Highland Family Eye Care is the vision of Dr. Brian J. Snyder, a board certified optometrist. It was created out of his desire to serve his community and to provide the best for his patients. That means you can count on Dr. Snyder for your comprehensive eye exam, contact lens fitting, eye glasses, medical eye care and refractive surgery co management. We are recognized providers for many major insurers, including VSP.

Highland Family Eye Care is located in the Highland Park neighborhood, on the southwest corner of Pinehurst and Cleveland Avenues, across the street from the historic Highland movie theater. The clinic has convenient and ample parking in the lot behind the building. We have evening appointments available as well as the first and third Saturdays of the month. Business Owner

Dr. Brian J. Snyder has been practicing full scope optometry in the twin cities since graduating cum laude from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2002. After graduation, Dr. Snyder completed a year of advanced training in ocular disease and refractive surgery co management with the Minnesota Eye Consultants. Other professional distinctions include fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry and membership in the Minnesota Optometric Association, where he is chair of the legislative committee, whose purpose is to educate members of congress on eye care issues. In 2011, Dr. Snyder became one of the first optometrists in the nation to be named a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. On a personal note, he loves living and working in St. Paul’s Highland neighborhood with his wife and three sons. In his spare time he volunteers with the cub scouts and boy scouts, enjoys cooking, and spending time on Minnesota’s north shore.

I am a new patient of Dr. Snyder. I picked his clinic due to distance from our home and the great reviews. First impression upon walking in, was, WOW, the clinic is so beautiful, clean, organized and very spacious. The front desk welcomed me graciously as well. Dr. Snyder is great in explaining things and in making me comfortable (I don’t like things close to my face). He figured out what was wrong so off to choosing a frame I go.
Tammy, helped me with picking the frame and she has a very keen eye on what works for my face and my nose bridge (or the lack of it). ;) She didn’t try to sell me designer frames even though what I liked turned out to be one. :)
Very highly recommended.

I have not had an eye exam in over 5 years but the old age is setting in. The exam was organized, efficient and I thought Dr. Snyder took a very reasonable approach to a treatment plan when he easily could have hard sold me on prescriptions. The people were very friendly and the selection of frames was very good. This will be my go to place, very convenient for anyone living in Highland, Mac/​Groveland or Longfellow.

I found Highland Family Eye Clinic here and went there mainly because of the high reviews and location. I was early for my appointment so I had a little longer than normal wait, no big deal.
My exam was awesome… Dr Snyder did a full exam spending the time and some patience in making me feel comfortable and at ease for my first complete exam in many years. I was blown away…
After the exam is where I kinda was left to be on my own. Never needing glasses, I didn’t understand the process. No one really helped after I was released to browse what they had. Being on limited income at this time cause of a disability, I was overwhelmed by the prices and felt a little self conscious and got a sense I didn’t quite fit into the cliental or the type of customers that they wish to service.
I think that they use tech very well, my appointment showed up in my passport on my iPhone and scheduling was easy online with email notifications.
I had to ask over 3 times and wait for more than a month for my prescription before it was actually mailed to me. I did get my glasses from another place where my insurance covered them and because of the great examination by Dr Snyder, they’re perfect.

I had a great experience! The staff members are very friendly and personable. I generally only wear my glasses around the house, so I was looking to get something that suited me at the lowest price possible. They totally understood and worked with me. They even went out of their way to track down my prescription from my previous eye doctor. My new glasses are so cute; I might even start wearing them in public!

After living in Minnesota for two and a half years, I couldn’t go much longer without having an eye exam. Coming up empty for personal recommendations, I turned to Unilocal,and Unilocal did not lead me astray (as always).
The Highland Family Eye Care clinic is convenient, right near Cleveland and Ford Parkway. They have a customer parking lot that is really big behind the building, so no need for street parking woes. The staff was super friendly from my very first phone call. Upon arrival, I was asked to fill out the standard forms. The woman at the desk kindly asked, «Do you need your glasses to fill out the forms?» For some reason, that struck me as really funny, but I bet it is an issue that comes up a lot. I also really appreciated that they asked for my medical insurance as well as my vision insurance — trying to get me the most that they could under my coverage to limit out of pocket costs.
As for the exam, I thought it was very thorough and professional. I really liked Dr. Snyder. He had a good easy manner and gave really clear instructions (important in an eye exam!). He also took the time to explain the terms he was using. This was something he did naturally as part of the conversation without any prompting from me. It was the total opposite of the doctors who speak in medical jargon that no one can understand. I also really appreciated his considerate nature. Eye exams are always hard for me because at some point, all of the drops, bright lights and constant things coming into very close proximity with my eyes make them get really watery and sensitive. At one point, I just needed to take 30 more seconds to calm myself down before the next part of the exam, and Dr. Snyder was super patient and understanding. I also liked that he enjoyed telling me about my eyes. I’m a naturally curious person, so I tend to ask a lot of questions just because. He answered all of them and seemed to really like teaching a patient about eye anatomy and eye health. Unlike a lot of healthcare professionals, I felt like he was very focused on his time with me and not rushing me out the door to keep on schedule.
As far as the glasses go, the selection of frames is not huge but is definitely good. It is true that a lot of the frames are on the pricier side — pretty much every set I was considering came with a $ 275 price tag on the frames. But since I have been wearing glasses since fourth grade and view my eyewear as a really big and worthwhile investment, this was OK. I have every confidence that my glasses are going to be of excellent quality and make me look like a fashion superstar. OK, maybe not the last one. But definitely the first. :-) I also really appreciated the help of the employees, who listened very carefully to what I said about my preferences and helped me zero in on the perfect pair.

