History

Established in 1960.

Haines Road Animal Hospital was established in 1960 as a two veterinarian clinic operated by its founder, Dr. Joe S. Larmon. In 1997, Dr. Javier Vicente bought the clinic after practicing here for five years. As a young veterinarian, Dr. Vicente had a deep love for animals and a vision of a veterinary hospital that treats pets with the same level of medical care and attention given to human patients. It was his insight and dedication to veterinary medicine that has brought Haines Road Animal Hospital to where it is today — a six veterinarian, full-​service facility offering the most progressive and up-​to-​date treatment for pets throughout St. Petersburg and surrounding communities.

Business Owner

Dr. Javier Vicente graduated from Auburn University in Alabama in 1992, the same year he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, to begin an internship at Haines Road Animal Hospital. Shortly thereafter, he started practicing as a professional veterinarian at the clinic. In 1997, he became sole owner of the practice. Dr. Vicente is married and has two children, a dachshund mix and a dachshund, three cats, and a bird.

I surrendered my dog on November 12, 2015, in the middle of my diagnosed major depression. My dog was having anxiety issues which started with a low-​battery signal from a smoke detector when we weren’t home. On the day of the surrender, the vet never offered my husband or me the options of alternative medication for the dog’s anxiety nor training, regardless of what he told the hospital owner. The vet deceived us by telling us that the dog was going to a «terrier rescue» where I knew there might be a chance of getting him back because I have contacts in the rescue business. Instead we found out later that they gave the dog to a friend of an employee! I tried in every way possible to get my dog back. Every time I wrote to the vet or the owner of the animal hospital, I would have to follow up because they didn’t respond. My lawyer said that while the vet was not legally obligated to offer the alternative medication and training at that last meeting, he was probably morally obligated to do so. Our vet back home would have done everything to help us work through this.

I am waiting outside this office Emma, our golden retriever is being put down She has cancer and it is time. This is her vet I have given a poor review because I am very disappointed. We called this morning to set time. We called on the way. We waited in parking lot to gain entrance after we arrived. Emma can not walk which we had stated. We had to drive to another entrance and I had to carry Emma by myself. Lacks compassion Shame on you.

We moved to the area about a year ago and needed to find a new vet. I picked this place because it was close to my house and they were available for an appt. I have to say that I was initially skeptical. For no other reason than they are strangers dealing with my family pets and I’m skeptical!
I am so glad I came here. Dr. Rius really pays attention while he’s examining my cats. He even commented that he could tell one of them was a «free spirit» and it’s so true. When I brought one of my cats back in for a booster, Dr. Rius put his forehead to my cat’s forehead for a quick hello. My cats seem to like him (even though he sticks them with needles).
Just wanted to let everyone know that I would recommend this place. They are very thorough and I feel they have a genuine concern for animals.
A few days after my pets appointments, they always call to follow up and make sure everything is going okay. :)

We were recommended this place by a few friends when we got our puppy three years ago. It is cheaper than the other place we went to first. They don’t push any unnecessary shots on you, the other place did. The doctors and nurses are super nice and knowledgeable. The only down is that there are receptionists who are less than nice. Not all of them, but there’s a couple that I thought were pretty rude before.

Nice location and really friendly staff. I had been going to Banfield before and this is a big upgrade. My Banfield plan had a «discount» on Trifexis for my dog which ended up being $ 120 for a 6-​month supply. Haines Road Animal Hospital only charge me $ 98 for the same 6-​month supply! They are also honest; when I asked about a teeth cleaning for my dog they said she didn’t need it.

i agree with those that said,” its all about money.” they will try and ached. your dog to come in every 3 – 4 months for shots. when i asked to get them all at one time, they said it would not be healthy for dog to get overlapping meds just to try and get them all at once.
so i just held her until all were due.
now they give annual bordetella dose to cover 365 days, only dose they sell. but they tell my doggy daycare it should be given every 6 mo. now my daycare wants her to have it every 6 mo. so i ask vet about double dosing, they said its ok with this drug to give twice as much as needed. really!!!
Pigs get fat… hogs get slaughtered. they are being very hoggish. customers will catch on and put a stop to it or go somewhere else.
thats me… taking my business elsewhere.

The front staff is HORRIBLE!
5 older women all looking Down when u walk in the door! NO SENSE of customer Service — NO sense that you MATTER.
Rather these older women who have run this place for years project the sense that you ANNOY them for making them look up. Just abandon the fact someone will actually speak to you. I Stood there for over 7 minutes… And no one welcomed me or looked at me!
This staff needs serious training
Or… Removal of the deadwood!!!

As the owner of 4 German Shepherd Dogs a decent Vet is pretty important. Luckily, Haines Road Animal Hospital fills the bill. Their kennel services are terrific and I am confident that my kids are getting the best possible care while I’m away. Dr. Aimee and Dr. Vicente are true animal lovers and their care and compassion are exactly what we were looking for in a Vet. I noticed that one reviewer commented that their prices were high. Well, that hasn’t been my experience. That said, I think it’s important for the owner to ask questions about services and costs before they render them. I remember one instance where I had to have 15 of my dogs teeth pulled and asked them to stay within a certain budget and they were able to do it. That was a couple years ago and my old girl is still chugging along at 13! I’ve been to other Vets in the area that I didn’t care for and felt ripped off at, but Haines Road gets my, and my canine kids, endorsement!

First of all I never write reviews. I went to this hospital twice. once with my older cat for shots. I feel they are over priced. The second time I brought in 2 stray kittens one of which Had a severed paw missing all but one of its toes and it was infected, The vet I worked with instantly said that leg has got to go, its got to come off and pointed we can cut it off here at the knee, or here above the knee. I was shocked she would go to such extremes and not try something else first. I persuaded her to try some antibiotics first, within under three weeks the cats foot was healed and she walks around today like nothing ever happened. I just feel like she either wanted the expensive surgery or she just wanted to do the surgery and did not have the best interests of my pets in mind. also I asked the sex of the kittens and she said both were males, turns out both were females, seems like something a vet should know, needless to say I am not going back.

With 2 cats and 2 dogs, having a good veterinary clinic is critical for us. Unfortunately, it took us a few years of being down here in St. Pete to finally find one we liked. The staff at Haines Road Animal Hospital are professional and cheerful. I love the way they have a «greeter» welcome you once you arrive and help get you settled right away. My husband and I have gone there for about a year now and we’ve never had to wait long, the veterinarians and technicians are always helpful and pleasant, and, while they guide us with our pets’ health, they don’t push extra products or services on us. (These are factors that really put us off about the other places we tried.) We never would have known about this clinic had our neighbor not recommended it, and I’m so glad he did.

I am relatively new in the area and have been to two other vets in the area: the first was fine but we didn’t love, and the second talked right over my head and didn’t listen to me and left me frustrated. Third time is a charm! I really look for vets who are AHAA certified-​which Haines Road is. Haines Road is bright and clean and welcoming and very thorough. They aim to work with you and be a partner in your pet’s care. They don’t push unnecessary products or tests or procedures at you-​just explain and let you make the decision. I am so happy to have found Haines Road Animal Hospital!
I have seen a total of 4 veterinarians over the past 2 years at Haines Road and will see nobody other than Dr. Buckner. Dr. Buckner has always been professional and knowledgeable and treats my dogs with great care and kindness.
I have received dismissive comments from one other vet and had X-​Rays done by one which I never authorized… NOT cool.
