fresh new cut! :) I will definitely being going back for my future haircuts and may even try a more risky cut next time, seeing as their stylists seem to really know what they’re doing.

I happened upon this salon because they carry a hard-​to-​find hair product I like. I also needed a new stylist. I asked for a recommendation depending on my style and hair type, and the receptionist paired me with Carli.
She spends a lot of time perfecting my cut and styling my hair, for only $ 40. I would expect to pay at least $ 50 for this level of service. I have not had experience with other stylists, but they all seem professional and up to speed on techniques. The salon itself is attractive and well-​designed, with plenty of open appointments to fit with your schedule.
