History
Established in 1978.
Responding to the energy crisis of the 1970s, a group of Boston residents founded the Boston Building Materials Co-op in 1978 to provide people with affordable materials to make their homes more energy-efficient and knowledge to do the work themselves. The Co-op’s first years were focused on cellulose insulation, window repair, and high-quality storm windows. Over the years, the Co-op began offering kitchen cabinetry and kitchen design, and moved to Terrace Street in 1990.
In 1993, the Co-op started the Reuse Center, previously known as the Building Materials Resource Center, to prevent good materials from becoming waste and direct them toward hardworking homeowners. The Reuse Center operated out of unheated trailers and shared space with the Co-op until its current building was constructed in 1995.
The change to a single name, Boston Building Resources, was made in 2011.
