History

Established in 2006.

Movies on a Big Screen is a microcinema/​ongoing film fest that started in Sept 2006, is primarily volunteer-​based and has a weekly film screening series of independent films and documentaries.

We have shown first run films, premieres and sneak previews of things that would have not made it to Sacramento. We also run older, foreign or more obscure films and on occasion host late-​night audience participation events. We do digital projection onto a large screen (not a big screen TV).

Many screenings have had filmmakers and guest speakers in attendance for Q&A.

I can’t believe I didn’t know about this place sooner! We went and saw the 1923 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Lon Chaney. I love the fact that they had free water and their refreshments were very reasonably priced. The version they showed was the most complete version, and though it wasn’t perfect, well, what do you expect for a movie of that age. It was lovely and the host was very educated. I can’t wait to come here again…$ 5 to get in, and their own spacious parking lot.

We are so lucky that MOBS is in our neighborhood every Sunday. Five dollars for very well-​chosen films. The filmmakers attend for question and answer quite frequently. We attend over half of the Sundays. this is a true five-star…definitely ‘as good as it gets’. The Guild is also a great venue!

This is the most amazing Sacramento event, for price and product. Go see a movie, for $ 5 and often meet the actors and/​or director and buy their swag. You can buy delicious snacks for $ 1 – 2 or have food and drink at Old Soul, which is next door. I can not begin to tell you the movies i have seen here (from «Heavy Metal Parking Lot» to to «My Heart is an Idiot») all indie and many documentaries. Amazing. I wish my son would intern here…

Movie nerds rejoice! This film series (hosted at The Guild in Oak Park) is pretty much the best thing ever — from Z-​grade camp to classic film noir to documentaries to whatever they want that looks cool (and it usually is…). And it’s FIVE BUCKS. Go and get some cheap cultural capital — support this film series, please, cause it’s awesome.
(Also, any theater that sells a regular-​size big pack of Newman-O’s as a concession earns a zillion brownie points.)

I’m sad the Cabinet and Fools Foundation are no more, but it’s great to have MOBS!
You really have to love this place: the tickets (and candy) are cheap, the theatre is beautiful, the crowd/​staff/​organizers are wonderful, and the films never disappoint.

Rocky Horror was amazing! Franknfurter stole the show, but Brad, Janet, Rocky, Riff Raff, Magenta, and the chick who sang Science Fiction Double Feature at the beginning and close and was prominently featured in the show were GREAT! Small venue, intimate setting, we could see the actors/​daners nuanced expressions in the second row. (If I was in the first row, Frankenfurter might have sat inmy lap during the solilique, which happened to the hapless fan in front of me). SEE THE SHOW!!! The house was not full for the seven o’clock, which was a shame, because the show was so awesome. Get ticks today to see the show tonight! General seating, so get there early if you want to sit up front-​tickets onlly $ 25, box office opens an hour before the show, doors a half hour before the show (u can wait inside out of the weather). Backscreen narator from the movie. The girls are hot in their fishnet stockings and so is Frankn’furter, if u go in for that sort of thing. Great vocalists, dancers and actors! Even if u never were a fan of the movie, GO AND SEE IT!!!

This place is amazing! Comfy seats and an environment that from the get-​go makes you want to get to know the other people there. Parking was available right in front of the theater and they showed old-​school cartoons before the movie.
We went for their Crappy Christmas event, when they were showing Santa v. Satan. As unabashedly advertised, the movie was absolutely terrible, but laughably so. Before the movie they had a bit of a comedy hour and gave away crappy Christmas gifts to audience members (we walked away with a smelly foot spray! Just what I’ve always wanted!).
I’m definitely coming back, and I wished they had more than just one movie a week!

If I didn’t work most every Sunday night I would be here instead… Five dollars is a great deal for great films you will probably not find elsewhere and especially not in Sacramento. I am really grateful I found it.

Five dollars for unique, thought-​provoking cinema put on by locals that genuinely are dedicated to bringing something different to Sacramento, or ten dollars on mass-​produced crap at an overpriced soul draining corporate chain?

