The O’Shaughnessy holds a unique spot in the cultural landscape of the Twin Cities. In addition to regularly hosting popular concerts (including appearances by kd lang, Elvis Costello, Indigo Girls, Brandie Carlile, and more) and speakers, The O’Shaughnessy is a home for Twin Cities Dance. Local companies such as TU Dance, Ballet Minnesota, CAAM Chinese Dance, and more make regular appearances at The O’Shaughnessy.

In addition, The O’Shaughnessy is the home of Women of Substance. The Women of Substance series was founded in 1996 to encourage all women to find their voice and place on life’s stage. The series, which hosts local, national and international artists, continually reminds audience members of both genders the importance of living lives of substance. With over 22,000 patrons annually, the series continues to grow with enthusiastic audiences and broad media appeal.

History

Established in 1970.

The O’Shaughnessy has been a unique spot in the cultural landscape of the Twin Cities. During the first 15 years of operation the hall was filled with classical, orchestral, and modern music. After the construction of the Ordway Music Theatre in St. Paul, and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, The O’Shaughnessy established itself as a venue for regional and local dance community organizations such as CAAM Chinese Dance, The James Sewell Ballet, TU Dance, and countless others.

The list of performers who have appeared at The O’Shaughnessy includes kd lang, Elvis Costello, and Brandie Carlile. Famous speakers have included Dr. Maya Angelou and Madeleine Albright. Comedians Jay Leno and Steve Martin have performed, as well as Broadway stars like Lily Tomlin.

The O’Shaughnessy is supported, in part, by the «Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment» & the Minnesota State Arts Board, Wells Fargo, Arts Midwest, The Boss Foundation, NEFA and VSA Arts.

This is a decent auditorium with comfortable seats and relatively close parking (the lot would certainly have felt closer if it wasn’t below zero out). Sound was good. One weird thing is that there isn’t a center aisle… so it’s one side or the other with quite a lot of seats in between. This was awkward, especially for latecomers and bathroom-breakers. But, overall a pleasant experience.

It’s a nice little auditorium. I have only been there once so it may be hard to paint an accurate description, but I’ll try. We went to see the Nutcracker and honestly had I gotten there on time I would have had no problem finding parking. it was easy to locate the place and once I found parking the event parking area, it was a breeze. The staff were friendly and the acoustics were not bad. I thought the seats were comfortable and could see the whole stage without any problems.
I would definitely go there again for another performance.

Dropping a star because of the inordinate amount of time it takes to, first, wait in line for the ticket window, and then for the person behind the window to actually sell a ticket.
I wanted a single ticket to see last night’s screening of the documentary, «Miss Representation». I arrived probably 15 – 20 minutes prior to show time and there seemed to be a lot of people waiting in two lines to get tickets. Once at the counter, I requested one ticket, and slid my bill under the window. The woman was searching/viewing a computer screen showing the seating. Then she keyed in the dollar amount of the bill I offered and then she keyed in the dollar amount of the change to be given in return, and then she gave me a ticket and my change. Seems like a lot of extra, unnecessary steps to simply sell a ticket for cash. However, I realize that this may be their way to minimize employee temptation. Maybe they’ll find a better way to sell tickets for cash.
The program was to begin at 7pm; however, it did not start until nearly 7:15 and still, many people were streaming in (my guess is that it took quite a while for these people to get their tickets, too) as the program commenced.

I went to see the Metropolitan Ballet perform at the O’Shaughnessy last weekend. The Ballet was FABULOUS! Great performance and compliation of famous ballets.
The O’Shaughnessy on the other hand is an older building that isn’t quite kept up to date. The restrooms are very small and not well cared for. I do give St Cate’s credit for the age of the building and the amount of events hosted on their premieses.
Would I see the Metropolitan Ballet again — definitely.
Would I choose to go to the O’Shaughnessy — probably not.
