Sora

Needed a bite between flights and sushi sounded good. Self seating here and our drink order taken promptly. Our drink order was delivered wrong. We waited an unreasonable amount of time to place our food order. The food came in a reasonable amount of time but my sushi order was wrong. The sushi itself was just ok and our servers inability to get anything right just made it an unpleasant experience altogether. If your going to charge an arm and a leg for sushi in the airport. Get it right folks.

Used to love this place when I was in Detroit but after a few bad experiences I likely won’t go back.
This time I sat down and waited 10 minutes for a menu. I finally had to ask for one. Then my waitress almost gave me someone else’s drink. When she finally came back for me to order, I did and when the food came she almost put it on another patron’s table.
When he said that wasn’t what he ordered she switched and put it on my table without a word. Didn’t even so much as ask if I needed anything else.
I did need something else so I had to track down someone else to get that for me.
When I was ready to pay she was no where to be found. I flagged someone else and told them that I needed to pay.
Management: you need to make a change to your service or your big new location won’t last long.

After a 24 hour flight from Singapore, I was craving some hot noodle soup. The chashu ramen was ok — I greatly appreciated that the broth was not overly salty or over-​the-​top umami, however the broth was not flavorful from that standpoint. The meat was slightly overcooked. I don’t frequent the detroit airport, but the restaurant seemed overstaffed, and the waitress served me my ramen, apologizing that ¾ of the spoon had sunk into the soup…

When every restaurant in DTW is rated 3 stars or less on average on Unilocal,what do you do? Yikes. So I came here on a mental coin toss and it definitely was disappointing.
The service was amusing at best with the bartender calling everyone «honey» but moving quite slowly and asking me to let her know if I needed anything, just ask. This is code-​speak for «you gotta shout at me cuz I ain’t gonna watch to see if you need anything.» The manager (yes it said so on her name tag) stood like a zombie at a corner of the bar and chatted occasionally with the bartender and waitresses. At different points staff discussed what they were eating for dinner during their break. None wanted the food here. That of course is something you just don’t say in front of the customers. During the second half of my dinner at the bar the manager stood at the front of the restaurant behind the hostess and did nothing.
The bar began to build up trash (including mine) and I noticed about 6 styrofoam cups, staff drinks no doubt, except one waitress helped herself to the fountain drinks while the bartender was away.
The food — all sushi — was average at best but the attitude of the staff, the complete «I don’t care» attitude was just unacceptable. The wine selection is abysmal and the hard liquor selection had some gaps.
One of the sushi chefs came over to the bar and with his plastic gloved hands opened the refrigerator by its unclean handle. Guys, gloves aren’t for protecting your hands, they’re for keeping the food sterile.
The manager is ultimately responsible and her employees are all misbehaving very badly. Avoid this place.

Okay so the sashimi was good in the Chirashi bowl and very well seasoned rice. But it was way overpriced so that’s why it got 3 stars for me. Airport or not it was pricy.

My favorite place to eat on my frequent layovers in Detroit. You would not expect a Japanese restaurant with sushi thru ramen, D more. But I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve had here.

I was able to sit where I wanted and there was no wait for a table. The staff was very quick with a menu and provided my water right away.
I ordered the takoyaki (an octupus dish where bits of octopus are encased in a breaded ball), which I have not had in years and a gyoza (dumpling) ramen.
The food came out in just 10 minutes. The takoyaki were probably frozen but they were heated properly. Not as good as you would find from a street vendor, but still tasty.
The ramen was good. Not the best I have had, even in the states, but so much better than that bowl of sewage I was served in Atlanta at Umaizushi. (Please see my review).
The broth was very clean (a good sign) and it was a shio (salt) based, rather than a full on shoyu. The soup flavor could still be more robust.
The gyoza were fried just right and still remained crispy for some time in the broth. There was a hint of ponzu when I ate them, which was a nice touch.
The noodles were a proper aldente and contained a nice egg flavor.
I would recommend both, as they are not common in Japanese restaurants in the States. Just keep in mind it still isn’t the quality you should expect in Japan, or at. An established place in LA.
The staff was busy and didn’t really interact too much, with which I am fine.

Finally! A restaurant in an airport that you can call a restaurant. Well done Detroit! Only an hour or so ago I could not find a decent option in Washington Dulles airport and boom this place has a mile of option including this beauty. Self seating, professional and fast service with fresh fish. Can’t go wrong. Not a full 5 stars but very close. And if this place does not do it for you there are a host of other options just a short walk away. Happy we landed here!

Had a fairly long layover in the Detroit Metro Airport, so my husband and I decided to stop for a sit-​down meal.
Our waitress was nice, but man, the staff were mostly milling about or yelling across the restaurant to each other. «HEY! HEY! TELL HER SHE HAS A TABLE!»…really guys. Really.
The sushi was just not good. Overly fishy smell indicating it was probably old. The prices were also pretty steep; $ 4 for a tiny bowl of miso and $ 20-​$ 35 for simple rolls? Jeez.
Basically, skip this place and go somewhere else in the airport if you have time. Too much money for crappy quality sushi.

