Gooey Louie

This is hands down my favorite gooey butter cake in St. Louis, and the owner is incredibly personable. Every time I stop in his shop, I’m reminded of his sense of pride and excitement over his business. It’s truly refreshing. So many flavors, so fresh, and a great price!

This was my first experience with Butter Cakes and this spot seemed like the obvious place to start. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. It was super clean inside and they had some tasty sounded varieties. It was suggested by numerous people I talked to that it would be best to start with the Original and go from there — so that is what I did. Delicious! My only complaint is that they didn’t have slices and you had to buy a whole pie. Not the end of the world, it definitely didn’t go to waste!

Not much substance to the gooey butter cake. Super thin. I wondered what I was paying for. Other places in stl have much better gooey butter cake.

Seems to be living off reputation. Not being able to puchase smaller individual cakes is a major strike off the bat and then $ 12 for a sheet of cake that I may or may not enjoy seems a bit steep. Not bad but better options exist.

What a FAB find… light and creamy with the sweet buttery taste of custard-​esq… so unique and what a great treat. I tried the orginal,

I used to live a block from this place and would frequent all the time. I still make the trek to Gooey Louie when I’m in the neighborhood. Soft, fluffy, melts-​in-​your-​mouth gooey butter cake that is my personal favorite. Grab the Chocolate Chippewa.

These cakes are consistent. I come here when I have guests in town who have to try some of the «local» foods, go to birthday parties, or if I am looking for a good food gift.
This place is worth the drive.

I stopped in mid-​afternoon on the weekend, and there were very few cakes left. Luckily, I scored a chocolate chip gooey butter cake.
The owner was very kind, but she gave me change from her own wallet, so I feel as if she might need a little business organization.
She adamantly insisted that I not refrigerate the cake. I am very used to the cake being either cold or frozen, but I listened to the expert’s advice and wish I hadn’t. While the cake may dry out faster in the fridge, it’s also much tastier.
Overall, it’s good gooey butter cake, but I can make one that is very similar.

Wow, I was really disappointed. We had a bakery in Belleville when I was a kid that people would line up at for gooey butter cakes. They were gooey, buttery and sweet. This $ 12 gooey butter cake I got at Gooey Louie was like egg custard consistency, not like any gooey butter cake I have ever had and quite disappointing. I ate half of a piece and tossed the rest because I am not an egg custard fan at all. Maybe this is a new version of gooey butter cake but it doesn’t match and recipe I have seen or tatsed before.

This place is basically just a production facility that you can buy a cake from. It is not a café and there is nowhere to eat or anything like that.
I’ve tried many of their flavors, but prefer regular old GBC. It’s not bad by any means, but it is not the best I’ve had, either. Too gooey/​liquidy. The cakes were 12 bucks a piece, which I personally think is outrageous. They did not sell individual pieces either.
I think this place is a fun place to take an out-​of-​towner or new-​in-​towner, as we did, and gets by on the novelty of their packaging. Definitely a good gift item, but if you just want to eat some gooey butter cake on your own for shits and giggles, go get one for 5 bucks at Schnucks, or make your own– it is SUPER easy, and actually usually tastes better than anything you could buy at a store.
Super friendly and enthusiastic owner who is totally oblivious to the fact that you have places to go and things to do, most importantly your car to eat St. Louis’ 12-​dollar mistake.

Absolutely amazing gooey butter cakes! These are my go-​to gift for out of towners. It smells amazing as soon as you walk in, and the family who owns it is the nicest! Great service and great cakes. Definitely a St. Louis must-​do.

Definitely my favorite gooey butter cakes. I like that the consistency isn’t the grainy, sugary kind that many places have. It is almost coffee cake/​cheesecake-​like instead and totally delicious. Yum!

This is it, the one thing in St. Louis that we wandered around to find that really did not live up to the hype.
It was an interesting experience, I have never seen a store front quite like it, it was large you walked through a room to get to another room where there was one counter with one person and a menu of gooey butter cakes. There was no cake display, they were all in back I guess. All this space and not a product to be seen. The setup looked like a front for some other perhaps not legitimate business; think bookie or massage parlor. Really strange.
We ordered an original for our $ 11.00 and left.
It was tasty but it tasted a lot like the metal pan it was served and probably cooked in.
Anyway, it was an experience!

First time stopping in. Loved that the gooey butter cakes are displayed like its a gallery. Owner Kirk was very friendly and helpful. Got the chocolate peanut butter cup cake as a birthday cake and it was sinfully delicious (and almost gone). Family from New Orleans came in at the same time. Gooey butter cake fame spread!

Unilocalers, you know that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you want a place to stay around forever? That’s how I feel about Gooey Louie.
There’s no other dessert that screams St. Louis more than Gooey Butter Cake. And after living in the area for four years now, Gooey Louie has always been my consistent favorite. And yet – I’d never ventured out to their store!
Parking out back is cramped – ten pickup trucks in one alleyway means bad news for everyone. But once inside, you’ll find that the owner is super friendly, makes conversation with each and every customer, one at a time – which is a great touch. They were out of Turtle Park in the front of the store, but upon asking, he ran to the back, grabbed one that was still cooling, finished the caramel and chocolate garnishes and packed one up for us!

