Hacker Lab

Hacker Lab is Sacramento Community Maker Space, where members can learn about a variety of disciplines in Engineering Technology such as 3D printing, electronics technology, cross platform software and app development, virtual reality, laser cutting and automated woodworking.
Hacker Lab is a great location for startup companies, because office spaces are available for companies that are working hard to launch a product and/​or service.
Many classes are offered to members who want to enhance technical skills, or learn new ones. There are also some amazing events and competitions hosted at Hacker Lab sponsored by companies such as Intel, VSP, Marrone Bio Innovations, and others –available to the community all for the sake of expanding skills, knowledge, and empowering the community.
Sacramento is so very lucky to have such a great resource readily available.

Was just told that my three free days of co-​working space coupon on my Unilocal was «old.» Even if that was the case maybe offer me a few hours of free time rather than the $ 15 per day charge? Seems like a good space but just poor customer service.

I love all the creative projects and people I run into. Best place to see anyone you might know from anywhere.
I would have been hanging out here more sooner if I had known from the start about more than just the tech aspects of the space.
It is great to experience the hustle and bustle 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

The Hacker Lab is a great place to spread your creativity and participate in a think-​tank atmosphere. The monthly membership is reasonably priced, and you’re able to get some feedback and suggestions from like-​minds.
The Hacker Lab is located in a good area of midtown and has a small parking lot but lots of near street parking.

Seems like a great place specifically for the «young crowd». After a recent failed interview I realized this when one of the Owners I saw on Youtube videos didn’t even acknowledge me as I spoke on the way out! Or maybe it was my skin tone, who knows. Chalk it up to experience

I’ve waited to write this review because this place is pretty cool and it’s gonna take a lot to describe it. I’ll try, but I have a feeling I’ll be updating this soon.
For anyone who is creative, Hacker Lab is nirvana. They have a wood shop, a laser cutter, a 3d printer, a textile lab/​area, an electronics area and free tea/​coffee for residents.
My all inclusive residence costs 99 a month!!! It allows me my full run of the place.
Mainly what I use it for is a coworking place. I work at home.
Have you ever tried working at home when you have a family?
Well let me tell ya, it’s DISTRACTING AS ALL HELL. My wife is constantly fighting for my attention and when she’s not it’s my kids.

I have ²⁴⁄₇ access via a card key. Now given the location, you’d think this is a security nightmare. Pero, who nicely toured me through Hacker Lab explained they have yet to have one criminal incident.
I hope I didn’t jinx them. Heh. Besides that, it is monitored closely. Since people all around me are creating, intellectual property is an important thing.
Anyway there’s always a desk, plenty of plugs and SUPER FAST INTERNET. Not to mention a great diverse group of people to talk to/​bounce ideas off of/​find people to work/​find work.
If you are into any of that, then what the hell are you waiting for? JOIN THE COLLECTIVE. BECOME ONE WITH THE BORG. YOU SHALL BE ASSIMILATED.
Ugh. I’m such a nerd. You don’t have to be a nerd to like Hacker Lab, although it definitely doesn’t hurt.
The only snafu I can think of is parking. If you come before 6pm on a weekday you know it’s gonna be crazy don’t you?
Well I was not so pleasantly reminded why I live in the suburbs my first time looking for parking. They have a few spots but don’t expect those to be open on busy hours.
I wish transit was better in Sacramento but that’s not their fault either.

I needed a space that was not a coffee shop so I could meet with an intern weekly. I met some good people at Hacker Lab and got what I needed for space, professionalism, and a quiet but collaborative space to work. It was affordable for my needs with plenty of options should I need them (conference rooms, kitchen, some equipment, etc. and pretty good selection of music if you wanted). The classes weren’t really for my needs, but I thought they looked pretty interesting, and I think the work they do in the community is pretty exceptional and fun. They are a respectable place.
The only reason why I give this place four stars is because on several occasions the co-​owner was not very approachable and she would just look at me like I was bothering her or that I didn’t fit in when I had some questions, which put me a little at unease — something that I didn’t feel with the gentleman that work there. Perhaps its just a female thing. It shouldn’t change your mind you from coming here though.
Parking in the area is not really an issue with metered parking and occasionally you can get a spot in their small parking lot.
Overall, I’d come here again if I needed the space.

Meeting space — meetup, etc.

My buddy N’Shawn over at Thinkhouse invited me to a meet n greet pizza and beer presentation about HTML stuff last week. It was actually pretty informative… if you have a long enough attention span. The dude talked and talked and talked for at least an hour and a half. I probably went through 3 – 4 beers. I give them props though for quality beer and pizza. No Little Ceasar’s or Coor’s Light, so I was impressed.
I even found the greatest gift idea… an origami sculpture made out of tape!!!

Build it and they will come…
Where else can anyone and everyone come together to figure out the next great thing or tweek the almost next great thing? Where beverages flow, snacks prevail and the sound of clicking keyboards become ideas in motion.
Even if you have no idea how to turn on a computer (not sure how you made it here to Unilocal then), it’s a place to check out.
Only suggestion — let me drop my kids off there for a week long camp… I promise to bring juice boxes and chips galore!!!

Love the concept. They recently celebrated their one year anniversary. They are community focused and offer their ample space for events. I attended a WordPress meetup here and I was very informative and I will definately be returning.

