UC Davis Medical Center – Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology

I am going to relate to you a horrific story that unfortunately too many women can relate to; a kind of story that I would expect to be some vague memory of the past in which women were treated like garbage even by their gynecologists. I expected a lot more from a UC Davis Doctor; instead, I got the patriarchy in full form: dismissive of my concerns, blame for my issues, lack of communication regarding my condition, degrading comments, and INCORRECT information regarding medical procedures and their results. He would not answer my questions and failed to provide me with a plan for my future with the diagnosis he had given me. He told me I was fat and that I was just eating too much (like dude come on you don’t think I know that?) and that it was the reason I was suffering from my condition. While that if all fine and true, HE DIDNT ACTUALLY EXPLAIN TO ME THERE WAS A CONNECTION BETWEEN BEING OVERWEIGHT AND HAVING PCOVS. So here I am, sitting half naked on a table with this doctor and his assistant looming over me and he completely invalidates my chronic pain and provides no measure of hope as to how I’m going to move forward in hopes of correcting or at least managing the problem. So I start crying because I’m so frustrated that he won’t answer my questions and that he is treating me like I’m an inconvenient and worthless specimen to behold, and he promptly leaves and never comes back. As a woman, I have had my fair share of mistreatment at the hands of men, but to experience this in a place where you think you are safe, a place you are looking for help and guidance, is heart breaking. Women really are not valued in this world, but especially according to Dr. Liu.

I have been going to UC Davis for gynecology care for several years. I am an RN at an competing hospital. It is a huge hospital so it can be a little hard to navigate. There is ample parking and everything is relatively well signed. The clinic is very busy and a little worn down and unfortunately it looks more like a county hospital clinic.
My doctor is young, energetic, knowledgeable and thorough. She has been excellent throughout my complicated medical issue. Yes there are training docs and medical students but I have always been asked before a medical student has been allowed in the room.
The training doctors are also very good and conscientious. I am pregnant now and I am looking forward to having my baby here.

We had to switch to UCD b/​c of insurance change. I’m a retired Nurse Practitioner who used to work with Sutter. The UCD system is frightening! I can’t get call backs on referrals, wait 6 weeks to see a specialist, and their GYN OR schedule is booked out over 3 months in advance. And that is for a rule out cancer diagnosis. If you have the option, save your health-​and possibly your life-​and go elsewhere! I’m going to switch to Mercy and see if its any better. And btw, my daughter’s ER visit? 9 hours wait just to get into a room for an issue that her DOCTOR referred her to the ER for b/​c she needed «immediate attention». Whole ER stay? 12 hours.

I think that Yves’s review below is unjust and unfair. She writes «It was especially a disheartening wait considering the number of single mothers and mothers with no spousal support that always seemed to be present. Sometimes I wondered how many of these mother’s were simply looking for David O to come forward and claim to be the father of their child.»
Some people are at this OBGYN for other things than prenatal or postnatal care. It is an OBGYN/​specialist afterall. Makes me wonder how many times I’ve been judged as a married woman going in for my annual physical or under the hood issue.
Dr. Graves before he retired was absolutely amazing. Now I use Dr. Triffiero who is equally kind, quick, patient, and great at what he does. I will be using him for prenatal care, and I will be going in for some visits to see a nurse without my spouse because he doesn’t have to necessarily be at every appointment. Very unkind for that person to judge like that.

I have to say i was very happy with my ecperience here i had the best doctor she made me feel like i was the only patient she had she even came an seen me after i had my baby i would reccomend dr. rooney to anyone she is very nice very caring an gives you the attention that you need from a dr. The receptionist there are very nice as well always says hello always have a smile on there face

I recently attended an appointment with my daughter and I was very happy with the care she received. Everyone was warm, friendly and treated her as if she was the only patient in clinic.

I need to see a gynecologist (my regular doctor has been doing my paps for me), but I’m starting to move into the whole menopause stage. Four years ago I was at the UCD woman’s clinic where I had the most dreadful experience. Due to heavy bleeding and debilitating cramps (endometriosis?) I decided to try having a IUD inserted. So, I made an appointment to get the IUD put in and I met with a intern. She was friendly and all, but something told me that this may be her first or second IUD. I went along, since the regular GYN would be coming in. Well, it turned into a horrible situation where the young doctor left me bleeding and in pain. The regular doctor had to step in and use some kind of liquid to stop the bleeding! I survived. Then I went for my follow up appointment and this is when it went from bad to worst! I waiting for almost 2 hours to see a doctor. I sat in the waiting area and then they moved me to the room. I waiting until it was almost 5 pm. I walked out and asked how long would it take for the doctor to see me and they were shocked that I was back there. They were getting ready to leave for the day!!! They had forgotten about me! I walked out of there in a rage! Never! Ever had I been treated this way. I have primo-​health insurance, so it wasn’t like I could not pay. I never want to set foot in that clinic again.

Your future child is not a combo meal at an overpriced fast food restaurant, nor should it be treated like one…
We spent a few months under the care of UC Davis during my daughter’s first trimester. The entire experience was disorganized, unprofessional, and so far lacking compared to the care with whom we are receiving now. Every single appointment was equivalent to being a frozen slab of beef being run through a conveyor belt, just to be wrapped up and sent on its way.
We often found ourselves waiting in the lobby longer than it took to actually have been seen. It was especially a disheartening wait considering the number of single mothers and mothers with no spousal support that always seemed to be present. Sometimes I wondered how many of these mother’s were simply looking for David O to come forward and claim to be the father of their child. The average wait time seemed to go about 15 to 20 minutes, but our visit with the doctor would usually only last up to 5 minutes… if we had a question the doctor would have to step out to gather a file to make up for being ill prepared.
We met with a couple different specialists in hopes to find one that could provide the care and attention we were looking for. The same inexperienced, rushed, and non-​personal service was met with each one. UC Davis is after all a teaching hospital, so I guess it was to be expected. One would think the impersonal and streamlined service would at least be competitive in the means of cost and efficiency, but of course that would be asking too much. Labs had to be done twice because of delayed processing times causing blood to spoil and be unusable. Bills would come in separately and often times duplicated, taking weeks and even months to resolve. The overall cost also seemed to be more, with no benefits or incentives to continue our visits.
We eventually moved on to find better service elsewhere. UC Davis Medical Center has a lot to offer, but their OB/​GYN is one service to stay clear from… Unless of course you’re fine with wham bam thank you ma’am service… Which is probably how you ended up here in the first place?
P. S. I mean no disrespect to David O., he probably would have used protection anyway… Maybe…