Parking here is a headache. There is no street parking, so you have to park in back after navigating a tight, pot-​holey alley, and it’s not clearly marked which store in the strip you should be parking in. To get to the store, you have to walk around through that alley or a narrow gangway that could potentially not be very safe (although the neighborhood is not bad and has heavy traffic.)
I was greeted promptly, but was disappointed to find that by 1pm the blueberry cakes were already sold out (and there was only one or two each of the other flavors left). Lack of inventory was blamed on being the day before Mother’s Day, but from the reviews here, it seems to be common. After I selected my cakes, the gentleman who greeted me was bragging how they were just taken out of the oven, and didn’t seem to want to let up until I agreed that I felt they were «oven warm» (which they weren’t). It was nice that they had special Mother’s Day stickers available for the boxes.
The cakes are good (rich, buttery, unique flavor I’ve never had in a gooey butter cake, and the crispy edges are caramely deliciousness!), but was disappointed that the pans were barely ¹⁄₃ full, so you kind of feel like you got the the «bowl scrapings» to get one last cake out of the batch. Got one regular and one of the «Driving Me Nuts». The nut one was barely worth the $ 1 up charge for the amount of extra product in it.
Is it a great, quality product? Yes. Is it a value? Not even a little bit. Will I be back? For special occasions only.

As if gorging ourselves on pizza was not enough, we then ventured to Gooey Louie for a little dessert. From what I could tell, you could only buy a whole tray of gooey butter cake. They were fairly priced at $ 11, but I didn’t need that many calories in my apartment tempting me whenever I walked by, so I passed on buying one. One of my co-​workers bought a couple trays of the original recipe for the office and when I sank my teeth into that tiny piece of cake, I could’ve sworn fireworks went off in my mouth. I’ve had gooey butter cake before, but it didn’t taste like this. This is what cake hopes to be when it grows up. There are no adjectives in the English language that could accurately and completely describe the glory of all that is Gooey Louie’s gooey butter cake. It is a MUST for all those within a close proximity of St. Louis.

Today I experienced heaven, and it tasted like Gooey Louie Blueberry Butter Cake.
I was out exploring, looking for bakeries to sample, and lucky me — I found Gooey Louie on Chippewa.
The shop is small and unassuming, and there are no tables at which to sit and relax. But you know what? That’s fine. This allows you to take your Gooey Louie Butter Cake home and eat the whole pan in the privacy of your kitchen.
Not that I did that.
Yet.
When I walked in the OWNER greeted and waited on me — he’s quite chatty and friendly. His friends call him Captain. Well the Captain and I had a nice visit, during which I discovered that he’s been doing this for 7 years. He loves what he does, and I mean he really LOVES doing this. You can tell. Gooey Louie Butter Cake is made daily and from only fresh whole ingredients — no preservatives.
They’re the winner of the best Gooey Butter Cake for 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Not sure who gave them this honor, but it’s on his menu. Frankly I don’t care. The cake is that heavenly.
The Captain has a display of his freshly made desserts, and you select which (and how many) 8×8 boxes of butter cake you want. If you’re not sure, he’ll describe the cakes and give you a bit of history on the flavors. You’ll pay $ 11 for original Gooey Louie and $ 12 for flavored. BTW Iron Chef Michael Simon is partial to the Blueberry. That was good enough for me. I came home and ate half the pan. In my kitchen. The night’s still young though. I might eat the other half… I think Louie is calling me.

I popped in to get a visiting friend a «true STL treat»
The owner was the only one there, but he was more than willing to pop out of the back to help me decide on what to get. Such a sweet guy! Learned a lot about his business and how it all came about.
Great STL gem. My friend said it was a bit too sweet for him… but it’s gooey butter cake. to be expected.

Returned to Gooey Louie this past weekend and literally got a slap on the hand from the owner for buying too many cakes and not leaving enough for the next customer! So, I am here to give you some advice — if you love Gooey Louie Butter cakes as much as I do and, when in St. Louis, plan on «stocking up» (more than say 3 or 4) please call ahead and let the owner know what you need and when you will be picking them up — this will avoid an awkward encounter. Lesson learned.
I still love these wonderful cakes and will keep visiting this quirky shop whenever I am in the LOU!

Yummy Yummy Yummy, I’ve got Gooey Butter Cake in my tummy. Like another reviewer, I live fairly close to Gooey Louie and drove by frequently. My waist line regrets that I finally stopped by… lol.
This is little bakery is fantastic — it offers the best gooey butter cakes in the city that is know for Gooey Butter Cakes.
I’ve taken these to work, family functions and just home for us and everyone loves them. They are moist and bursting with flavor. The original is best by far, followed closely by Chocolate Raspberry and Chocolate Chippewa.
When craving Gooey Butter Cake, go to Gooey Louie for the best.
