Deducting a theoretical Half Star since I can’t rely on Details Style Lab for bikini waxing anymore. First Angela left so I went elsewhere for my waxing needs. Then Details hired another waxer so I came back. And then today I called to make an appointment and they told me they are no longer offering bikini waxes.
I am not actually deducting a Star since Details is a nice salon, the people there have always been friendly, and I got some awesome socks in their boutique for Xmas presents. But I guess I’ll have to skip Details unless I need something done with the hair on my head.

I get my hair cut about twice a year, so I try to find a good place with a solid reputation to go to because I’m going to be stuck with this look for a while. Details delivered. I made a reservation to get my hair cut and eyebrows waxed without any problems, and they called me a couple days in advance to confirm my appointment. The salon actually has a storefront that sells cute socks, scarves, knick-​knacks, that sort of thing. When I checked in, the receptionist took my coat and offered me a drink. I had barely sat down to wait when Nicole came out and took me to their back room for a my wax. She did a great job: neat, symmetric, and not too thin. Then she took me back out to do my hair. She first sat me down at her station for a quick neck massage, and then we headed over to the shampoo station. After she’d cut my hair and given me some layers, Nicole then proceeded to curl my hair and style it. It looked so awesome afterwards that I was sad I didn’t have anything fancy planned for the rest of the day! Of course the most important measure of a haircut for me is if it still looks good the next day after all the styling has been washed away… and it does! Five stars: D

I just moved to St Paul a month ago, and stumbled across Details on one of my exploratory walks. The move seemed to last forever, throw in a new puppy, and I was a tad stressed (as was my skin!)
I was able to set up a spa facial appointment for just a few days later, and my aesthetician was Stephanie. She made me comfortable and did an amazing job. Unlike most times when I get a massage or facial, I actually wanted to have a conversation! We ended up with a ton of things in common and meanwhile, massaged my shoulders a bit longer since we had some extra time.
All in all, amazing experience. And I’ve already set up my next appointment :)

I am new to the area and had a formal event in St. Paul. Not yet having my own stylist, I called around and made an appt for an updo. There was a scheduling conflict with the girl I originally made the appt with and they worked with me to get me in with another stylist, who was more expensive but I was honored the original price. I was so happy they put me with Shannon. She was great and did her thing and my updo was fantastic. I decided I will make the drive and keep her as my stylist for future hair cuts. She even recommended a few other places to check out while there including a fantastic brunch place. Would highly recommend her to others.

Both an out of town friend and my husband stopped in to this place within the last few days and had what they called «uncomfortable» experiences with stylist Greg. My female friend just needed to get her bangs trimmed and said that she may as well have trimmed them herself. My husband left his appointment with Greg this evening and immediately texted me that he «just had the worst hair cut experience». Maybe Greg needs to find another career?

Moving out of state means I have to find a new job, a new gym, a new hair stylist, a new nail salon, and a new waxing place. I can only check one thing off that list and that is waxing. I really only had two criteria in mind when I did my search for a new salon: a place with decent reviews and that I could get to easily on the bus. Details Style Lab was a match on both counts so I called and made an appointment. On the day of, I received a call four hours before my appointment and was told that the aesthetician had called out sick and I needed to reschedule. I was a little irritated since I didn’t want to feel like Sasquatch for even one more day but I got an appointment for the next day so it wasn’t that bad.
Details is in the bottom floor of an office building and you enter through the lobby of the building, not directly into the salon. The front of the salon is a boutique, which I found a bit odd (Tabatha Takes Over would NOT approve). The salon is very nice and I passed hair and nail stations on the way back to the waxing room. Angela, the aesthetician, and I chatted about our shared history of working in cosmetics, so that was nice since it can be a little awkward when someone is ripping the hair out of your crotch for the first time. She seemed a little hesitant and it took longer than it usually does, BUT the end result exceeded my expectations and I suffered far less skin irritation than usual.
I asked about the price of a pedicure on my way out and it was more than I’m willing to pay (I don’t need the complete spa experience, I just want shaped and painted toe nails). But the bikini wax was within my usual price ballpark. And I like to do my part to support businesses in downtown St Paul. I’ll be back to Details, no doubt.

Been going here off and on for years. Definitely going to be going regularly now. Katie is a color genius and Monica is a brow artist! Love them! Sooooo happy! :-)

Went on the Unilocal deal to do a mani pedi with a friend. The set-​up is kind of funky. My pedi lasted 3 days, hers lasted 3 hours. Ho-​hum.

I finally got around to getting the GEL nails. I have to admit I did stray based on price, and had a very good result. As soon as I walked in, I felt special. You are paying to not have the assembly line vibe. The gel is still part of the OPI line. This lasts even longer than Axiuum. At this point they have more variety of colors, and the gel colors are limited. I hope I convinced them to bring more in. I was actually going back and forth which way to go. The systems actually involve a different drying technique, and gel is much less. It holds up really well. I didn’t plan on moving furniture around this weekend. And to my shock they held up. Even my husband commented on how gorgeous they are. I picked a teal color, that actually goes with everything. It’s quite a shock that a nail system has evolved in 2 years. After meeting Brian, the owner I know he’s on the cutting edge of everything. I got to meet his gorgeous wife, Elizabeth, and she was helping me out with the bare minerals products, that are now half off til they are gone, because they are introducing a new mineral cosmetics line. Meghan even took me in an hour early on Good Friday. I love this place more every visit.

Had a little snafoo with an experimental manicure, but they straightened it all out. Great customer service and results!

So glad i found Details and Peter Duerr! Went looking for a new stylist in Woodbury, found nothing to my liking. I prefer an experienced male stylist with some masculine edge/​funk (if they wear it, they can do it). Sat down, talked, he listened and then took over, even explained why I’ve always gotten «ear flaps» 4 weeks into other salons haircuts. Very satisfied.

