Great staff! We have been treated like movie stars. Frances has rolled out the red carpet in every way. Kayla also made my daughter’s birthday so special! Again, unexpected! You must stay here!

This hotel is nice and situated in an convent location. However two things did not sit right with me. First being the stain on the robe that is for guest to wear in the King suite. The second being the blood stain on the shower curtain. Disgusting and unprofessional. Will not be staying at this hotel ever again.

Very nice staff. Nicely appointed rooms. We stayed over on Christmas and forgot our camera with all of our sons baby pictures on it. The housekeeper was sweet and turned it into the safe and they sent it back to us. Comfy beds and clean rooms.

Aside from being such a wonderful place to stay, the staff and managers are first-​rate! First, it’s a sophisticated, intimate hotel in Sacramento’s downtown close to Capitol Mall and the new arena.
The rooms are theme-​based on Sacramento’s governmental history, with masculine stylings and plenty of 40s era political cartoons on the walls.
More importantly, the managers are really impressive. I had booked a room using Southwest Airlines points and had to reschedule my stay. SWA refused to credit my points and said they were non-​refundable. The day manager at the Citizen, however, worked with SWA to reset my stay and the hotel honored my points. I’m very grateful that Marriott trusts its employees to solve their patrons’ concerns.
I can’t wait to stay there again.

Stayed here for the night before Mother’s Day to treat my wife for a night in downtown and try a hotel we’ve never visited before. Overall style of the outside of the Citizen Hotel is kind of old traditional but lovely as well. Doors were opened for us immediately by the valet team and though the ambience of the hotel is stylish if also seemed a tad dark. Perhaps they’re going for a Gothic art Deco feel of the olden 30’s NYC hotels. At the desk check in was prompt, proper, and courteous. Given the option of 2 rooms one smaller room on the 12^th floor and a bigger room on the 2^nd. My wife chose the 2^nd floor room and so we got a corner view overlooking Cesar Chavez Park. Our roomy was quaint though can’t imagine how much smaller the 12^th floor room would’ve been. Bathroom was clean and nicely fashioned. Loved the political theme throughout the room and hotel itself. Wonderful to have so many towels and two bathrobes for us to unwind in. The downfall is that the nightclub across the street partied til 2am (hotel did warn us so we had to learn the hard way) and sadly neither my wife nor I were able to find a comfy spot on the bed. It seemed a bit old and uncomfortable. Also surprised so many dogs were «guests» coming in and out of the hotel. I love my dog, but she’d have to stay home. Overall the Citizen will only be garnering 3 stars at this time.

Easy location, Valet Only Parking $ 28/​a day, Pet Friendly.

I’ve stayed here before while the Citizen was still an independent Joie de Vivre property and, because I had enjoyed my previous stay, decided to stay here again. The hotel is now a Marriott property, and unfortunately, my most recent stay did not live up to expectations.
Soon after checking into the room, I discovered that there was only hot water in the sink and shower. Scalding hot water. After nearly burning my hands washing them after using the bathroom, I called down and asked that someone come fix it. Engineering came but wasn’t able to fix it right away and said someone would return later. I took off for the night and just asked them to let themselves in.
When I returned to the room for the night, I checked with the front desk to see if they issue had been corrected. They assured me that it had, so I went up. The problem, however, persisted. I called back down, but the front desk stated that nothing could be done because of how late it was. So there I was in the middle of the night, unable to take a shower or wash up. I asked that a manager call me in the morning, but no one made any effort to try to fix the problem or contact me, and I left in the morning.
I will not be returning and advise travelers considering the hotel to be aware that the large majority of favorable reviews were earned by the hotel while it was under different management.

Worst service I have ever had I was really excited to try this place, won’t even give it a second. Really wanted to upgrade and enjoy the place but after spending 5 min with the stuck up bar staff we moved on.

