History
Established in 1923.
Since its beginning, Shorecrest has been a place of learning that consistently strives to meet the needs of the students and their families. Shorecrest opened in September 1923, between 12 and 13 Ave NE, just east of Beach Drive. The school grounds could be considered somewhat exotic, as they met Tampa Bay on their eastern edge and were shaded by expansive banyan trees. At that time, St. Petersburg was a town of approximately 600 residents, but as the Florida land boom of the ‘20s began, tourists and investors arrived in increasing numbers during the winter months.
The number of students increased substantially when «snow birds» wanted a school that would enable their children to continue their studies for the time they were in the area. During baseball spring training, the children of players for the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals were Shorecrest students. In 1967 Shorecrest moved to its current location. In the early ‘70s, Shorecrest expanded to include a high school.
