Once upon a time, there was a girl who moved from Long Island to Roanoke. She was sad because she missed good deli sandwiches. Then, she found Joe’s Deli and lived happily ever after.

Best place in the area to get sandwiches… tons of meat! If you want roast beef or baklava you need to order early. I love that they’re open later on Thursdays now but really wish for Saturday’s!

Updated Review Jan 2016 — Joe’s is still the best deli in Salem, but they do not have the best Italian type sub in the Roanoke Valley, even though they use super fresh ingredients and really pile on the meats — and I mean pile it on. There are several shops in the Roanoke Valley that have better tasting subs — better flavors and better textures — even though these other places give you way less meat volume than Joe offers. A very few examples in the SW area: the Bomber served by the Village Grill on Memorial Ave and the B D Special at Brambleton Deli and the Italian sub from Our Daily Bread on Brambleton are all flavor and texture extravaganzas.

Great food and some of the best customer service I’ve ever had. Met the owner tonight really great guy who works hard and makes sure you had a great experience and good food. Chicken salad was some of the best I’ve had from a deli. Seriously, if you’re debating about eating here, which you are that’s why you’re reading this, take the chance, stop waiting around and just go to Joes!

This is the best place to eat at in Salem! High quality food all around freshly made every morning! Between the salads and subs I’ve become a 10 yr veteran customer and consumer of this place!
After reading the reviews I’d say these people are right but this place gives you options just gotta tell them what you like. Joe is an awesome person willing to make sure everyone is happy with their order.
It might be toasted it might sometimes even be lukewarm but hey it all compensates to make a great sub! No one around can beat what Joe’s deli offers in quality and quantity!

We weren’t that impressed. It wasn’t bad, just not fantastic like other reviews were saying. All turkey is smoked turkey and the subs are toasted, but there’s so much meat it’s still cold in the middle for a lukewarm bite. They were also out of baklava. Oh well!

I had the reuben with corned beef. It was really really fantastic. My husband had the Italian and said that there was too much ham. So, 4 starts, but I will be back to try the pastrami.

My girlfriend and I were on an extensive road trip and saw Roanoke was a perfect midpoint. We almost went to another lunch spot, but we are glad we went to Joe’s.
The subs were loaded on a toasted hoagie roll. There was a perfect amount of bread on my turkey, ham, lettuce, tomato, and provolone cheese sub. Additionally, the ham and turkey were quite flavorful.
My girlfriend ordered a turkey, lettuce, red onion, and provolone sub that was equally delicious. The subs did not need any dressing, oil, or vinegar because the meats were so moist.
We ordered a 12″ sub for a measly 8.50ish each. Well worth the cost. We recommend this lunch spot for any local or traveller (a minimal detour off I-​81).

We found this place through Unilocal while driving up to DC… wow, what a surprise. In general I am lukewarm on Subs, but I had quite possibly the best sub I have ever had at Joe
We got the turkey sub with bacon. First of all, it was actually a foot long sub (unlike Subway) and was loaded with turkey. The ingredients, including the sub roll, were phenomenal.
Unfortunately, if you don’t live in Salem, VA, it is not easy to find. We drove by it once before we even found it. (we were actively looking, too.)
If you are looking for something besides gas station food, driving on I-​81, I would suggest stopping off here for a good sub.
For Subs, this is a 5 star place.