I’ve been to quite a few of their shows, sometimes because the movie interests me and other times to put in my five bucks to help ensure that they are able to stick around. Every time I am entertained and kick myself for not going more often!
Highlights have been «I Think We’re Alone Now» and «Suspiria». The curators have a great sensibility for off the radar movies that are very entertaining and always worth the time and money. Having directors and other participants at the shows is a huge bonus as well.
Broaden your horizons –go to MOBS!

Love Movies on the Big Screen! I have been to three of their movies. If you are sick of the same old movies with the same old story lines in the theaters and want some that are different or interesting highly recommend checking these guys out. It’s amazingly cheap (usually $ 5) and the people that run it are friendly! If they are at a location that isn’t a theater I recommend bringing a pillow for your tush.

This means that I will, for sure, be finally getting my ass to one of the fine films they show.
It also means that for the same price you paid to sit in the uncomfortable union hall, you’ll now be able to sit in a cushy, beautiful theater.

Every film I’ve seen here was worth every last cent of my five dollar bill. Even if it doesn’t sound like something I am remotely interested in, I’ve always come away enlightened or at least entertained.
Friday’s I usually want to curl up on the couch and watch a movie, but every couple of weeks I curl up on a MOB couch instead. Last week they had the documentary «I Think We’re Alone Now» about two stalkers obsessed with 80’s pop star Tiffany. And one of the stalkers was there to answer questions. It was so cool. Best five bucks I’ve ever spent.

I always wanted to see RHPS in a theater, and thought that I would have to go to Oakland to do it. I never went to the midnight shows that they had in the sunrise theater (RIP, its now a best buy), so when I read about them running the show here, I put up a myspace ad to get a few friends to go, and we proceeded down there.
My initial reaction was that this was a very nondescript building and I wasn’t sure if it was the right place. Once we all arrived we went in and met some interesting folks, and proceeded in. Once you walk in, the open area where the chairs have been setup remind you of a place where a 12 step meeting might take place. True to any time there were RHPC «virgins» in the audience, we had a little audience participation (if you want to know what I did, I’ll tell you privately hehe) and we saw the show. I had a great time and to keep up on what they are playing, I added them as a friend on myspace, they will put up a bulletin with the weeks offerings.

You know what? My husband (a Rocky Horror kinda guy) and I (a Rocky virgin at the time) went to see a showing of Rocky Horror and I’ll admit… at first we sat in the car for a few minutes because while I can hang with pretty much anyone, I’m always concerned they can’t hang with me. Given that this WAS in West Sac and the dude standing by the door was wearing some sort of costume that still to this day I’m not sure what it was, but it was some sort of furry creature type thing — we were a bit hesitant to go in. Finally after a 5 minute pep talk, we proceeded and I’m so glad we did.
It was very cozy and just all around fun! So much I definitely want to go back and take friends. Good times!

I cannot believe that more people aren’t going to these movies… Shiny Objects brings interesting, thought provoking (75% of the time), funny, meaningful independent movies to an old Union Hall in west Sacramento (which is a short, enjoyable bike ride from the Midtown/​DT area) for $ 5.00. FIVE DOLLARS. I went to college in Los Angeles, and have forked over $ 15 to $ 20 dollars to see some highly publicized crap made by students, under the guise of art.
Lurch and Deann, who run Shiny Objects Digital Video are really nice and friendly, and are always able to start up a pre-​movie chat with the crowd. Speaking of the crowd… it is always a different group of people, depending on the movie’s theme or content. What I really like is how diverse the movies are, how there is an emphasis on free speech and keeping independent art in Sacramento.
I think that this venue will only be around a short while in its current form… take advantage of it now, while you can! Much MUCH MUCH better than anything you will see a the Natomas 16, and you are supporting creative thinking people.

YAY Movies on a Big Screen.
These days «independent movies» seems to mean movies that cost under 10 million dollars and are made by the independent imprint of some big studio.

Of course, I’m biased. You hosted the rough cut screening of my own no budget masterpiece. Thanks so much. It was a great experience and really helpful to us in the editing process.
I came to the Rock that Uke screening as well and again, a great time was had. Yeah, I should try to make it out more. And try I shall.