My old review is below this is my new review, I do love this hotel it’s a very nice place to stay if it’s in your price range go for it, the suites are well worth the Extra money. They defiantly made up for my poor stay last time. They generally always have good service. And if your a room service ordered they always come quick and food is very good.
Usually love this hotel but after paying 600 $ for the pent house and our toilet wouldn’t flush right after we checked in, I called the front desk and l let them know thinking they would send someone to look at it but instead the women at the front desk responded «I’ll make note of it» While checking out I made a comment about it, and still no discount, nothing! How absurd I didn’t have a toilet for my stay. For the money you spend at this hotel it’s not that much nicer than a Marriott for how much more your spending. Im beyond offended by this hotel and will never stay here again after being treated this way.

This is an interesting hotel. I booked it out of sheer curiosity. It is located in a convenient part of town. There are dinner options nearby. The Citizen is certainly a retro style hotel. It reminded me of hotels in Europe. The lobby is dark, but has cool décor.
The room was small, but also shared the cool décor seen in the lobby. The bathroom was large and had a cool large shower. I did have a nice view of the park too.
There is a restaurant attached to the hotel if you are not feeling ambitious. Overall this is a good hotel. The price was not too bad for a unique property.

We stayed here only for one night but it was such a lovely stay, room was very comfortable, spacious and its decoration made it very unique. Very friendly staff, fast check-​in and valet parking. Location is very good too, we’ll definitely stay here again.

The décor and location was eclipsed by the fact that we paid for a hotel to SLEEP in. However, management went silent when a wedding reception kept guests up until we literally called five times to ask someone to intervene.
I’m all about the party, but when guest can’t sleep or get traction and support from management, that’s when a line is drawn. The noise is so loud I can officially state:
–the groom’s name
–the bride’s name
–their PARENT’S name
–every song they play from the 90s
–banal chatter from guest
–the name of woman who caught the bouquet
I have a massive presentation in the morning and I’m currently listening to Usher rap about girls «all up on him.» I just can’t even deal.
If you want a Gatsby-​esque lobby, this is your place.
If you want good management and sleep, go somewhere else.

Booked a staycation for valentine’s weekend weeks ahead of time and hit one little snag. Booked reservations at the on-​site restaurant and they had a predetermined menu for valentine’s day that didn’t agree with my wife or I and wasn’t made aware until a week before my stay. Brentwood the hotel manager made every effort to make an accommodation for us and although we selected a different restaurant he made our stay great. Many times things don’t go as planned and companies take the stance of not our problem or sorry but there’s nothing we can do. Brent made serious effort to make his customer happy and surprised me with some champagne and truffles in my room valentine’s night. Many thanks Brent I really appreciate your level of commitment to your customers. I’ll be sure to recommend The Citizen to my friends.

Beautiful hotel, lovely corner room on the 6^th floor, a real treat for us and the kids. We were warned room might be noisy due to busy streets below, but were undaunted since we live on a busy street anyway. Loved nighttime views of the park and streets, and interesting early morning views of the same.
We figured out that the City Hall parking garage is super close by and saved $ 20 by parking our car there ourselves rather than use the valet service. Can’t believe how cheap parking is in Sacramento on the weekend, but then again, all of the offices are empty so perhaps demand is low.
Would stay here again in a heartbeat! Beautiful lobby and room, interesting elevators, and perfect location to access all of Sacramento.

We came to Sacramento for the weekend from SF to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and go to the Kings/​Warriors game.
I chose the Citizen based on positive reviews and the boutique feel of the décor (I’m not a fan of chain hotels). The location was also good because it’s close to the Arena and sites in Old Sacramento.
We had a great stay here! The room was on the 6^th floor with a nice view of the park across the street. Bedding/​pillows were really comfortable and the bathroom was nicely done with soft towels and high quality products (Lather brand soap). We got valet parking and wifi with our room which was great!
What I really loved about the Citizen was the service. We were able to check-​in early without any issues, the valet system was great, and one of the valet guys even gave us a nice running route to go on in the morning.
I mentioned it was my boyfriend’s birthday and they really made it special by bringing up some champagne and fancy nuts – totally unexpected but such a nice surprise. They also called and gave us a very sweet welcome message to make sure everything was okay with our room. Love those little details! They also have Keurig machines and coffee/​tea in the room which is great!
Two things for improvement: there isn’t lotion provided (only body bar, shampoo, and conditioner). There also wasn’t a drawer to unpack clothes except for the nightstand.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Citizen and I can’t wait to stay there again the next time we’re in Sacramento.