I came here solely based on the positive Unilocal reviews and it wasn’t too terribly far from home.
Called to verify they took my insurance. Very friendly. Called back and scheduled an appt, someone different and also very friendly.
Came in. Easy to find, free parking. Nice office. They gave me some forms to fill out as I was a new patient. This is my biggest gripe. It’s an eye doctor, yet the forms are photo copied with relatively small text and not the brightest lighting. I mean, come on… I can’t see anything up close. That’s why I’m here! That was a little frustrating.
They took me in as soon as I was done blindly filling in my form. The Doc was great, especially after I explained my aversion to all things eyes. They gross me out. Exam went well and he did a great job explaining what he was doing and why he was doing it.
Back up front, they did a great job of helping me select some frames and explaining my cost per my ins coverage. I wish they had a few other designers of frame but I did find several reasonably priced options that I liked.
All in all, definitely good stuff and would recommend.

Knowing there are a million eye doctors, I found Dr Snyder with a good Unilocal rating and gave him a try, and I am so happy I did! Dr Snyder is great and so are Tammy and Ed in the office. I am a first time contact wearer and struggled through 2 months of trying to make them work. They were all so patient with me it was amazing. They are all so friendly and welcoming. I drive from Minneapolis to go here and don’t regret it at all.
Even though I am wearing contacts they do have a great selection of glasses.

My husband and I both got our exams and contacts/​glasses here. They have a nice selection of glasses but they are mostly on the high-​end designer (expensive!) side of life. I feel we got a good exam and good products. Their hours a a little limited so there have been times I have tried to stop by to get a refill on my disposable lens and they just weren’t open or had just closed. Yes you can always call ahead but you have to pick them up sometime. I guess they were professional and friendly but I didn’t get the red carpet treatment some of the other reviewers got.

I was referred here after a bad experience with another Optometrist (shall remain nameless but they had 2 stars on Unilocal.WHEN WILL I LEARN?).
They are a shining example of what every service organization should be like regardless of the profession. When I first walked in, the receptionist came from behind the counter and offered to take my coat. In 20+ years of going to a vision specialist (or skin, or dentist, or anyone) that has happened… well it was the first time. And the service I received continued to exceed expectations throughout.
After the first visit and contact lens fitting I returned 2 weeks later for a post-​evaluation. I was very happy but Dr. Snyder felt he could improve my vision more and tweaked the perscription. Result: I’m beyond very happy.
It’s not just the fitting, it’s the atmosphere: Professional, laid back and fun. Great service. Great people. Great experience.

Dr. Snyder and Tammy are both great. Dr. Snyder explains what he is doing and is helpful when making decisions, giving options and listening to your opinions. Tammy helped me pick out a new pair of glasses and was honest when telling me how they looked and how durable they are. They were also quick in scheduling follow up appointments and in delivering glasses. Would definitely recommend.

Dr Snyder is the best! I first visited him because of an eye infection. After two weeks on the road, I was still having problems and feeling panicky about my vision problems. I called to make an appointment, but the only day I could come in was Friday — Dr Snyder had the day off. HE OFFERED TO COME IN JUST TO SEE ME! I mean, what doctor does that?! He gave me a new prescription for eye drops, and I immediately saw improvement. It’s great to be on the road to recovery; it is also amazing to have a doctor who cares that much about his clients. And I am now a client for life.

I had an appointment with Dr. Snyder this morning, and it was the most fun I have ever had at an eye appointment. Both Dr. Snyder, and Ed, the guy up front, were very friendly and helpful. Ed was a great fashion advisor and he helped me pick out super cute frames.
His clinic is super cute, and they have a great selection of frames, including many selections that won’t break the bank. Neither Ed or Dr. Snyder tried to upsell me on anything, or get me to buy stuff that was out of my price range.
It also helps that Dr. Snyder looks a little like Kevin Spacey, and the idea of getting an eye exam from Kevin Spacey was enough to keep me giggling for most of the exam.
I hope to frequent this clinic for a long time.

Dr Snyder is a wonderful eye doctor. I have been going to him for years and was very happy when he had opened up his own shop. He is very patient, understanding and has a great sense of humor.
His clinic is different from what I have seen in the past as it is modern, and up to date with technology rather than being stuck in the past. His office has a very modern /​retro look to it and has a great selection of glasses. He is located in St. Paul and I strongly recommend that everyone check his clinic out!

Fantastic location and great space! Love that it doesn’t feel like a stuffy doctor’s office. Dr. Snyder is very nice and knowledgeable. Was back home in St. Paul for the weekend and had to get my eyes checked as it has been… years. Glad I picked Highland Family Eye Care!
