History

Established in 1995.

The Great Metropolitan Backrub opened its virtual doors in Calhoun Square on November 16, 1995. A modest proposal, we began by offering seated massage, shiatsu, polarity and twi na before massage was even a thought in Minneapolis. People walked up to our «kiosk» (a chair, a rug and a chalk board — literally) and found out what massage was all about.

Over the years we moved from the kiosk to an in-line store, and then to the Rainbow Building at the intersection of Lake and Hennepin in 2002. That same year we opened our second location in Highland Park, St. Paul.

In 2005, the Uptown location was forced to move to a much more remote location at 38th and Grand Ave. S. While The new Kingfield Backrub enjoyed almost 3 years of friendly faces, the 2009 recession hit us hard and we felt no choice but to close the location after almost 15 years in South Minneapolis.

Still open in Highland, The Great Metropolitan Backrub continues to be the only walk-in massage store in the Twin Cities.