We spent the night and I had made it known full well to the staff that this was a surprise for my wife. The morning of our departure my wife screamed at me for spending so much money on such a blasé establishment with a view of the local liquor store. I was shocked and asked how she knew the cost. To my chagrin, she had discovered our receipt had been slipped under the door. I have never experienced this level of rudeness from a hotel. The management practically just demanded their money and kicked us to the curb!
I would give the Citizen 1 star if not for the hard working valets and bell hops.

It’s been 4 days since our stay at the Citizen and 1 day since my negative review. Today a $ 360 hold was placed on my credit card dated Jan 4^th by the Citizen.

This is a classic downtown hotel with lots of charm and unique features. This is not your standard chain hotel.
I felt like we walked through a time portal when we entered the lobby. A long entry way with marble throughout, large ferns in pots and high backed chairs led us back through an archway to the reception desk flanked by cozy nooks filled with comfortable chairs, game tables and books.
Our room on the 12^th floor was delightful. A bit small by modern standards, but that is not a complaint. It was comfortable, clean and beautifully appointed with all the modern amenities — flatscreen TV, lots of convenient electrical outlets, wifi, in room coffee maker, and indoor plumbing. The bed was very comfortable. The high end toiletries and robes were an extra nice touch.
Staff were very accommodating. The valet and front doormen were very cordial. All the staff seemed to want to make it their personal mission to make our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
The location is convenient to everything downtown and is walking distance to Oldtown.
Highly recommended for something a bit different. We will most definitely plan a return stay.

Decent stay at this hotel, I was told all the NBA players stay here when they play the Kings so that was cool. They have a decent room service menu but it’s not all night.
If you walk two blocks you can go to pizza rock and have a slice or pasta with load music in the background. Cool place!
Room was clean, bed was comfortable and the restroom was the very nice. The rooms are fairly small so don’t expect a big room. The restroom is almost the size of the room. It’s a big restroom.
We stayed on the 12^th floor room 1203 the view are nothing special even being that high up.

Cute grand dame hotel in downtown Sacramento. While part of Marriotts autograph collection it is a great option of the very vanilla hyatt and Sheraton options around the state Capitol. It’s got tons of charm and lovely old political cartoon art on the walls from the 50s, 60s and 70s. (I guess I am a geek). The attached grange restaurant is also known as a hip bar scene (a friend tells me). I had a great breakfast there.
As a premium Marriott member I got upgraded to a one room suite. It was very charming and nicely appointed. The bath was huge and the bed was quite comfy. The building isn’t huge and it’s in a colorful part of town. Sacramento isn’t that big or sketchy but it’s not a sterile southern cal or affluent setting. Urban at its best! Valet parking is cheap and your best option if you drive.
The gym is *ahem* underwhelming. Very tiny and just barely equipped. But it gets the job done. I will certainly stay here again as this town really has few choices of truly nice hotels. This is a jewel if you «have» to schlep to Sacramento.

We stayed overnight at The Citizen and were impressed at every turn… from the beautiful boutique décor, the exemplary service and delicious food.
The bed and pillows were so comfortable I had to call them after our stay to find out which mattress and pillows they use.
We had room service for our dinner, dessert and breakfast. It was all sublime. I wish I knew how to post pictures within my review, since I don’t I will post them separately.
I can’t wait to return.

This place is seriously less than mediocre. It does have a really nice aesthetic appeal but that’s about it. I stayed here because I was in town for the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival.
Firstly, what kind of hotel doesn’t give you a couple of bottles of water in your room?! Coming back to the room after rocking out in a field in the middle of nowhere is pretty dehydrating. Room service doesn’t serve past 11, so I couldn’t order food and some water and was too tired to go out. So we got two mini bottles from guest services.
When we woke up, hungover and beat from the festival we tried ordering room service. I’ve NEVER been to a hotel where they don’t have enough staff to cover the phone when a guest orders food?! I kept calling and getting their voice mail, so I decided to call the front desk and they advised me to leave my order on the voicemail. So that’s exactly what I did, left the order and my room number. HALF AN HOUR LATER… I get a call back from a woman who asks for the entire order again and then when it’s delivered, it’s WRONG. Completely pathetic on staff and management.
Are you that cheap that you can’t staff the hotel properly? AND THE FOOD WAS COLD! The fruit that came with our dish looked like it was a month old! This hotel sucks.
If you’re in the area avoid this place entirely. Just stay at the Hyatt. Or Motel 6. Either way, it’s better than here.
I pity the Unilocalers below who think this place is worth more than 2 stars, they haven’t experienced a truly nice hotel.

