Salem Apothecary is an independent, locally owned and operated health and wellness center that specializes in compounding and customization services. We have a 30-​plus year presence in the community and are the only compounding pharmacy within a 35-​mile radius. In addition to our pharmacy and compounding lab, we also carry home durable medical equipment. Our unique business has an old-​fashioned soda fountain, offering daily lunch specials and a gift section where you can find a variety of items unique to this area.

History

Established in 1985.

There has been a pharmacy at #3 Public Square for more than 130 years. In 1889, William Rudder purchase the drug store and opened Rudder’s Drugs at #3 Lyon Block. The Rudder family practiced pharmacy here for over sixty years. William H. and his sister Dess continued the business after their father died. Dess was one of the first women to graduate from Purdue University School of Pharmacy and became the first woman to be a licensed pharmacist in the State of Indiana. Dess and her brother practiced pharmacy at #3 Lyon Block till 1949 when William H passed away.

The store was sold to Max Apple; a young entrepreneur from Paoli and Apple’s Drugs came into being in 1949. Max’s son James joined him in practice in 1965. It was Max who expanded the store in 1967 for #3 Lyon Block to include #4 Lyon Block and made the store the size it is today.

The name was changed to Salem Apothecary in 1985 when purchased by current owners, Phillip and Rebecca Marshall. Rebecca is the store’s pharmacist.

Business Owner

Rebecca graduated from Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1974 and began practicing pharmacy in southern Indiana. She is the Chief Pharmacist and owner of the Salem Apothecary since 1985. Her pharmaceutical care specialties include Diabetes Patient Care Certificate Program from Purdue University 1998, Asthma Pharmacotherapy Certificate Program from Purdue University 1998, Smoking Cessation Therapy Specialist NCPA 1999, Pharmaceutical Compounding Centers of America Member since 1999, and Certified in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy 2000.