Returned to get the sides evened-​up from first cutting.
I don’t know… Maybe I hadn’t made myself clear to Alex or maybe I had and she did not fully understand my request. What I ended up with was not what I was seeking. Instead of cutting the left side to match the angle of the right side, she cut back the right side and also shortened up the left side to match it.
It also would have been nice (and considerate) to have been offered an apology for having to return there to get the cut «right» (as it should have been when I walked out of there the first time). I think I would feel differently about this had I not had to pay for the cut in the first place.

Peter was absolutely wonderful, he was so knowledgable about the products and what would work for me and my hair type! I had such a good time and left with a super cute hair cut!
Barbara was also wonderful, she did a totally awesome brow wax! I’m most definitely going back for a facial of some sort and for sure for my next wax!
I have been struggling trying to find a stylist and a salon that I can go to instead of jumping around, and I think I’ve found it! I’ll see you guys again soon! And I will remember to park in the right parking lot next time for some validation! ;-)

From the moment Brittany picked up the phone to the hair cut with Peter to the minute I left the salon, I had a great experience with Details. Their service and friendliness is top-​notch, first and foremost, and the place is hip. It’s in a great area though parking in downtown St. Paul is always a you-​know-​what. They validate parking in the Lawson parking structure, so you’ll be in good shape! I’m not from the TC area and I have my own stylist in Milwaukee, but I would recommend Details as I was very pleased with service. And the Unilocal deal? Awesome, seriously!

I break up with the people who cut my hair a lot. Its not them, its me. You see, I don’t want to pay $ 50 for a haircut. So, I usually try to find some new up and comer at a hair place who are priced lower, stick with them for a while, but eventually they get too expensive and we have to break up. I’m happy for them that they’re doing well, but the quest for a new person to cut your hair can be a long, painful and lonely journey.
I got my hair cut at a place called Details in Highland Park for years and years, and moved from stylist to stylist very happily there but then it closed and I ambled despondently from place to place. Then I discovered Details in downtown… I don’t know if its the same place, but I am pleased as punch with my haircuts and the overall service provided there.
Michele cuts my hair now, and it is just how I like it. Its convenient to get my haircut there since I work downtown, and its an easy walk to and from. I recommend Details. I know I’ll be a customer here for a long time.

A great blow– out for 25 bucks? Yes, please. They fit me in on nye, which was awesome! Lots of people getting great-​looking updos. The weird beds you lie on to get your hair washed are strangely relaxing. It isn’t the poshest salon, but they know what they are doing and get it
done quick. Everyone there was so nice and professional. If I lived in St. Paul I’d never wash my own hair again if I had this place.

Here is how my haircuts used to go: I’d go into a salon, get my hair cut, and then cry. It was too short or not short enough or it looked weird and my (now) husband had to put up with a high-​pitched wail about how I’d never be even marginally cute again. Ever again.
Total girl meltdown mode every time.
No wonder I began cutting my own hair for a while.
Then I started going to Details. I’ve been going there for about 8 years and I have yet to cry after a haircut. I know that doesn’t *sound* like a really strong endorsement, but believe you-​me, it is.
My main hair guy is Brian – the owner of the salon. However, I have had other stylists with equally good results. They’ll cut your hair how you want it, and exactly how you want it – or they are perfectly capable of suggesting everything from a subtle change to a super-​funky cut. The stylists are, however, incredibly respectful of your feedback and won’t push anything on you.
They also cut hair for YOU. I’m not one to use hair product or even blowdry my hair. Instead of giving me a cut that will only look good if I spend eons in the bathroom in the morning, they cut for my lifestyle.
They’re also up on the latest techniques. It’s clear that the stylists receive ongoing training and attend regular seminars; often they’ll explain that they just learned a better way to do something that produces even more amazing results than the last time. This isn’t to say that they’re not already skilled or are in NEED of training – it’s just that they keep themselves sharp and up-​on-​trends.
Best of all – since I’m not a gal who likes to go to the salon every few weeks (more like quarterly or tri-​yearly) – they know how to cut hair so that it looks good and has great shape as it grows out, too. (They also offer free bang-​trims for clients.)
The experience itself is great. Parking in DT St. Paul can be challenging, but they validate parking in the Lawson (I think – it’s either Lowry or Lawson) ramp for 3 hours of time. They offer you refreshment (tea, coffee, water) immediately upon arrival. The staff is friendly and approachable. The hair cut (at least with Brian) starts with a scalp and neck massage – which is incredibly relaxing. There’s also the standard shampoo and the style/​blowdry afterward.
The only negative – be sure to have plenty of time, or to tell them that you’re on a tight schedule. The haircut can stretch over the typical hour-​appointment and if the appointment after you has canceled, your stylist might just «play» with your hair for a while if they don’t know you need to leave right away. This also means that your appointment may start a little bit late if someone else has run overtime.
Edited to Add: Oh yeah, Details is also VERY active in the community. About 1 in 4 times I’ve been there, they’ve told me about some charity concert (music in Mears Park) or event (packing food boxes for shelters with their staff) that they’re hosting or putting on. This has been pretty non-​intrusive (usually just a postcard on the mirror and the stylist mentioning it) and I don’t mind it, but some people might be a bit irked by it. So that’s both a potential positive and/​or potential negative point.

After recently moving to the area, I shopped around for a new place to get the ‘do cut and styled. After getting trimmed like a Chia Pet by the many low cost barber options that abound, a friend recommended Details Style Lab. You pay a bit more, but the result is worth it to me. Leaving there I look ready for work. Leaving the competitors, I felt like a kindergartner who just cut my own bangs.