I spent one night here after a fundraiser. The room was cozy but beautiful, and the bed was better than my own! :) Needless to say, I had a good night’s sleep.
The walls were thin enough that I could hear some rowdier people on their way out on a Wednesday evening, but by the time bedtime rolled around it was peacefully quiet.
The Citizen is located in a lovely old building in downtown Sacramento that used to be an office building for non profits and other businesses (and before that it may have been something else). So there’s a lot of historic charm, and I imagine that the rooms don’t all look the same.
Their special events rooms are pretty nice as well… the terrace room which was added to the original building has an amazing view of the Capitol.
During my short stay, service was excellent… not surprising given my experiences here during other events.
The Grange is conveniently attached for good eats and drinks, and if that’s out of your price range because you splurged for a nice room at the Citizen, you’re in luck! Downtown Sac has plenty of other great food options nearby, just Unilocal it :)

Upon check in we inquired about a roll out bed (we originally asked for one during the reservation process). We were promptly told «no we don’t do that» ok fine. We were on our way out to meet friends for dinner. We returned from dinner around 11pm to the pleasure of listening to the drunk wedding crowd sing eighties songs until 1am which was backed up with another wedding party group of singers the following night until after midnight. Just not a place I would stay again when traveling.
Valets rude and room service mediocre

So disappointed… We got the penthouse suite (Mayor’s suite) for the night of my 30^th birthday. We asked repeatedly for an early check in, we arrived at 2:30, regular check in is at 3pm. We were told our room was not ready and wouldn’t be until 3. Ok, we’ll take our 2 year old into the bar and get some food like they suggested. We get there and sit down and were told they don’t serve food until 3. Great, cranky 2 year old sitting for 30 minutes with no food. The front desk person comes in at 3:20 and says our room is ready.
We get up to the room and its 80 degrees. I turned on the AC and it would not click on. My husband called down and finally got kind of obscure directions that were not written anywhere in the room and we never would’ve figured out. We had to get ready for our party in a room that was 80 degrees. There were stains all over the carpet.
We found out later that the balcony (the ONLY selling point) was shared, but we were assured there was a 6ft tall planter box separating the spaces. There was 1 planter box that was 3ft wide and maybe 3ft tall.
After working in hospitality I know that procedure would be to have a complimentary bottle of wine or a note or anything since they knew it was my birthday, nothing.
After the party we wanted to order some snacks and had to call 4 times before someone actually answered to take our order, which they got wrong.
The bellmen were nice and the female server in the restaurant was nice. Only good points.
For all this we paid $ 700/​night. What a joke.

Really nice hotel! Love the style of the place. Very well appointed with modern amenities, but still on keeping with the Era. We had a great view from the tiny 13^th floor windows in our room. The pictures posted here are a good example. I would stay here again if I came back to Sacremento. Great staff and service.
We enjoyed dinner at The Firehouse Restaurant (about 15 minute walk) and coffee at Temple Coffee and Tea. Definitely recommend both as well.

