Sublime! Everything from the Gravlax and Cuke to the Danish Braised Pork to the Mardi Gras cake were beyond belief. It’s a tiny piece of culinary heaven. Succulent. Savory. Sweet. Not to be missed. And, I don’t even like milk, but their Coconut Chocolate Milk made me a believer.

The concept of Milque Toast Bar is really on point — it’s a very trendy concept of eating toasts for your meal. Paired with some delicious coconut/almond and other milks. However, the atmosphere here was a little cramped, as I went with my husband and 10 month old baby. There is just 1 community table that seats about 9 – 10 people and the overall space is no bigger than 1,000 sq ft. We were a little tight, to say the least. I love the idea of the community table, it is hard when there is just one. The food was definitely yummy. We ordered a few specials, the lox and horseradish and one of the soup specials as well. My daughter at the tomato and havarti avocado toast and she loved it. The bread was thick and yummy. The portions were also quite large. If you are on the hungry side, definitely order more than one. I would go back without my daughter and without my husband and bring some of my girlfriends back to try the milks and a few more toasts.

I stopped at Milque Toast Bar on Saturday at lunch time. When people say it’s tiny they are right. It’s tiny! It seats about 10 – 12 people. I ended up sitting in a children’s book nook surrounded by story books. I ordered the Avocado Tomato and Havarti with Sriracha aioli and watercress toast and a hot tea. I was told when I ordered it that they were out of tomato and using red pepper instead and since I thought that sounded even better I said great. It was great. The bread was great. All the components went together perfectly. There was some black salt sprinkled on the top that was perfect. There was a little bit of coleslaw next to the toast. I ate everything on the plate. This wasn’t a huge meal and I could have eaten more but wasn’t looking to eat a lot at the moment. I completely get what they’re trying to do here and the execution is flawless. Great little spot and I’m looking forward to going back to try more of the menu.

More than just Milque and toast as the namesake would lead you to believe, a neighborhood restaurant that McKinley Heights can truly call its own. Let’s be honest the name(Milque Toast bar) is somewhat deceiving, and the pre-opening chatter lead you to believe there’s nothing but Milque and toast; I for one was somewhat skeptical. I remember several punchlines in the comment section of the RFT when the restaurant premise was announced. Nevertheless on a cold wintery late morning we walked in to Milque Toast and stepped into weekend breakfast euphoria. Literally the restaurant is a converted shotgun space that’s been adapted into a restaurant, high ceilings but low overhead. Refinished concrete floors and brick walls gives it a raw and natural feeling, while the vintage Americana spread throughout interior offers tidbits of charm. Oh yeah, the menu… Take a minute to understand the menu as you were probably just expecting finger-food. This restaurant offers a wide array of specials daily like Gravlax and cucumber, smoked liver wurst, all the way down to a daily crockpot special. Each and every dish is highly recommended and equally as economical, three dishes are $ 15 with a side and five dishes are $ 20 with two sides(two people). The portions are smartly rationed as you don’t gorge yourself on one particular dish but still can savor the uniqueness and creativity of each offering. Enjoy a Mississippi mud house coffee or enjoy a glass of coconut, cashew or whole milk; two offerings of teas are Available as well. I enjoyed a Gravlax and cucumber that was perfectly cured and topped with the right amount of capers, included was an ample side of the day. The portion was healthy and filling to the point where I felt full, my fiancé the same with her similar dish as well. Eventhough I’m not a fan of community seating, it’s the only logical seating arrangement considering the space their working with; they simply are short on space. I’m sure as the weather improves this can be alleviated with their open patio but still, if you don’t like your neighbors you’re going to have to deal with it or eat fast. Overall this is an excellent restaurant that embodies the neighborhood charm, and spending no more than $ 26 and leaving full, we will be back.

There were two of us and we shared the goat cheese and mushroom sandwich and the apple cheddar sandwich. Both were excellent. I would definitely choose the mushroom one again. The apple one tasted sweeter than expected; it was pretty much an apple pie sandwich. We also had broccoli cheddar soup and a lime fizz, which were also excellent. Staff are friendly. The place is very small, creative, and neat lunch spot.

