There are very few things in life I like to eat. But the fried rice here is one of them! I’m constantly craving it and always find myself coming back to this place time and time again to get it. I usually get my fried rice with tofu. I don’t really like eating tofu but somehow I prefer it for this dish. I used to buy entire party trays of this stuff to share with my kindergarten class and they loved it, always asking for seconds, thirds and even fourths(those little ones are picky! So I’m even more amazed that they like it so much). Don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t get my fried rice fix from here. So thankful that this place is in operation

The food is nice and delicious(their nasi goreng is the best) for me their gado gado is not that good, the way they serve the food is so casual we ate there several time, the place is decently clean

Being an Indonesian Chinese, I must say the food is pretty authentic. I have only recently tried their nasi bungus which is very good. Also had my first lamb date which is very juicy and tasty. I think their soto ayam is very on point as well.

Nasi gorang was good! It’s my second favorite that I’ve had from many different Indo restaurants in southern California. I had a few other things that were also good. I definitely would go back if I was in the area.

The food is ok. But the service is terrible! I ordered Rujak Juhi, and they gave me Tahu telor with peanut sauce. After eating it, I realized this is not what I ordered! I asked the lady, and she told me, «Oh, maybe its the wrong one.» WTH? They know they gave me the wrong order and dont even tell me until I realized it! And she asked me if they can just put the«Juhi» on the top of the wrong food. Oh my Gosh! So cheap. Its not my fault that you gave me the wrong food. I asked for a new plate! And its not even a minute, she brought the food out. And guess what, they charged me for the wrong food! I asked them why, and they said because they replace it already. Of course I dont want to pay for it! Wont coming back for sure!

This restaurant has the best Nasi Bungkus, but unfortunately it’s only available on Saturday and Sunday. The empek-empek and otak-otak are also very good.

The food here was absolutely amazing! Truly authentic, tastes like my Oma and Opa used to make! I wish there was one near my home in Orange County. I’d say it’s worth a drive out if you’re looking for real Indo food.

I stop by here every time I am in the area for the Nasi Bungkus for my husband and the #44 fried noodles for me. Nasi Bungkus is only available on weekends and is a delicious mix of multiple types of meat and rice that comes out wrapped in a banana leaf. You will see most people ordering one of these two items on the weekends for good reason. If you like spicy you can mix in the delicious chili paste that comes inside your Nasi Bungkus. The fried noodles are bursting with flavor and worth ordering extra spicy for that kick that still leaves the flavor. I used to order it with Chicken every time but I got Tofu this last time and the tofu still had tons of flavor. If you really like insane spicy you might be able to ask for what I ordered the last time, though I found it slight overkill. The regular«hot» or «very spicy» of this dish packs plenty of heat while being easy to devour the whole dish in one sitting. I haven’t found a noodle dish anywhere else that is this good, although Ramayani’s fried noodles are very close. Prices are very reasonable, and under $ 10 for a plate. Despite living in San Diego we stop by this place every time we are in the area because we can’t get enough of the food. I have ordered the fried noodles 4 different times and it is always fantastic. I’m not sure about the complaints about the service because we always receive everything quickly. Summary: Order the Nasi Bungkus or Fried Noodles #44. I love the noodles so much I haven’t ordered anything else on each visit.

Came here with the family and first thing I noticed when I came in was that there was a male worker just chilling in the back of the restaurant doing nothing but reading. So my first impression of this restaurant was that they must probably had lazy servers. I was proven wrong once we were seated, we were being served immediately. So that’s good news. I later learned that the one who was chilling in the back was the owner of the restaurant. Now it all made sense. I learned a valuable lesson that night: Owners can very much chill while everyone else must work hard. The combination fried rice here was a bit salty but delicious, the sweet marinated fried chicken was great, the stir fried morning glory was good, but the banana leaf wrapped rice lacked of a bit taste. The mom and my gf ordered durian ice, they loved it! I hate anything with durian, but as long as they did, all was good. Overall the food here was good. However due to the owner just sitting around, chilling in the back, I can’t help but pity the employees working here, therefore this place is a 3 stars in my book.

