Don Bosco Technical Institute

After visiting several Catholic high schools, participating in several shadow days at four of them, and then attending summer school at two of them, our son chose Bosco Tech. All were good schools and, after applying to his top three choices, taking entrance exams, and participating in interviews, he was accepted by all of them– Bosco was just the best fit for him. He’s always been an inventive, hands-​on kind of student.
Bosco offers a college prep curriculum with honors and AP courses plus daily instruction in five technologies: computer science and electrical engineering (CSEE), architecture and construction (ACE), media arts (MAT), materials science (MSET), and integrated design and engineering art (IDEA).
Bosco is quite generous with merit scholarships and financial assistance. We have found the administration, faculty and staff to be professional, positive, supportive, and friendly.

Very disappointed with this school. We talked to valeria de la luna, she was very rude to us and accused us of bad parenting. You cannot accuse what you dont know. The principle xavier jimenez brought false hopes to my son that he had a guarantee admission to the school. My son was so happy that he was joining the technical institute. But they denied him, they didn’t even contact to tell us of the situation. We had to call and see what the status was, we had no contact from the principle or any staff. Im here to let people know what happened to us. Hopefully no one else has to go through this. Why deny education to a child?

The school is definately not worth the money. Unfortunately, a Catholic School education is not what it used to be. I suggest finding a good charter school and investing your time and money there.
This is a different school than it was 30 years ago. Unfortunately, they did not keep up with the changing technology and instead wasted time and effort building ½ a football field and supporting a lousey football team.
We send our children to school to get an education. Extracurricular activities are just that extra! It is a shame that the focus was lost over the years. I hope that they are able to get back on track, but know that it will take years to get back to excellence. The current students will be getting an average education, at best.

I attended the «Don Bosco Tech» football game versus the Bishop Montgomery Knights on 10÷4÷2012. The game was played at Gabrielino High School. The visiting Knights beat the Tigers by a score of 35 to 14. The tri-​tip sandwiches at the game were $ 6.00, while the corn on the cob was $ 2.00. Parking was free.

Woah! It’s been 20 years. This school is one of a kind. Bosco Tech turns kids into engineers, builders, scientist, doctors, lawyers, and working professionals. Not too many schools are both high schools and colleges together and teach technology. The curriculum consist of a college prep education with an emphasis in technology.
When I came here years ago, I finished up in the college program which is high school in 3 years and 2 years of college work. One had to choose 1 out of 7 different technologies as a freshman. The technology that chose is the degree you graduated with after 5 years. I was in the department of construction techology and transferred over to get my engineering degree in construction at a four year college. I learned the basics at a very young age which isn’t taught in college. It made college that much easier and gave me an advantage over all including in the workplace.
What made this school special is that it’s helped young kids find their path. After 24 years from when I started at Don Bosco, I’m still in the construction industry and have been able to build iconic Southern California landmarks from highways to tunnels, museums to stadiums. The teachers here are very dedicated and love what they do. It also shows in the product of students this school produces. Many of my friends who made use of their education at Bosco have done very well.
From my experience, it’s worth every penny and and investment coming to this school. The potential is great for anyone who has graduated from here.

The only thing I can say is the gym is clean but what they can do is pull out the bleachers for us so that the people that cheer and loved ones have a place to sit instead of sitting on the floor on the sidelines.

School is school. What’s funny about the last two guys posting before me is that one went to a university and the other to a community college. Do you guys see the stark contrast in rating? This place will make college much easier to matriculate into. How do I know? I graduated from here at 16 and transferred in as a sophomore to the university I decided to go to. I’m no genius as I was ranked near the middle of my class, but if someone like me with my ranking is able to achieve what I have, then there is something different about this place isn’t there? Saying that this place is worse than a public school is just about the most ignorant line I’ve read in the last few years. If you don’t succeed, it isn’t about the school, it’s you. This place gives you every opportunity to, but don’t expect it to be easy as you have to earn everything you get.

Great high school. Graduated in 2004, CS. Caring faculty. There’s still people I keep in touch with til now. Big emphasis on athletics, though I believe that caused a large shift in school priority, leading to the state it’s in now… big fields and a shell of its former self. I miss the culture that was there when the school had more life.
I’ve gone back before, and the school has changed though. Hopefully things will turn for them, but they still have a lot going and DBTI is still not to be missed.
They have to bring back the 5 year associates degree back, throw in more funding for diversified student programs, listen to the needs of the students, and just bring back some energy. You don’t need big changes, just small improvements all around.

It’s really hard to rate educational institutions because pretty much half of the experience depends on the teachers and staff and the other half depends all on the individual student.
Meaning, it would be unfair for someone to give a school a low rating if they were never into it and just half-​assed it the whole time.
I graduated from DBTI in 2003 in Materials Science, which was probably the last graduating class in which this school was still decent. But even then, the school had too many severe flaws. As with many private schools, this school always seemed to be run like a business rather than a school. I felt like I could pretty much do whatever I wanted all the time, get away with things and such, and as long as my parents kept writing the checks, then the school was okay with me. It always felt like the school cared about my parent$’ well-​being rather than my own.
The teachers consisted from great, intelligent people (word to the English Dept., M.S.) to disturbed head-​cases, to coaches clearly doing the school a favor.
This is also one of those high school that is way too gung-​ho about the school’s sports teams and the Athletic Department. Many of the teachers HEAVILY favored athletes, which I always found pretty comical since the teams (except for track/​CC) were always pretty bad. And then that led to the school dumping all it’s money into a stadium and renovations for the baseball field and other unnecessary junk. It basically bankrupted the school, ending the school’s signature 5-​year college program and caused several other significant cuts.
I mainly just sit back and laugh at the mess now. And I’m glad I graduated from there at the perfect time, before the school went to shit.
I don’t know how much longer it’s going to last, but when I went there it was a male-​only high school, which was frustrating for any teenage male like myself, but yeah, in the end I guess it was a good thing. There weren’t any girls for the guys to fight over or get all stupidly macho about, and because of this, and the fact that the school’s student population is on the small side, the majority of students got along really well. I made a lot of good friends while I was there and there were rarely any fights or drama or big scandals or anything like that. It always felt like a safe place to be. The only time any of my friends or I ever half-​joked about someone maybe wanting to pull off a Columbine, it was about a teacher and not a student. But of course, the lack of girls around all the time will damage your girl-​communication skills once you get to college. I know.
So if this was around 1999, I would say «Yeah, you should maybe send your kid here,» but this is 2008 and the school is much worse off now than it was when I was there, so I would say «Keep your kid away from this school. Send him to a public school.»
