The Texas State Railroad is the «Official Railroad of Texas» and is truly a «Texas Treasure». This historic tourist railroad offers steam train rides that travel through the scenic piney woods and hardwood creek bottoms of East Texas in 1920’s passenger coaches. Steam excursions depart from the Victorian Style Depot in Rusk, Texas for a journey to the Palestine Depot for a lunch layover. TSRR is the home of The Lone Ranger®, so expect to see bandits on the train. Not to worry, The Lone Ranger will save the day. Customers can experience the railroads’ best value by riding in the Premium Lone Star Class Adult Only Car or Family Lone Star Class Car featuring table service aboard a climate controlled car with beverages, snacks, and a souvenir refillable tumbler for everyone. Standard seating in coach or open-air cars is also popular. The railroad is famous for The Polar Express™ Train Ride and other special events and dinner trains! Come make memories with your friends or family TSRR.

History

Established in 1881.

In the late 1800’s the State of Texas built the East Texas State Penitentiary in Rusk, TX. The prison was built to be self-sufficient and its method of doing so was by producing products made from the surrounding native iron ore at the prison’s blast furnaces. During this time the Texas State Railroad was built to complement furnace operations. In 1909 the track was extended to Palestine, TX to broaden the sales market. By 1921 the State of Texas leased the venerable railroad to the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and in 1962 to the Texas South Eastern Railroad. By 1972 the State of Texas decided to turn the Texas State Railroad into a state park and excursion railroad and it opened to the public in 1976. It was operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department until late 2007 at which time American Heritage Railways took over operations continuing the railroad’s great historical tradition and offering the public an exciting and enjoyable trip back in time and fun special events.