I was so disappointed. They only have the banana leaf-wrapped meals on the weekends! I guess I should not have expected too much since overall they’re only rated three stars. I came for late dinner on a weekday and there was no one else in the restaurant. An older lady seated my party and I at a booth. For the rest of the night, I saw her just sitting around. A younger lady took our orders and served the food. She was nice and told us their popular dishes since it was our first time. She gave me a juice box for checking in on Unilocal.Service was just eh since it was just us that night. They seem like nice people though. I tried the combination fried rice(#5, $ 8). It had some shrimp, small chunks of chicken, and a fried egg on top. I thought it was slightly lacking flavor and on the dry side. I would have liked the egg cooked over easy instead of medium so that the rice wouldn’t be so dry. I asked for more fried onion to make the rice taste better. I also tried some of the noodle with beef ball soup(#47, $ 7). The soup was so salty; I had to wash it down with water. The only part that was good about the noodles were the fried onions and beef. The noodles were dry and also lacking flavor. I thought that dish was unbalanced. I probably won’t be back unless it was the weekend to try their nasi bunkus and exotic smoothies.

Very good food and friendly service. A good mix of spicy and sweet. Fish, noodles, rice, durian drink and small snacks that add to the whole experience. I have not eaten at many Indonesian restaurants but the food is definitely worth trying out. It is a mix of South East Asian and east Asian dishes. Four stars over all.

Ordered chicken satay to go but decided to eat it in the car right away since we had time. First, the satay doesn’t taste very Indonesian. It didn’t really have much of a taste, except the chicken it self tasted off. Like it was spoiled but they cooked it anyway! When inquired for the free tea, the girl was very paranoid that we didn’t check in to claim it. Overall, this is not a place we will return.

I love Java Spice’s combination fried noodle lunch special.(Tues– Fri, 11 to 3PM. $ 6.50 plus tax = $ 7.09) Got it to-go today for lunch. Only the combo noodles are suppose to be chicken and shrimp. Sadly, today I only got chicken noodles. They still taste delicious and the price for the portion is great. Just gotta be careful in the future and make sure they give me what I ordered. I wish Unilocal would let me give half stars. I want to give 3.5 stars. 3 is too little but I think 4 stars are too much for this time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a fan, just a slightly disappointed fan? :(

So we just got done eating here, and in the last 5 mins we saw cockroaches crawling down the walls! Gross! Granted it was late and they were probably tired, but that’s no excuse for the workers to act like they didn’t even want to serve us. They messed up our avocado shake also– I’m pretty sure it wasn’t supposed to have coffee mixed with avocado. They also gave small boxes when we asked for big Togo boxes. Just overall not a good experience. The gado gado was«eh…», the fried rice was pretty good. But overall the customer service was not great. I’m no Indonesian but the rest of my group was– and they said they most likely will not return here. Tempeh House they said is much better.

Decided to give this place a try since I haven’t tried Indo food in a while and this place is pretty close to my work. There weren’t too many people here during peak lunch time which was a little worry-some but also convenient since we didn’t have to wait. I’d say that their prices are reasonable and their menu selection is good. They have rice dishes, combinations, soups, and dessert drinks. My coworker got their lunch special shrimp chicken noodles which was really good. I liked that one a lot. I got the Nasi campur, but it was alright. If you’re in the mood for Indo food, this is probably the only one in Rowland Heights that I know of. It’s worth it to come give it a try. I personally prefer the one in West Covina though, but I wouldn’t mind coming back for their lunch special. Private lot inside the Yes Plaza. Very easy. **FREEDRINKWITHCHECKIN!**

