Bruce Duchan, DDS

Dr. Duchan is the friendliest dentist I’ve ever had. He’s very patient, caring, and kind. If you are looking for a dentist around Royal Oak area, I highly recommend him especially if you are in a tight budget.

Dr. Duchan is the first dentist I’ve chosen solely based off of Unilocal reviews, and I’m so glad that I was able to find him. You can tell that Dr. Duchan loves what he does, cares about his patients, likes being a part of the community, and keeps up on the best dental practices from his charmingly retro office. He is always kind on the phone and in person, and remembers when I prefer to come in for appointments. When I’ve had problems with teeth breaking or crowns popping off, he makes sure I can get in to see him quickly, even if it means he stays at the office beyond 6pm. He is fun to talk to, and we usually talk about technology, travel, and funny stories about his patients. He doesn’t do root canals, but I like the endodontist that he recommended to me.
I docked a star because his office feels a little too outdated, and sometimes he seems to have problems with his machine for spraying air and water. He is also so incredibly detailed that it often makes my visits very lengthy. I’ve been in his chair for 2 – 3 hours several times for work on just one tooth. He’s willing to get me in for any little complaint, but sometimes I feel like I’m having to come in too many times for a single tooth (says the girl with a very complex dental history). Also, I wonder if it’s just back luck, but the last few times he’s sent out work to his dental lab for crowns, they’ve had to be redone. That means an additional visit and 2 week wait to have my permanent crown. That being said, he is a perfectionist, and won’t cement a poorly made tooth in your mouth. He’ll make all the necessary adjustments to make it right.
If youre’ looking for an honest, skilled dentist in Royal Oak, I heartily recommend Dr Duchan.

I was a patient of Dr. Duchan’s for three years and can attest to his top notch rating. He’s one of the few things I miss from my days living in MI and wish he could have moved with me!
Dr. Duchan has great patient rapport, will only charge you for what you need, and will give you good advice. As others mentioned, don’t expect a fancy setting (for which you will pay if you go elsewhere). Instead, expect a functional setting that will get the job done at a very reasonable price. He will go out of his way to work with your schedule and will contact you only when you’re due for a check up or cleaning. I never had an insurance claim denied and was happy that everything went smoothly every time I visited his office.
I cannot recommend Dr. Duchan enough if you’re looking for a dentist in the Detroit Metro area. He was worth the drive to Royal Oak from downtown Detroit (where I lived) and believe his past, current and future patients will agree with me.

Dr. Duchan was awesome. I had my first visit with him yesterday for a regular cleaning. He answered all my questions, took care of me and didn’t try to sell me on anything. He is a one-​man show so like other people have said, he’s busy and there isn’t anything super fancy about the office but it’s cozy and clean. I highly recommend him.

What a super nice guy! Not only is this dentist very kind, he’s gentle and knowledgable. Don’t expect any frills and high tech TV’s iPads and all that jazz here. He’s a one man show, he doesn’t even have a dental hygienist! He cleans your teeth himself. I really feel comfortable coming here and never feel like I’m going to be scammed like some other dentists who shall remain nameless.

Moved to the area in October and wanted a dentist that was closer. Went today for the first visit, no wait and he said he does that so people enjoy coming to their appointment. So nice when most doctors cram their schedules to get more money. He did the booking of the appt, insurance phone call to verify coverage, and cleaning. Let my 2 year old sit on my lap the whole time and explained everything to him. He let him play with instruments and water and gave him a toy at the end. My son will be so excited now to see the dentist in the fall for the first time.

Dr. Duchan is a great dentist. He is knowledgeable, friendly, and has a sense of humor. He is a one man show and takes his time when he sees you. I have found my new dentist.

I’m going to make this quick and I swear I’m going to take it easy on the tooth-​related puns. Dr. Duchan is one of the most knowledgeable, professional and accommodating Dentists that I’ve ever come across.
After a quick phone call and a few questions about my insurance, I had an appointment scheduled. I went in for a cleaning and was out of there before I could say «Root Canal.» I even learned a few things about the field of dentistry. I highly recommend you visit Dr. Duchan so you can stop fearing dentist visits.
And if you don’t listen to my advice, well then I hope you get gingivitis, cause you deserve it.