Best breakfast and lunch we had this weekend, in town for a retreat. I was surprised to find this place in a quiet section of Jefferson Ave., drove past it twice. It’s tiny, not sure what its like on a Sat. morning in terms of waits, but whatever it is its worth it. Delicious, simple breakfast or lunch options, great coffee, and cool feel. Really nice surprise, hope enough of you frequent it that it stays open and available the next time we are in town. Till then, keep up the great food! TL:DR — Eat here, it’s good.

Second time visiting and again, didn’t disappoint! The Smorrebrod Brunch-pick 5 plate is the best way to share and get a little taste of them all! Some of my favorites to date were the Apple Cheddar Melt, Butternut Brûlée, Danish Spiced Pork, and S’mores Toast! Today they had homemade Pop-tarts and upon recommendation, we ended up trying 2 different favors-Butternut with Maple Icing and Strawberry with Strawberry Icing… AMAZING!!! We will be back to visit soon!

I met a friend here for lunch recently. The place is TINY — way smaller than I imagined! Luckily we were able to fit. There is only 1 table here that fit 2 parties of 2 and one of 4 comfortably. There is also a little nook where a single person sat. I’m not a fan of communal dining, but it was ok. The patio on the side that’s open when the weather is nice would be preferable. I ordered the pizza toast and the apple cheddar toast. They make their own soda flavors, which was cool. I got a strawberry one and it was delicious. It was all I could do to not order another one. The toasts were good — I liked the pizza toast the best and it was easiest to eat. The apple cheddar one was just ok to me. My friend got tomato soup with her toast and it looked yummy. We sat and chatted for awhile without feeling rushed. They even came and refilled our water and got my friend coffee, which were nice touches! I plan on going back.

Nice little spot for a short brunch. Seems like they’ve got some kinks to work out still but it’s worth a try. The iced coffee is refreshing. Fun to try something different. The place is very small, but the staff was very accommodating on trying to find a comfortable seat for everyone.

I loved this place! Close to my neighborhood, hidden on the rough street of Jefferson St. This little gem is simply a must for you to try! We ordered the broccoli and cheddar soup along with some other tasty items(I can’t remember) but what I can is that everything was simply great. The bread pudding cake was the best! Especially with the ginger syrup on top! Please try and you’ll love. It’s a bit cramped in there so be mindful. Not a huge venue to bring a big group but more like a one on one or for yourself if you dare. ;)

The restaurant is located between EYES and Fritanga– if you drive by too fast, you might miss it! There is a patio to the left of the building with lots of seating. I can’t wait for warmer weather so that we can take advantage of all the space. We stopped in around Thanksgiving, so we got to take advantage of a special toast. We ordered 5 toasts for $ 20(with 2 sides) from the specials board. –stuffing toast with chicken and gravy– the toast was literally made from stuffing! The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned. There was a small side of homemade cranberry sauce next to the toast to help balance out the«heavy» toast. –mushroom and cheese– this tasted like eating a stuffed mushroom! There was a bread for the base, topped with a wonderful cheesy/mushroom goodness. –ham, apple, cream cheese– Such thinly sliced ham, with a baked applesauce, and a thick layer of cream cheese. I want to make this at home every day! Somehow, the saltiness of the ham with the sweetness of the apple and the creaminess of the cheese work so well together. –liverwurst– my least favorite of the bunch, just because I am not a fan of sauerkraut. There was thick layer of liverwurst, topped with sauerkraut, and then topped with thin slices of apples. –peanut butter cup– the toast was a slice of blueberry bread(or some other dessert-type bread) topped with homemade peanut butter and then a wonderful chocolate ganache. It tasted like brownie batter. I licked the plate clean of all of the wonderful chocolate goodness. –potato salad(side) — meh… I think it is made with edamame to give it the green color. –roasted fall veggies– not served hot enough for my liking. Good mix of brussel sprouts, squash, onions, carrots. Well-seasoned. We should have ordered milk– the dessert toast definitely calls for milk to help wash it all down. I would have given this place 5 stars if the seating wasn’t so awkward. I am an adult. There are only children’s school chairs for seating. My knees were higher than my butt. My knees couldn’t fit under the table to sit comfortably. Like I said, can’t wait for patio season again so that I can take advantage of the larger seating area.