I went here for a Unilocal event and I thought it was a really cool place. They had a demo about how someone had a computer program set up to this machine to create cute little figures. They also have a huge workshop in the back and they place really seems to encourage people to channel their inner programmers. If I was a programmer I would be at this place all the time. If they had cool or fun classes that I could sign up for and try some of the stuff I would do that too.

I was lucky enough to attend the Unilocal Elite event hosted at Hacker Lab and I’m glad I attended because otherwise I would have never known about Hacker Lab. It’s a really cool warehouse space for anyone to work.
The standard membership is $ 99 a month, and it’s only $ 45 for students. This seems pretty fair because you get 24 access, wifi, conference/​meeting room access, and coffee/​tea/​water. It just seems cool to have a workplace to go to, if you need one. Plus, it’s clean too. If you don’t plan on using the space that often, they also have some cheaper options available.
They have their own parking lot, but street parking seems to be pretty easy otherwise (at least when I visited in the evening.)

This place is like Nirvana for us geeks (and geek wanna-​bes!)
The space is so comfortable — couches and other comfy seating abound… and an impressive library of techie references! Every time I’d think of a topic and wonder if they had a book on it, PRESTO, I’d easily locate it. I wish this place had been around when I was in college! The location is great, parking was easy and I love their goal to assist small start-​ups… what a great grass-​roots effort! Super cool place! The opportunity to share information and get educated is seemingly endless! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for this type of assistance, even if you don’t know that you are looking for it!

I’ve been hearing about Hacker Labs from the Meetup app and my friends, and all I have heard was great things. This is definitely a place Sacramento can be proud of. There isn’t a place like this that is so involved with its customers and community. COming into this place, I did not know what to expect. It was like a giant playground for me. I really enjoy the fact that they have so much room for your start ups. I’m looking forward to coming here more often.

SITREP
This is the motto of the Hacker Lab in Sacramento. As it were, only a few blocks away from where I live. Their mission is a simple one: they «aim to educate folks and seed start-​ups with community driven resources.»
SETUP
It is a wonderful warehouse style venue space. I have memories of this physical lay-​out when it USED to be Sub-​Q tattoo parlor. My friend and fellow Unilocaler Rich K. also used to sub-​let a space from Sub-​Q for his music business Zoundhaus, for guitar instruction. However, when Sub-​Q lost their lease, Rich had to move as well, which was a shame, because this was prime location in Midtown.
So of course I was waiting with baited breath to see what would show up here.
ENTER HACKER LAB
So since I’ve been back to this «location» as it is now Hacker Lab, it is a treat to see how the set-​up had changed since those previous Sub-​Q & Zoundhaus days.
This past Saturday Night I got to meet the leader of our local Hacker Lab, Eric, and he explained how Hacker Lab was desiged to be a workspace for BOTH students & professionals in this software & hardware space.
As far as instruction and business principles, their instruction includes design & business development, educational courses for all ages and also promotes a «Community Mentorship» for those individuals who are running with a great idea for software or hardware or gaming and seeking to develop a startup-​plan.
THE LOWDOWN
Hacker Lab is a great place people to come and give their idea the potential to become a business.
Networking and Industry Events

The Hacker Lab is in a great downtown location. It is a warehouse size, multi-​roomed building that offers the budding business person a chance to rent an office space of their own. Rooms vary in size for that private office, to meetings or class rooms, to a large, spacious work shop. All in one place, to help the entrepreneur and creative minded alike. Even machinery, hardware and techno equipment are available on the premises and still expanding. The members of the Hacker Lab were very nice in educating us about their facilities during our Elite Unilocal event, in which they graciously allowed us to invade and snoop.
This facility has so much going for it, that I see it doing well. Membership and rental fees vary, but quite reasonable. And they are accessible 24 hours a day. If anyone is looking for an office space, start their own business, or pursue artistic endeavors, forget about wasting that spare bedroom, attic or garage, this is the place to check out!

So we attended our first Unilocal event at Hacker Lab and the place is cool. There is tons of space available, large rooms, small rooms a conferernce room, audio/​visual gear pretty much anything you can think of they have available for rent! Even though the location is midtown they have their own parking lot and a huge building to accomodate your every need or business function.

Hacker Lab is a creative geek space. There are rooms available for meetings and computer stuff. There’s a library of tech books. When I was there for a fun and fabulous Unilocal event, there was an Atari set up and we gotto play old school games, including Pong. There was a guy there doing 3-​D printing. Another guy was working on making a computer game. There was a huge space in the back with all kinds of tech machinary that I totally didn’t understand.
There are classes and events. The website has an events calendar.

This is an incredibly cool «tech-​hacking, company-​building, knowledge sharing space,» as they describe it. What does that mean? It’s a place where entrepreneurs, mainly of the technical variety, can rent office space and pursue their first million. They boast thirteen private and semi-​private offices, open collaborative space, private meeting rooms, and a large conference room. It’s actually a huge building. What I like the most is that it’s an affordable way to get yourself an office and out of the house while looking professional, even if you may not feel like it.
Owner Gina is as cool as they come and always welcome to show you around the «campus.» If just the thought of a private office doesn’t tickle your fancy, read the following tech porn. Their «Hardware Fabrication Zone» in the back features «over 3,000 sf dedicated space for hardware fabrication and prototyping with equipment such as: drill press, soldering station mill, grinder, band saw, metal bending unit, oxyacetylene welding station, full electronics lab (dc power, signal, multi meter. Oscilloscope, computer), circuit prototyping board, and more! In the coming months our toolbox will grow to include items such as: CNC, lathe, and a 3D printer.»