Dr. Duchan is like your favorite uncle, if you have an uncle that likes to operate power tools in your mouth.
So I broke off a part of a molar on a granola bar (yeah, so that happened…), and had gone to University of Michigan Dental School for a consultation. They took one look at my tooth remnant, shrugged their shoulders, and callously spat out the word «implant». They would have yanked out the rest of my tooth right then, if I hadn’t stopped them last minute and asked them to dome it so I can consider my options.
Fast forward to me sitting in Dr. Duchan’s office after somehow stumbling upon his flawless Unilocal reviews, and he tells me there’s more than enough tooth to salvage. A few weeks later, instead of a gummy gap, I have a spanking new crown and a few thousand dollars saved to spend on more granola bars (just kidding.)
Dr. Duchan is a fantastic dentist, and seriously the nicest guy ever. He’s what you would imagine Bob Saget would be like, if Danny Tanner was a dentist. (That’s FULL HOUSE-​era Bob Saget, NOT raunchy comic Saget.) He will involve you in the whole process, put you completely at ease, and still find time to share funny stories with you.
Yeah, his office may feel like it’s from another era, but it’s perfect for him, down to the giant neon molar with the smiley face in the window. Dr. Duchan updates what is most important: he constantly attends conferences and keeps up with the latest developments in his field. I do hope he finds suitable front-​of-​house assistance soon, but the fact that he’s able to gracefully do all the office work himself makes him even more impressive.

I’ve been going to Dr. Duchan for a year now. And i have to say that every experience has been good. He has a great chair side disposition and is keen to talk to me about music and just about anything. His office is a great working class practice. I have driven up to see him sweeping the leaves on the front side walk and he also always answers his own office line. I can generally get in for an appointment fast. He does does the tooth cleanings and can usually take care of any cavities/​touch ups on the spot. He is also able to tell his patients, «let’s keep an eye on that» rather than nailing us with unnessecary work/​bills. I am always skeptical about dentists that drive porsches and have rediculous waiting rooms. But Dr. Duchan is just a regular guy.

I have been coming to Dr. Duchan for several years now and have always had pleasant experiences. I have only been in for routine cleanings but I have complete trust in his work if I ever needed anything more. I like that he does almost everything in the office.

Dr. Duchan runs a very nice practice. If you’re nervous about the dentist like I am this is the place to go. Very good at explaining things and very personable.

After moving back to MI after 12 years in LA, I was dreading the whole doctor and dentist search. Thank you Unilocal for helping take the stress out of this! I was kinda used to the large LA dentist offices where there are tons of employees running around and a hygienist who does all the work (for a cleaning) — you see the dentist the last 5 minutes before you’re sent on your way. Not here. Dr Duchan did the entire exam and cleaning. He’s super friendly and detailed. We even chatted about how people steal the plants he puts outside (who does that?!) Anyway — the day I saw him, he was the only person working. His assistant was studying for the Bar, and thus had the day off. I like when a doc knows his entire practice inside out.

Preface: People ONLY see dentists when they HAVE to. (Unless they’re hypochondriacs.) Case in point: chipped composite filling on my molar or rule out chipped molar tooth.
Hard to top my previous dentist review @ Smile Solutions Dentistry but in terms of service and quality, Dr. Duchan is ⁵⁄₅.
I went for a run around R.O. and stopped in just to make an appointment. He is a one-​man-​show running his front office, doing the dental work, and is the hygienist and dental assistant as well as doing cleanings and sterilizing equipment. He’s also the front office dental assistant scheduling and confirming appointments, verifying and billing insurance co’s. I’m sure there’s a superman costume under his white coat!
Anyhow, booked my appt, filled out the paperwork ahead of time so I didn’t have to on the next visit, ran home and returned 2 days later. His office is like stepping back in Mad Men era circa 1960−70s. Nothing wrong w/​the décor or equipment as everything may look outdated but look closely my friends, it works and is in GOOD condition. (Ever see a garaged ’68 convertible? Yeah, that baby runs and looks good.)
I got my pearly whites cleaned and he did xrays and found that a portion of my composite filling fell out. He offered to numb it up but also gave me the option that its not that bad to require lidocaine. Also, if it bothered me, he’ll stop and lido that jaw up! Rule #1 of a great M.D./D.O./ DDS… give your patients options. I work w/​Dr’s & Dentists so I like that he gave me choices.
Dr. Duchan is gentle, we had casual conversations about Michigan things to do and see and before you know it, finished. Never heard the phone ring once, but I imagine Dr. Duchan isn’t the type to get up in the middle of a patient procedure to answer a phone. He’ll just call you back (as there’s no front staff). When done, he did the math and calculated my copay and I paid (accepts credit cards) and was on my way. None of this shady overbilling for services or Asian Dr’s that don’t charge you the copays but rather bill for other services. (Seem like a good idea? Yeah, no. When you need that filling on tooth #30 but can’t b/​c they billed for it but didn’t’ do it, you’re screwed. And you wonder why we don’t have proper universal health coverage. Shady, shady dr’s and patients! Accountability!)
Docked a star b/​c in the end, I’ve worked as a front and back office dental asst and having front staff would help with his load. He could probably see more patients and not base his office hours on appts if he had more help.
But then again, Dr Duchan said at this stage in his life, he’s not out to be the most high-​tech and get the most patients and turn a big profit. He’s comfortable taking patients as they come and making his own schedule. Maybe I’ll give him that star back. ;)