I was really excited about this place opening up and even more excited at the rave reviews here, but was totally disappointed with my experience :( The place is cute and hipster-y and tiny. It was super crowded which I took as a good sign, although annoying to find a seat with a friend. We ordered 3 toasts off the menu to share and it took 35 minutes to come out. I don’t understand why? We were so hungry so we kept looking over at them behind the counter and couldn’t figure out what was taking so long. One of the toasts we tried, the smoked salmon and gravlax was served on this dry rye with tons of grains in it that wasn’t even actually toasted, but it took so long. We ended up not even being able to eat the toast and just picked the salmon off the top. The Sloppy Joe«toast» was served on naan bread or something similar to it, and was the tastiest of the three. The Nutella s’mores toast was insanely sweet because the layer of Nutella was so thick. I think that dish could really benefit with a sprinkle of sea salt. The reason s’mores are so good is because a semi-sweet chocolate pairs so well with sweet marshmallows, but Nutella is sweet enough on its own. I honestly have one of the biggest sweet tooths of anyone but I couldn’t even finish this without wiping most of the Nutella off. It might just be a personal preference, although my friend agreed with me. The total for 3 small toasts came to $ 21 and since I only really enjoyed one of them which technically wasn’t even toast, it really wasn’t worth it. We left feeling kinda bummed. Judging from the other reviews maybe we just happened to go on a bad day but I’m not too inclined to try it again.

I came here with a lab friend for a lunch date! I got the soup(it had a lovely tint of spice) and we shared a toast. The mushroom one was really good! We also shared dessert — the bread pudding. We ate every bite of that. The place is cute. It’s also TINY! I’m so amazed that it’s a real restaurant considering the size! I loved the people working there — they were really nice and friendly. All in all, this was a great experience.

What a great find on Jefferson! Open a little over a month, the smorrebrod are delicious and inventive. This is really a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Tasty, intimate and charming. We will be back and bringing our friends! Yumm!

What a great surprise! Fantastic food and a knowledgeable staff. The first time I’ve ever tried Scandinavian food and this won’t be my last. I had the Pizza Toast and it was out of this world. It was a great piece of bread with fresh and tasty ingredients. Only issue I had was that it was a bit hard to find. Even standing right in front of it it was elusive as their window sign was difficult to read.

+ Fresh, thoughtfully prepared ingredients + Super friendly staff + Outdoor patio seating for sunny days + Easy street parking Toast is basically the best thing since sliced bread! Being from the Bay Area in California, it is nice to see a deservingly trendy concept hop its way over to the Midwest. Things on toast = better than things alone or toast alone. Especially when such things are CRAWFISHREMOULADE or liverwurst or gravlax. I love this place for its weekend Smörgåsbord, aka unpronounceable Smørrebrød — about 5 topping choices are offered, and you can choose to have 3 toppings(3 toasts) with 1 side for $ 15, or all 5 with 2 sides for $ 20. It’s a great way for greedy people like me to get to sample some of everything without having to commit to just one toast(the horror!). The toppings range from things like the aforementioned crawfish, liverwurst, and gravlax, to vegetarian-friendly options like white bean & kale. The toppings are served on top of toasted bread from local bakeries. The rye bread is deliciously savory and nutty and the various toasts you get are served on different types of toast. The combinations are just fantastic. The liverwurst topping comes with sauerkraut, apples and grainy mustard. The gravlax comes with cucumber, horseradish cream, and capers. The crawfish remoulade has a delightfully light creamy remoulade dressing to hold it together with peppers and celery. I can’t comment on the milks that they offer as I have not tried any yet, but they look promising and I’ll certainly be back to try. As patio weather is soon leaving us in the dust, I highly recommend enjoying a nice toast(or 3, or 5) on a sunny day out on the patio, where you can take a peek into their garden and enjoy a quiet setting to lunch with friends.