There are some reviews here on Unilocal about the fried rice at Java Spice how it is dry. First of all Indonesian fried rice is essentially rice that is fried and we use a type of rice that’s drier. That is the typical authentic fried rice. If I go to an Indonesian restaurant with fried rice cooked with sushi type of rice which is common with Korean fried rice dish I would never have gone back. I’m not saying that Korean fried rice isn’t good, but different. You seek food adventure, you found one but you try to change the taste because it just doesn’t agree with your closed minded taste buds? Of course not! You embrace different flavors. If not you can’t travel without relying on eating at McDonald’s around the world. If that is who you are then sans food adventure or at least leaving bad reviews. Okay, end rant. That said, the fried rice in Java spice really reminded me when I was growing up in the old country. In Jakarta there are street fried rice/noodle food vendors that goes around neighbourhoods at night time. Well, Java spice thank you for reminding me of that childhood taste. I have to say I don’t put stock in the rest of the offered dishes. I come to Java spice only for their fried rice.

Always one of my all time favorite Indonesian restaurants! You get a spice of everything. Ayam Kalassan(fried chicken with dipping sauce) — NOTYOURTYPICALFRIEDCHICKEN. This fried chicken was succulent and juicy; not overcooked. You just have to get this chicken, it will change your life. Nasi Bunkus(banana leaf wrapped rice, with meats and spiciness; only available on the weekends) One of my favorites. it has a combination of chicken, beef, egg, and this special vegetable. Just great exotic southeast asian flavors all in one dish! satay ayam– perfectly grilled chicken satay with a delicious peanut sauce on the side to top it off. chicken is very moist and flavorful. pem pem mie– fried fishcake with noodles. This brings back childhood memories. Perfectly well done, and crisp to the edges. Spicy but not overwhelming. cendol– coocnut cream with green jellies. so refreshing on a hot day like this. If you like coconut, then try this. DELICIOUS teler– shaved coconuts, avocado, jackfruit pieces. where do you ever find jackfruit in a dish? probably never! Just can never get enough of these dessert drinks

Tasty and I would definitely revisit when it is not a super busy night. I am so relieved I grabbed takeout on this first visit here because parking is insane on a Saturday night at 7ish!!! Enjoyed the takeout gado gado, nasi goreng, mi goreng, and chicken satay with an extra large side of peanut sauce. I wish the peanut sauce had a little more flavor and depth to it, but nothing I couldn’t doctor up a bit at home. After reading more Unilocal reviews, I definitely want to try some more of their dishes. Restaurant was packed and seemed clean and bright. Look forward to returning!

Java Spice is an Indonesian restaurant located in an Asian strip mall in Rowland Heights. I was visiting my sister and her fiancé who live in the OC. I am going to Penang soon so they brought me here to familiarize myself with the food of the region. Indonesian food is very similar to Malaysian and many dishes overlap between these two countries. The restaurant is very casual. It is not a huge place, but comfortable enough. The menu is reasonably priced, so you will get good bang for your buck here. They even have a Unilocal check-in deal here for a free soda or Tehbotol. The latter is a popular Indonesian drink of Jasmine tea. I let my hosts order as they are regulars here. Tried four things including mee goreng, satay with peanut sauce, nasi bungkus and cendol for dessert. Mee goreng is basically a fried noodles dish that is like chow mein and yakisoba. Predictably I enjoyed this dish as I like noodles a lot. Same can be said for the satay. Meat on a stick. I am sold. Then there is the nasi bungkus which is only available on weekends. It is a meal wrapped up in banana leaves. Inside the wrap is chicken, egg, fried tofu and jackfruit. The big surprise is the spicy green chili sauce which can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. I had some Mexican food earlier in the day and found the nasi bungkus to be too massive to eat in one sitting. So much food. Not a problem though as this makes for a good leftover meal for later. Lastly is the cendol which is a bit unusual looking. It is a dessert with green colored noodles made with a rice flour that is mixed together with shaved ice. I liked it, but did not love it. Nevertheless, I would definitely try it again when I visit Penang to see how it compares to the one at Java Spice. Now I know what to expect. I enjoyed the food at Java Spice. It served as a great introduction to the food of the Java region. If you are tired of Thai and Vietnamese food, look to the south. There is more to Southeast Asian food than those two cuisines. Give Indonesian cuisine a chance. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