Dr. Duchan is a gent and a pro. I am SO happy I found him :)

Doctor Duchan runs a no-​frills practice in Royal Oak just down the road from the sweet factory at Pronto and Oakland Community College. You could drive by and miss the modest one storey building, unless searching for parking during one of the many festivals. But inside hides one of the nicest dentists I’ve met, and the sort of practice that brings in all members of the family.
Doctor Duchan is a friendly, sweet-​tempered man who comes out to shake your hand, to ask how you are doing, and to put you at ease. His attentiveness beats the brusque dentists who show up long enough to shove a drill in your mouth and mutter cryptic dental slang over the whir and squeal of machines. Never rushed in bearing and always ready to dispense a smile or helpful information, he personifies a style of dentistry that puts focus on the patient’s needs. I imagine he’s great with kids.
I came for a check up and a periodic cleaning on my last visit, and expressed concerns about sweet/​cold sensitivity in a filled molar. The x-​rays and cleaning passed like a charm, all the while Doctor Duchan explaining some of the processes and options permitted by my insurance, possibilities for the tooth sensitivity, and a run down of good hygiene he’d like a young woman of my age to focus on. I had no idea, for instance, that I would be entitled to more frequent visits during pregnancy and post-​labour. Not that I intend to be in the motherly way any time soon, but this is a useful tidbit probably buried in nine menus of legalese on my insurance provider’s website.
He’s also a funny man, which sure helps when the drills come out. I’m nonplussed about dental work, but I sure like someone who can smile and tell good stories to help the time pass. He’s got a light touch and his hygienist (whose name I cannot recall, but she was returning to school soon) was quick with the suction tube and a total sweetheart. What more can you ask for in a dentist?
Best still, Doctor Duchan does much of his own paperwork and follow-​up. He answers his own phones, leaves personal messages, and answers questions rather than letting an admin or hygienist field all the details when sometimes you need pertinent advice. Not that the staff isn’t helpful — they are an equally lovely bunch with the same down to earth, lovely Midwestern personalities I’ve come to appreciate so much. They help keep things running smoothly.
He sent me off with a bag full of travel-​sized toothpastes and was utterly apologetic for running out of floss, so I got several of those mini-​flossers which are perfect to stash in a purse. My postcard reminding me to go for another checkup showed up a bit ago and when I had to miss an appointment due to an emergency work meeting, Doctor Duchan was totally understanding and great about letting me cancel without a penalty.
Fine office, fabulous people. It may not be sleek and swanky with chrome and Apple-​like white glass everywhere, but it doesn’t need to be when you get quality health care at an affordable price, with a staff who knows what they are doing.

Very nice, attentive doctor. You feel comfortable and attended! No rush, no conveyor, no commercial driven treatments. Great professional. If you need a second opinion on your tooth, go there, you’ll get a fair answer and a recommendation. First doc who clearly and unbiased laid out «pros» and «cons» on wisdom tooth extraction for me.

Dr. Duchan is a great dentist and wonderful person. He is honest, friendly and makes you feel comfortable. He runs the no frills practice and always makes time if an emergency comes about. We travel from the other side of town and I have family who live out of state who always see him when they’re home. I have recommended him to anyone who needs a dentist and will continue to do so.

Bruce Duchan is awesome — I just went there for the first time today and he is honestly the best dentist I have ever been to. Most dentists today (in my experience) are crooks just looking to get rich — but Dr. Duchan was super cool, and he took his time with me. I am so excited that after searching for a dentist, I finally found one!
Bonus: The office has on-​site parking, so no meters!

Dr. Duchan is always a pleasure, however, recently he was extremely accommodating when a filling broke off my tooth. He was able to fit me into his schedule with very little notice, and he did a wonderful job, nearly painless, fixing my tooth. He always practices gently, and the amount of care he provides for each patient is truly astounding. When I move to New York in 2010, I will probably find some way to fly into Michigan to get my twice yearly exams from Dr. Duchan.
