There’s nothing better than the joy and excitement you feel leaving the salon with freshly colored tresses, knowing the hours (and dollars) you spent in the process were all worth it. But not ever salon appointment has a happy ending…
I was in town visiting my father and the salon was able to squeeze me in for a cut and a color. I had originally asked for Oanh (the owner of the salon), but she was completely booked and I was placed with a junior hairdresser named Maddie (under Oanh’s supervision.)
During the consult, I explained in detail to Oanh and Maddie that I had plan to donate my hair to Patene Beautiful Lengths and that the minimum length required is 8″.
When I got to the chair, Oanh immediately gathered my hair for the cut. When I questioned Oanh about washing and conditioning my hair precut (as directed on the website), she blew it off and said it wasn’t necessary. I should’ve just got up and left right then and there, but I didn’t– I was too trusting.
After the cut, Maddie handed me my hair and I knew that I had made a mistake. Even after I had showed Oanh the «Donation Requirement» info. on the Patene website, she took the liberty of measuring my hair at 12.5″ instead of the 8″ (see photo.) Although the junior hairstylist should have corrected Oanh because any good stylist worth her salt would have noted that it wasn’t 8″, I don’t blame her for the cut.
Now on to the color. I addressed my concern about orange hair– Oanh assured me that the color would be more on the ash side. The color was fine when I left the salon, but after a few shampoos (yes, I used color-​treated shampoo) it looks brassy. I’ll be in New York at the end of the month and I’ll have a colorist touch up my roots and add a toner.
Few people would disagree that hair is an important part of how we look– a great hairstyle goes a long way to making us feel and look good. Sure, I could’ve refused to pay for the cut, but I didn’t. My hair will grow and no permanent damage was done. However, I will say that I felt Oanh was careless with my hair. She ignored and disregarded my input and my overall perception of the salon is that it lacks professionalism. For one, DON’T ever, ever, ever have your cell phone on the salon floor. It is one of the most unprofessional things to do in the salon. Also, the staff here should consider working on their trade and not aim to be the Jack-​Of-​All-​Trades and master to none.
Lastly, the best part of my experience here was the shampoo and that was done by one of the NAIL technicians! Although, she had no business shampooing my hair, she was very sweet and gave me a great scalp massage.

I was not impressed by this place. It was really expensive and my manicure was NOT worth $ 12 and my pedicure was DEFINITELY not worth $ 25. The polish bubbled up, she didn’t paint the cuticle area at all and it wasn’t even, she left layer marks, and the file completely shredded my nails.
I would have given this place one star, except for the mani/​pedi that my 5 year old sister received. My sisters leg is deformed and she only has 2 and a half toes on that foot. I called ahead about this and they were very understanding. They gave her a perfectly normal pedicure and showed no signs of being upset or grossed out and it was really lovely. I really appreciate that. The lady she had gave her a lovely mani and pedi and even a little Hello Kitty design on her thumbs and big toes.
I had Olivia, and my sister had Yasminka (I probably spelled this wrong). So if you’re gonna get your nails done here, go to her. It’s a nice spa area and the chairs are comfy. But it’s nothing special, especially for the price.

My stylist is Oahu (pronounced One). She is AWESOME. I had to leave my last stylist (which I loved) because the salon that she worked for kept raising her services every 6 months. I was referred to Oahu from a family friend. Very nice and does a great job of my hair and is over 30% less in price than the other salon I went to.
She washes, cuts, blow dry, and style my hair.
Eli (Elle) does the best shampoo. She is the best. I would pay her to wash my hair all day. :-)

Elle does great gel manicures! They always turn out great and last over 2 weeks! The price is great too. I’ve been to a bunch of places in St. Louis and highly recommend Elle.
