Back in 2005, while I was serving as the Exalted Ruler of the McMinnville Elks Lodge, I was tasked to check with all the Elks lodges in the North Central District (at that time eight), and see who did their audits and what they paid. I found out that Silverton Lodge used Brenner CPAs, due to one of their members, Jerry Alljets, being a CPA at this firm. Upon interviewing Jerry, he shared with me that he was retiring, but had a great replacement — Mr. Josh Purington. Also, Brenner CPAs was the least expensive of all the CPA firms I checked. Josh has successfully done our audits for 10 years now — we have never been audited by the Grand Lodge and have successfully passed an IRS review. In addition to the Elks, we have also used Brenner CPAs by several veterans service organizations. Thanks to Josh’s great knowledge of non-​profits, and the helpful staff at Brenner CPAs, we have always received great value and return for our non-​profit dollars. Recently a veterans service organization looked at a number of potential vendors regarding financial reviews, and Brenner CPAs was the lowest and best value for the dollar. Now, other members of these organizations are also believers in Brenner CPAs. After several years of amicable service under a multi-​year retainer letter, Brenner & Co. surprised me with a doubling of my fees for 2013 with no additional work (less actually, by their time sheets). Needless to say we decided to part ways. Particularly galling however that they refuse to release my work papers in the standard accounting file format and gave me PDFs instead saying «your next accountant can do what we had to do and manually input everything in their software.» I have no time for that type of unethical (in my opinion) behavior and I have filed a complaint with the Oregon Board of Accountancy.
