The Gilbert Café is open seasonally, starting in mid-march. It is located just up the road from the old General Store, the same road the leads to the Gilbert landing access area of the Buffalo National River just down the hill a short ways. The café serves the usual burgers, sandwiches, and baskets such as catfish and chicken strips. It also serves several mexicana dishes and a daily lunch special. It’s pretty good food. Prices are reasonable and the employees are very friendly and talkative. Gilbert is a tiny, quiet former railroad town, but the railroad has been gone for better than 55 years. The population is only around 15 people, but the river access draws many visitors to the quaint little hamlet.
