History

Established in 2001.

The building that houses Soulard Bastille is over 150 years old, and has been a bar/​tavern for over 100 years of that. It has also served as a grocery, barber shop, diner, funeral parlor (2nd floor), and private residences (2nd and 3rd floors).

The bar features the eclectic collections and tastes of it’s owner, including record-​album lined bathrooms, sci-​fi robots, pop culture icons, Soulard’s best light show, a game room with games in-​play on all walls and ceiling, and the original funeral parlor sign.

Over the last few years, Soulard Bastille has gained popularity in the Saint Louis community as one of the première gay bars. A destination for those traveling through and locals alike, the bar attracts all walks of life: from 20-​somethings to Stonewall contemporaries, Males to Females to Transgendered, and LBGT to Straight to Humanist — All are welcome at Soulard Bastille.

Finding Bastille in Soulard was such a happy accident. The outside was decorated with Mardi Gras lights, even though it wasn’t Mardi Gras just yet. Our group, which consisted of different genders, races, and sexual orientations, but we all had a blast! The atmosphere was light and fun. The bartenders also played DJ and wanted requests from the crowd, so that made dancing even better. The bartenders were great in general — fast and friendly service, not to mention so fun. The drinks were cheap (my boyfriend and I ordered a Jack and Coke and a Vodka Tonic, the total was $ 9.50) and very generous! I’ve been back since and will be back again! I am only giving 4 stars because they allow smoking inside.

Stumbled into this bar by accident and it was fabulous!!! Great atmosphere, bartenders are a riot, and they pour very generous drinks. The only thing I didn’t like was that they still allow smoking but I will definitely be going back!

We are an older couple (50s) who were in St. Louis for a quick weekend trip visiting Sweetie Pie’s, City Diner, 1111, Sts. Peter and Paul Church and other sites. We had looked on-​line for suggestions for LGBT night spots but we’re not really into the dance clubs. Nothing wrong with them, just not our interest anymore. We read about this club on line and decided to give it a shot after a wonderful dinner at 1111. It’s a small joint in the cool Soulard neighborhood. Crowded, loud, smoky, great music, hoppin’ staff and fun atmosphere. We nursed our drinks in the back pool room and met a straight couple and had a fun chat for a while. We stayed for a couple drinks and then left about 11:30 pm as we had an early morning. All-​in-​all, we found the crowd to be friendly enough and the staff to be attentive and quick to serve and polite. Prices were reasonable too. Some folks may find it too smoky and loud. I don’t really mind that for a little bit. It’s fun to get out occasionally and be around a lot of youthful activity and mirth!

I’m a straight girl who loves Gay Bars & has bartended many throughout the years. My last stint was @ The Voo Doo in NOLA & was my home away from home bar for well over a decade. When I moved to St. Louis I never thought I’d find a bar to compare until my bestie took me to Bastille. It’s kitschy, laid back dive interior, patio bar & awesome staff sold me the first night! It’s become one of our regular hangouts & we love the owners since of humor, community & anarchy! Go to Bastille whether you’re straight or Gay. You will love it! Monday’s are their Drag Show & it’s one of the best I’ve seen in St. Louis!

Bastille is such a great bar in Soulard and I love visiting it from time to time. Drinks are pretty cheap and the service is always fabulous!
On my last visit my friends and I opted to sit outside on their sidewalk patio in order to enjoy the warm weather. Our server even added an umbrella to our table in order to help shade off some of the sun for those who didn’t want the direct sunlight.
They also have a game room in the back with darts and a pool table for those of you who like that kind of stuff. As for me, I prefer to sit back and enjoy a drink while chatting with my friends.

Absolutely everyone can come inside…
What a blast! Went in on a Monday night and had the extra treat of seeing the weekly drag show, which was a riot!
Where else could you see renditions of «My Vagina is 8 Miles Wide», followed by «Me Na Me Na» and «Poor Unfortunate Souls»? I dare you to have an answer!
I’m certainly no drag show expert but I’ve seen one at Novak’s before and this blew it out of the water! Everyone was having a great time and the whole show was very friendly and fun.
Will definitely go back!

Bastille is a great neighborhood bar in Soulard. Very casual and low key.
It is a gay bar, but as far as gay bars go, it is one of the most hetero-​friendly in town and funny enough, I have several girl friends who have met their straight boyfriends at Bastille. Drinks are poured heavy here, so walk or get a cab when you leave. Karaōke Wednesdays are a hoot.

I went here for a friend’s birthday on a Wednesday. It also happened to be Karaōke night, which a fan I am not. However that being said the DJ would play Top 40 songs after a couple of Karaōke songs.
The drinks were good and even the bartenders got in on the Karaōke action.
If you want to dance though, I recommend other places, this is definitely a Karaōke bar.

I stumbled upon this Little cozy bar after my Budweiser Factory tour. Very friendly owner and staff as well as other patrons. Enjoyed my screwdrivers for $ 3 that were heavily poured and we all ordered food from the restaurant across the street. This is one of my Fave bars I have been to in a while.

At first glance, Bastille is like the Way Out Club of gay bars – just going by the thrift store decorations adorning the walls, the ceilings, and, well, everywhere. But the decorations are a little dorkier – I think I’ve spotted some Harry Potter and definitely some Star Wars stuff.
It’s a small, dark bar, and not at all a club. As gay bars go, the crowd is a bit older and they seem to clear our pretty early. The beer selection is very minimal, but cheap. One of the best things are the games in the back room, including a mini bowling arcade game.

Oh what does a girl like better than being told she’s fabulous all night long. This happens to me every time I go to The Bastille. Actually, this happens every time I go to a gay bar, but I especially like the crowd at this bar. Everyone here is incredibly friendly and it’s not bombarded with the young, club scene types. The crowd is a little older, which means the bar is not obnoxiously loud or abrasive. It’s a very kitchy place as well. Tons of cute things covering the walls and an interesting lighting scheme above the bar make the environment a fun place to hang out. I have never thought the drinks were so expensive, but perhaps that is only because I end up here after being at The Shanti which is notoriously the most expensive bar in Soulard.
Bonus points for always being able to find a table or a seat at the bar. I really hate it when I have to spend the entire night standing…

When I first moved to St. Louis, I heard that Bastille was one of the première gay night spots in the city. Being a woman, sometimes I love to hit up gay bars because there’s absolutely no way I’m going to get hit on and I can drink with my girlfriends in peace. Peace is definitely what you’ll find at Bastille. Its super dark with lots of fun decorations on the walls (think pez dispensers and action figures) and offers unassuming bar food goodness like your standard burgers, salads, and fried goodies. Drinks here can be a bit more expensive than other places in Soulard, but if you’re looking for a fun place to go in Soulard, regardless of your orientation you’ll have a good time at Bastille. Oh, and the last time I was there they played lots of Cher, and who doesn’t like Cher?
