The Fortune Teller Bar

Super awesome bartender with a very crafty menu. We were also able to take our dogs in after the dog parade so you’re always a winner in my book! Will be back to try more food!

Woo, Fortune Teller Manhattan!
The Hubs and I are a fan of this lovely neighborhood bar and is in wandering distance of other neighborhood gems. It is dimly lit and they are usually playing good music. The bar staff has always been friendly and the cocktails have always been tasty. They make a lot of their own mixing stuff and usually have a special drink happening. They do have a food menu but we haven’t had any food items here. However they all sound pretty freakin’ good and I imagine they are. The bathrooms are small and have character but most importantly they are clean. Oh, and, they have fortune tellers on duty. We have yet to have our fortune told but if ya want to it’s a thing here.
We don’t go out much but when we do this is a regular spot. Mos def check it out.

You’ll think $ 8 – 10 for a cocktail, while not reasonable, isn’t outrageous… until you realize how tiny the pours are. They taste good, but dang. If I’m down on Cherokee, I’ll stick to Art Bar or Whiskey Ring instead.
That said, the bartenders are really friendly, so at least there’s that.

I mainly went to see the Fortune Teller, which was fantastic! Sara did a phenomenal job and I got a lot of good energy from her. I drank the Red Lipped Sailor, yummmm! Its hipster heaven, for sure, but AWESOME people watching and anything goes as far as dress, the more eclectic the better!

Nice dive bar, decent music. They had a coffee stout AND a chocolate stout on tap, so I was sold. They need some higher stools, though.

I love the cocktails, the charceuterie, pickled eggs, and the cuban sammy. I’ve been in a few times in the same amount of months and have been highly disappointed in the service. This used to be my favorite place, but I am rudely ignored, people are waited on blatantly after me, and I’m a legit pleasant customer. What gives guys? I know the Whiskey Ring took some of your business, but be nice to the people who still love you. Sigh.

So my old fashion was ¹⁄₃ of an old fashion by volume, the waitress with the rat tail was rude, swing music was good though.

I tend to gravitate towards all things «creepy», so it goes without saying that I’ll eventually find myself in the bar that has spooky skeletons and taxidermy in the front window. And wouldn’t you know that The Fortune Teller Bar’s name is exactly what it sounds like: they actually bring in mystical folk to share your future with you!
The vibe of the place reminds me a lot of a bar back home — divey and dark with a longer wait time than they have patrons for, but friendly enough nonetheless.
I decided on a cocktail and sprung for The Full Sneak: Hatfields and McCoy’s whiskey, Canton ginger, fresh lemon, ginger ale, Ruby Port float, and a fresh sprig of mint. What I received was so pretty and smelled so nice, I was almost inclined not to drink it at all. And it may be my usually dry tastes, but when I did take my first few sips it was so cloyingly sweet I could barely finish it.
After the boy got his standard beer, we decided to take a seat at a table on some very wobbly chairs near the door so I could keep an eye on the fortune teller’s booth. How could I resist? I needed to get the full experience of the place.
A tiny sign outside of said booth read «Fortunes by Nikki $ 10 recc’d». I stared for the longest time, trying to decipher what «recc’d» means. Eventually I’d find out that no matter what the letters actually translated to, it basically meant that Nikki didn’t have any change. And I only had a $ 20. She happily took that bill and stashed it in her pint glass without another thought. Perfect, thanks!
While I think I was in the booth with Nikki all of six minutes (for $ 20!), I was actually somewhat surprised when what she shared with me was eerily accurate. I want to note that this was a tarot card reading; I don’t know if this changes based on who’s working the booth at the time.
All in all, a quirky bar worth stopping in if you happen to find yourself across the street (which we did), but not necessarily worth going out of your way for. Be sure to check out the little apothecary up front!

Drinks were reasonably priced for a well-​crafted cocktail but my god the wait to get one felt like a lifetime. I wouldn’t mind going back on an off night in order to get a bit better service. Yeah the staff was overwhelmed but on a Friday night it should be expected that business will be up and therefore staffing should be better.

Your fortune… not feeling welcome and a lot of waiting around… The bar staff ignored my friends and I for almost 15 minutes (there were only a few people at the bar). The 2 bartenders that night (a tattoo guy with a do-​rag and a hipster chick) were too cool to care about the bar’s patrons and too busy chatting with friends. Once we did get served, we were greeted coldly and made to feel like we were not wanted there. Shortly after we got our drinks we wanted to get our check to move on to somewhere with a better vibe but it took another 15 minutes of trying to make eye contact and finally having to yell hey to get someone’s attention.

We spent several late nights boozing in The Fortune Teller Bar during our latest excursion to St. Louis. It is located on Cherokee Street which has lots of boutiques, antiques, bars & restaurants. The Whiskey Ring is practically next door, so you can safely, easily travel between 2 good spots.
We loved the vibe in The Fortune Teller. It was quiet when we’d go — I intentionally avoid crowds. Divey and dark with lots of mystical décor and taxidermy.
Craft cocktails are the thing here. I tried several but particularly liked the Chicago Sidecar with Buffalo Trace. They have an extensive selection of most poisons — so I also sampled the different whiskeys behind the bar. The bartenders are nice and very knowledgeable here.
Oh…I guess they have food! hahahaha. Sadly, we’d come in too late to try the food.

