I rented a house for several years in East Sacramento through the Real Estate Management Center. The people that work at the company are nice but it is really the owner that is calling all of the shots and regardless of how poor the decisions are the company stays with the owner.
For instance: We had literally a trickle of water in the downstairs bathroom and just slightly more in the rest of the 1^st floor for just under a year and NOTHING was done about it except waist my time. The company sent someone over to take a look and they said the pipes needed to be replaced. The owner didn’t like that answer so he came over with his own guy that basically said the same thing. After now taking 2 days off work they never showed up to fix the issue. about 6 months later i escalated the issue again as it was getting even worse and once again the owner and a plumber came over had the same assessment and they still didn’t fix it.
There were many instanced like this which made life in the house horrible.
We were paying $ 2,160/month rent through what is essentially a slum lord company managing at least one house in East Sacramento.
I actually liked renting as opposed to owning, since I may of had to move for work, but after this experience we decided it was time to buy and bought a house 671 feet away.
When we moved not only did we not get our deposit back but the company went completely silent and ignored the issue despite letters I sent and calls. I understand that many companies and owners don’t give deposits back but to completely ignore the issue is actually illegal. Hypothetically if I had no deposit entitled to me due to cleaning and/​or work by law the company needs to at least inform you what the charges were and may in fact go after the renter for additional costs. In this case NOTHING happened. No deposit returned, no communication regarding the deposit, no bill NOTHING. Our deposit was $ 1,960 which isn’t cheap but more than the money i found the lack of communication completely disrespectful and offensive.
I could have taken them to small claims court as after 3 weeks, or in this case months, without communication I believe that they would not be able to withhold any deposit. I am not sure on that but I believe so. The reason I haven’t taken them to court is that I am so livid and offended and don’t want to bring those feeling back to the forefront if possible.
I do find it irritating that the owners didn’t sell and now I have a slum lord property in the middle of east Sacramento on 36^th Street 5 blocks McKinley park and 671 feet from my house.
If you do rent from this company just understand that nothing will ever get fixed and that your deposit will be gone unless you take the time off of work to go to court. Oh, and make sure to hang on to your documentation as they will randomly add costs for sewer/​water, twice in my case for the same thing.
