Established in 1994.

Founded in 1994, by Alex Beamer, LifeSource is Salem’s independant, locally-​owned, natural grocery store. We are celebrating 20 years of natural food goodness! We support the community, buying local foods from small family farms. We sell grass-​fed meats.

We opened our doors at LifeSource Natural Foods just before Thanksgiving, 1994, fulfilling my vision of bringing a top quality natural foods store to Salem. Our goal is to provide a clean, organized, abundantly stocked store with the finest natural and organic foods & friendly knowledgeable staff. We are committed to encouraging a healthy lifestyle & taking care of the Earth. My vision includes treating everyone involved very well, respecting our customers & staff and contributing to this community.

We began as a vegetarian store providing a full line of natural & organic foods, organic produce, a deli, natural supplements & body care. Then, as now, we had a Community Room, offering a variety of classes including cooking, nutrition & yoga.

Our vision & effort took root in this community and we have evolved over the years into a larger & busier operation. We began with 4600 sf & 8 employees. Now we are 10,700 sf & 80 employees. Because of you, we are still here. Thank You!

I love Life source. But, saying that their buffet has taken a turn for the worse. Too many starches and Mexican type cheesy foods. Mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes. Wonder what happened? It used to be so good.

This store smells terrific, but the prices are outrageous. The staff are helpful, but in retrospect talked me into several expensive supplements I didn’t need. I only go here if I can’t find what I need in other stores or online.

What a great selection this store has! Its wonderful! Now I only wish their prices weren’t so darn high. But I’m definitely willing to pay prices like that for the quality that they deliver.
Their customer serivce is always fantastic. Incredibly friendly and helpful staff willing to take the time with you to find your exact item.
They sell Marsee Foods baked goods. Über yummy bagels and breads, for somewhat reasonably priced.
Their bulk selection is great also, so many organic, and raw items available for bulk purchase
Parking lot is a bit of a doozie, VERY cramped and small spaces to maneuver.

Fabulous customer service. Plenty of knowledgeable staff. Good selection of items I can’t find anywhere else. (except online and I prefer to support local). Prices aren’t any higher than Whole Foods or other quality stores. I love the deli. African Peanut soup is my favorite!

Great store with very knowledgeable employees and excellent service. The selection is great except it is so very pricey. I’ve dropped $ 500 in five minutes many times without batting an eye.
I would recommend it as a necessary trip for a health need, however.

Very nice store. Good selection but the prices are a tad higher than some of its newer competitors. My main issue is the stupid parking lot. It’s absolutely terrible. Just because of the parking lot we will visit Trader Joe’s and Natural Grocers first before going here to see if they have what we need.

A bit spendy, but you get what you pay for (just seemed like everything was full price). Deli had an awesome selection of quick lunches and snacks that you can feel good about feeding your family. We stopped on our way through town heading to the dunes. It was nice to stock the camper with some real food. I wish we had a market like this up in Rochester!

Okay — time for an update and a slightly higher review.
My biggest problem with this market is that they make no bones about charging full retail (or even slightly more) for every single thing they sell. That’s still true.
But I am starting to appreciate that there are a few brands and items they offer that you just can’t find elsewhere.
Short of driving all the way to Portland+Surrounds, this is the only place I know to get real, fresh-​squeezed grapefruit juice. I know that doesn’t sound like a big deal, but if you really love it (and I do) it’s enough to drive a few blocks out of the way to find. They also offer a lot of organically raised meats that I can’t find in other places — and an excellent deli-​lunch counter. I also appreciate the wide selection of nut-​butters — another of those things that doesn’t sound particularly important unless vanilla-​espresso-​almond butter or coconut-​peanut butter is one of your favorites (!)

So – price aside, this is a good market. They seem to have stopped carrying Pederson’s sausages — which would guarantee a stop here every time we’re in Salem — but you can’t have everything. There are some close (if not perfect) substitutes –

Finally, someone at Lifesource is reading Unilocal reviews. Hey, businesses? Want to know how to get five stars? Read and respond to reviews.
I received a message from someone at Lifesource regarding my poor pizza experience (see original review and the end of this). The person gave an explanation as to why the crust was not what I was expecting (was probably spelt or gluten free), gave an apology, offered a gift card, and explained their policy regarding products I am unhappy with.
That’s all I want from businesses who want my money. Just apologize! I’m over it already, even without the apology, but it’s nice that they offered one right away.
I won’t be taking them up on the gift card, as that’s totally unnecessary, but I appreciate the offer.

WORST PIZZA EVER
I mean, god awful. Soft, crumbly crust. Funky flavor. $ 3.50 each.
I could not pick up a slice, as it was so soft and limp it fell apart. I cannot believe that there are enough people on earth to warrant daily pizza offerings by Lifesource.
This pizza gives health food a bad name.

I love Life Source, but my bank account does not. I try to only buy sale items, which helps a lot, but the cost of groceries does add up pretty quickly.
Things I love: Lorain’s golden eggs, chocolate chip walnut cookies, hot bar chicken, Marsee demi baguettes, Mulay sausages, Lonely Lane pork, and Blue Monkey Teft Love bread. Everything else I have to be really cost conscious about, which is sad because I would love to shop there more if I could. Most other things Life Source carries can be purchased at other grocery stores in town, but Life Source has pretty decent sales from time to time if you’re patient, their food fairs are great for trying out new products, and their staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Life Source is my «go to» grocery store. I am pretty much able to get what i need. I can trust that the food is good quality, organic, non gmo. and that is nice to not have to worry.
The salad and hot food bar are very good. Sunday is my favorite and their biscuits and gravy are divine!
Every one who works there is knowledgeable and helpful and friendly.

The price is the only choking point. i feel they are more expensive because they are a small operation and can’t order in high bulk like other chains. not sure but it’s what i tell myself.

Let me start this off by saying I do like this store, but I don’t love it. I like the fact that we have a store like this in Salem I just wish it wasn’t the only one in town, then maybe their prices might be a little lower if there were some competition. I love the selection they have of gluten-​free products. I only buy the products that I can’t find anywhere else there because generally I can find them cheaper somewhere else. I’m not a cheap person usually by nature, but I am a full-​time college student with a gluten allergy and find it hard to be able to afford the foods I can eat.
I do appreciate the employees at this store. They generally know what they are talking about and if they don’t they try to find someone to help you. I will continue to shop here when I can afford it.