What a tucked away surprise!!! This place seats like 12 people maximally, so I would not recommend taking a group. But for the times when you’re on your own for lunch or having a lovely lunch date with your bestie, Milque Toast is a go-to. The basic premise is this: a great piece of bread topped with something creative and wonderful. Many of us have all seen iterations of this type of food on Instagram with the familiar hashtag«fitfood» and have silently wished we were so creative as to put something similar together ourselves. Now, you don’t have to. You can go to Milque Toast and taste their chef’s most imaginative creations and classic remixes. Think lox meets a delicious slice of rye bread and makes their special, gravlax. They have a 3/$ 15 and a 5/$ 20 special so you can mix and match from their frequently rotating selections. The 5/$ 20 would be perfect for two to split for a light lunch. Please go here! You won’t regret it!!!

One of the first things many people learn to make on their own is toast. When I was little, I would toast bread and make sandwiches, toast bread and dip it in syrup and toast bread and spread peanut butter and honey on it. Yep, even in college my motto was«as long as I’ve got bread, I can make toast and if I can make toast I won’t be hungry.» The toast trend that began banging in the Bay Area of California and zipped over to the Big Apple is now in St. Louis yet with an added twist — Milque! The space is a mishmash of mismatched art and chairs, even lots of kiddy chairs that I saw full-grown men sitting in. The overloaded room is not for everyone but the food is! It’s hard to imagine not finding something to like on the menu. On my visit I ordered right from the«Spiffy» section of the menu. I went with the Pizza Toast(marinara, fontina, & parmesan) and the Nutty S’Mores Toast(nutella & marshmallow). Both dishes came with an unexpected side that was a true treat and delicious(a side salad and apples, respectively). The Pizza Toast was perfection and I barley recall chewing. Everything was supremely fresh as they source as many local ingredients as they can. Nutty S’Mores = dumb delicious, period. For a beverage I went with a local soda with strawberry additive. I didn’t like it so I won’t be doing that again. Made me wish I went with milk — you’ll really need it to wash down that Nutty S’Mores. The service was nice and friendly! They were really concerned with if things were enjoyable and they were. Everything is very reasonably priced and I believe that you can pay extra and those donations go to provide a meal for someone who otherwise couldn’t afford it(like the cool concept that is used in Clayton at the St. Louis Bread Co/Panera). With just one visit under my belt I’d give Milque a solid 4 stars. Milque is a strong stakeholder in South City; doing something unique to the Metro Area while fostering a strong sense of community. Whether you live in or near McKinley Heights, jump off of 44 and Jefferson and give this place a go! Side note: I’d appreciate and love to see the use of gloves and hairnets. Since the cooks run the food out to the dinning area and the outside patio that leaves lots of space an opportunity for unwanted variables.

Super cute, vegan-friendly restaurant with a limited«build your own» sort of menu. You can build your own beverage by picking a milk(including house-made nut milks) or coffee and adding a syrup(the ginger chai was excellent). The menu is focused around simple to gourmet toasts. Pick a bread and pick your toppings. I honestly felt lost as to what to build, so I asked the chef if she could make me something vegan. She put together an amazing toast — pumpernickel, cashew pâté, heirloom tomatoes, topped with tangy greens. The savory and tangy flavors balanced each other well. The place is small and cozy, and very cutely decorated. I’ll definitely be back!

I Love this new restaurant!!! Scandinavian food is my favorite. Such a cute place. I had 3 different sandwiches. The liver pâté with apples, crawfish salad, and gravlax. All made in house. Whenever you can have homemade potato salad, you know they care about all their sides. I will be going often!
