Kris was raised out side of Chicago in Naperville, Il. She graduated with a BA and teaching certificate from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wi. Kris decided to move to the Sacramento region in 1975 because she loved the area and wanted to experience snow by choice. She has lived in the Natomas neighborhood of Sacramento since 1985 with her husband Bill Son.