Love this place! Great drinks in a fun laid back atmosphere. I love a good, fancy cocktail bar but when it comes to finding a home base, this is more my speed as I can get a great cocktail and a cheap beer in one stop! Love the décor, love the bar tenders, love the people watching on the patio.

The ambiance in this place is phenomenal. The creative cocktails are as well. The service… eh. It could be better.
It was during the day, and as we were driving by, I saw that they had tables out on the sidewalk… AND drink specials. SOLD. When I walked up to the building, I was immediately in love: it had a carnival-​esque décor that reminded me of pre-​Katrina New Orleans, an aesthetic that is just… well…me. It’s definitely a place that I could see myself spending way too much time in. Additionally, I love weird cocktails, so the Alpine Daisy (Ransom Old Tom Barrel Aged Gin, Fresh Lemon, Salers Apéritif Gentiane, House-​made Grenadine, & Soda) was, among others, a huge hit. (And besides… how can you not love a place that serves a drink called «Said the Actress to the Bishop?!») I’ll definitely be back the next time I am up that way.
The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was because of the service. It was slow, and the bartender exuded snobbery and ennui, with a dash of attitude. But after a round or two, it stops mattering as much anyway.

Fun, divey, with a dash of otherworldly psychic magic. The space is dimly lit and décor adds to the clairvoyant/​fortune telling ambiance. Decent beer selection too. They have a fortune teller on Friday and Saturday nights who reads tarot cards. It is definitely a fun corky little place to check out along Cherokee. THey have food too, but we already ate when we stopped through. Maybe next time!

The cocktails are great but I think maybe one bartender for the whole place is not enough. That is the only reason I didn’t rate it five stars. The food was exceptional, with delicious twists on old favorites. I would recommend it.

This is the place to go for a finely-​crafted cocktail from a knowledgable and experienced bartender. It has a cool Cherokee Street vibe and is the perfect pit stop during a day or night down at Cherokee Street. The fortune tellers are such a cool touch! I was rather impressed with my reading. A must see!

This place is awesome!
I’ve only been once, and didn’t eat, but i’ve heard incredible things about the food here. Going back for food is definitely on my to-​do list.
Great space with plenty of seating. We had a huge group and the staff was very accommodating in helping us move a bunch of tables together so that we were able to fit everyone. Cocktail menu looked awesome (i’ll revise the review after i go for dinner) and the beer selection was great.
The owner was working, she was super nice. She even helped some people in our group start a fire out front in the fire ring. It’s refreshing to see small business owners actually working and being involved in their businesses.
Cherokee streed needs this place! I’m so glad it’s here and i hope its been a success. Cant wait to go back for food and cocktails.

Eh, it was an okay experience. The patio outside is nice, but we were bothered by some crazy homeless guy (who was actually quite friendly, he just made me uncomfortable and wouldn’t go away). I kind of want to dock a star though because the bartender put someone else’s tab on top of my friend’s – his $ 17 tab came up as $ 40 and it took half an hour to sort out. Not cool.

I love the drink menu here, so creative! My new favorite is the Red Lipped Sailor. We went on a Friday night and it was a to. Of fun, especially since they were rocking an early 90’s playlist.

This place is my favorite bar on Cherokee. It’s almost a perfect equation.
It gets its name because, surprise, you can get your fortune told! On busy nights, there is almost always someone here in a small «aerie» at the front to read tarot or palms or something like that for you. The vibe isn’t campy at all — it’s very earthy and warm.
Also, hey, THE FORTUNE TELLER IS NOT FREE. Just thought I’d clear this up. You should tip $ 5-​$ 20 depending on how much you enjoy or appreciate the fortune.
first of all, if you haven’t been here in a bit, the place has doubled in size. So there are no longer space concerns. And they have real furniture now as opposed to the barrels they were once using as tables. So yay!
As for drinkin, this place is the bomb. They sport fancy or unique cocktails and unique liquors from small and large distilleries (Death’s Door, Pinckney Bend, Pow-​Wow, etc.), but they also have a number of the old standbys, which means that I can bring both my «professional drinker» friends and my «give me a drink that I know» friends. I have had the best damn moscow mule ever here, and their bar staff know EXACTLY what they are doing. I’ve never been ignored by staff here (which is usually just part of going to bar, accepting that you’ll be ignored at some point), and this place manages to walk the line between being slightly upscale in product while being very casual and down-​to-​earth in presentation and tone.
they have a range of food with good vegetarian options, but I’ve never personally been super impressed by their menu. It’s serviceable, with some unique options (an interesting bisque or special kind of bread, for example).
The bar patrons themselves are all over the map: you’ve got your Cherokee hipsters and hold-​outs, your Benton Park and South Grand locals who’ve walked over for the evening, your yuppies who are happy to be having a drink and are delighted by the «common folk,» and your county visitors who aren’t sure whether they are thrilled or scared. Sometimes there are some grumpy hipsters who seem angry that «their» neighborhood has people visiting who aren’t like them, but they are few and far between.
All in all, I highly recommend this place. If they had a better food selection, I’d be over the moon.