BEAUITFUL hotel! Stayed here one night as we had my birthday party (it was a BIG milestone) in the Scandal Bar.
I wanted something a little swanky/​city feel, as we used to live in SF and I desperately miss it there. I also wanted something kid friendly, as we didn’t want our kids to miss out on the fun. The Scandal Bar was perfect. Because it was a private party, we were allowed to have children present. The bartender was attentive and the staff passing the hors d’œuvre were good. The person I booked the party through was great! I’ll definitely plan another party here in the future and I certainly recommend booking one, especially if you would like it to be kid friendly. Keep in mind timeframes are not into the wee hours of the night. They want to control the noise for the guests… which is something I appreciate since we stayed there.
As for our room, I think we got an upgrade because we booked the party. It was an L shape room and nice. The «window» wasn’t a window. There was just a curtain there. I found it humorous. I loved the tile in the bathroom and the «old school» shower/​tub combo. It did take some figuring on how to turn the shower on. I don’t remember how, so, ask before you check in!
It’s not the nicest hotel I’ve stayed in, but I gave it 5 starts because of my overall experience.

I stayed here for a week for work. Good location– 3 blocks to the Capitol Bldg. Check-​in was fast, room wasn’t ready at noon when we arrived so they offered to text us when key was ready for pickup.
No pool and gym has no windows and very stuffy. They give free access to the California Fitness Gym — which is a good 2 minute walk from the hotel.
Valet service was spotty. Good on a clear day but one morning it rained and it took 45 minutes to get our car. Manager was apologetic and credited us one day valet parking fee ($ 18/​night).
Starbucks is a 5 minute walk.
I was charged in error for mini bar charges. I didn’t even touch it and I was wrongly charged. I asked about it and front desk was apologetic «sorry it’s the wrong room» and corrected their mistake but what a hassle when you’re rushing out on the last day of stay and get a wrong bill.
I liked the Lather amenities. Free wifi only in the lobby. Dog friendly hotel. Convenience store and liquor store just behind the hotel.

I was in town for the film festival for a night and couldn’t believe my luck that I scored a gorgeous room on the 14^th floor. The bathroom was about as big as the bedroom, and I had a beautiful view of the cathedral. The room was clean, the bed was cozy, and the décor was so chic — no wonder people get portraits taken here!
Check-​in and check-​out was a breeze. Everyone was so friendly at the desk, and when my room wasn’t quite ready, I was given a drink ticket for complimentary wine or beer at the Grange bar. You guys are speaking my language.
A few caveats. There is a special elevator to get to the 13^th and 14^th floors, which was broken for my entire stay, so to get to my room, I had to get off at the 12^th floor and walk to rest of the way. Not ideal, but hopefully it will be fixed soon. The other is that the entire hotel shuts down at 11PM. No room service, no bar, and it’s the start of the imposed «quiet hours.» I’d been hoping for a late dinner in my room, but that wasn’t happening.
If I ever find myself in Sactown again, I’d definitely consider staying here.

As a wedding photographer I love taking photos at Citizen hotel. I also believe Citizen Hotel is one of the most popular hotel in Sacramento area for weddings getting ready photos. Rooms are fairly well lit and premium suite upstairs is very well lit with natural light. Amazing thing about those premium suite is that it has access to the balcony that overlooks Sacramento downtown. So that balcony images are stunning, they are like cherry on a cake:)
Hotel also has few more pretty unique places to take photos both in lobby and outside.

When I called the Citizen Hotel to ask if my 6-​month-​old pup Sasha could tag along, the associate replied that they «prefer dogs to people!» Well okay then — let’s do this!
Upon check-​in, Sasha was greeted with some treats and lots of love. Made it up to our room and the first thing I noticed was the spaciousness… this room rivaled the size of my studio, somewhere around 600+ sf! It came with a separate sitting area with sofa and the bathroom was quite large. Perfect for throwing down Sasha’s water and food bowls!
I ordered room service on two occasions — some cold water and a beer when I first arrived, and breakfast the following day. Both orders arrived quickly and my eggs were cooked to my liking. But most importantly, my bed was not only a king but fit-​for-​a-​king: I comfortably snoozed away for almost 9 hours and that’s quite a feat for me.
The only thing which detracted from what would have been a 5-​star rating was the random noise disturbance around 1:30am. My dog and I woke up to what sounded like jack-​hammering in the bathroom or the room above us! It lasted for about 30 seconds and initially I thought it was an earthquake… so bizarre! My colleagues mentioned similarly strange yet completely different noise disturbances, and it is rumored that this property is haunted. But would that derail me from staying here again? Nah.