CAVEAT: one visit
FIRST IMPRESSION: LOADS of personnel milling around, most not doing much while a few work hard; menu is fairly pricey ($ 8-​$ 19 rolls and entrees mostly $ 20 – 40) so I expect the product to match a decent non-​airport location. Nope.
After ordering, I watch the sushi chefs pre-​slice fish (very thinly) re-​plate and put them back in the case. I realize that more than half of the product in the cases is pre-​sliced. Ummm…
I had a snow crab seaweed salad. Soggy, clearly previously frozen snow crab. Seaweed and sliced cucumbers are fully submerged in 3 inches of vinegar water (not much vinegar, mostly water.) No seasoning of any kind beyond a hint of vinegar. Tasteless, soggy mess of a dish ($ 16.)
Also had a basic yellowtail and scallion roll ($ 9.) Serviceable at best. Not much yellowtail and what there was looked like coarsely chopped leftover trimmings.
VERDICT: Not good food. They are spending a ton of money on labor and none on product. Service depends on server. Whether you eat sushi rarely or often, this is not recommended. If it’s your first try, definitelt stay away. This won’t make a great first impression.
Best thing I had was a $ 7 small Sapporo.

Although the sushi was ok at my last visit, I agree that the overall quality of this restaurant has gone down since the remodel. The prices are absurd and the service is lackluster.
I stopped in at 11am on a Sunday. About half of the tables were full, but it wasn’t busy by any means. I ordered a tuna roll, a tofu roll, and a miso soup. Most of the «simple rolls» were $ 8 (including the ones I ordered) and the soup was $ 4; note that I strategically ordered items that seemed somewhat reasonable. All the specialty/​combo rolls were about $ 20, including the Alaska Roll (which is simply a combination of salmon, cucumber, and avocado– all ingredients that were in the $ 8 simple rolls).
My waitress brought me a water and took my order then went missing for over 30 minutes, so after someone else brought my food and I was finished, I asked another server if he could bring me the check and he did.
The new space is beautiful, but I’ll avoid this place unless I’m desperate next time I’m in DTW.

Indifferent service, item on menu «no longer available », they sent me wrong food and I had to wait 20 minutes. By the way no liquor license. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME.

My wife and I used to eat here a lot before the remodel job… we went in for the first time since the renovation and were both extremely disappointed! Their once friendly and efficient wait staff was GONE… The new people are greenhorns at best… We ordered two of the salads with ginger dressing and they were both full of decomposed greens! We had never before had a bad salad from this place…
We started pick through the salads to see if there was anything salvageable because it took so darn long to get them in the first place and it’s an airport full of people on tight schedules for flights… but we gave up on the salads and after a very long wait our waitress finally came back so we pointed out the rotten lettuce and she just said «sorry»… Did not adjust our bill and did not offer anything else as far as replacement.
That was the last time we will eat at this once great place to eat… We asked if the place was under new ownership and the response was «no it is the same owners»…
They just made some really bad mistakes and decisions… Boo

–Hostess was having a conversation with a friend and couldn’t be bothered to recognize my existence or seat me
–Menu was not descriptive. «Great Lakes Roll» — fine, but what is it? Had to ask waitress to describe a whole bunch of rolls
–Food took a while to come, even though I was one of few people there
–Cost was a bit obscene. Two simple sushi rolls + soda = $ 50. Sushi was good but not that good
–No alcohol!!! They have none. It’s not a local law or something — plenty of people were openly drinking at other restaurants. They must have had their liquor license revoked. Was really looking forward to a cold beer before my overnight flight
Won’t be going back.

This is a decent sushi spot at DTW in a sea of otherwise unhealthy and overpriced food options. The service is typically quick and the food quality pretty good. I’ve had better sushi and rolls, but certainly not in an airport. The space has recently been doubled in size so the tables in the back are now much more accessible than they were previously.

Went here looking for an alternative to the usual unhealthy airport options but it was some of the most disappointing sushi I’ve had. I usually get specialty rolls but the specialty rolls here averaged about $ 20 each, so I had to settle for classic rolls.
I ended up ordering a spicy tempura shrimp roll and a spicy scallop roll. The shrimp was decent but certainly not worth the price. I was excited to see the scallop roll on the menu but I didn’t even finish it. To top it off the spicy mayo on both rolls was very bland.
I will say that it was crowded in there around 6:00, so maybe I just picked the wrong rolls.

Very good sushi and fresh fish. Might be a tad overpriced for the size of the rolls but that’s to be expected at an airport. Also the ramen was excellent.

If you ever transit at Detroit airport, I won’t recommend this place to eat.
Ordered the Soba, it taste bland.
The price ?? Unreasonable, even for airport.

Fresh sushi! Had a layover here and was hungry for some sushi and Ramen noodles, so I had the salmon and avocado and tried the soup with the potstickers, Gyoza was the name, Very good! Would recommend it!

Nothing outstanding about Sora. For airport sushi, I guess it’s OK. I had a salmon roll and tuni roll. Fish was underwhelming, dry, and had barely any flavor. Way too much rice. Their menu also isn’t completely Japanese, with some Korean dishes added in as well. I’m skipping this place next time I’m in DTW.

OK for airport ramen — I had the charsiu ramen which had good noodles, but suffered from mediocre broth and overcooked lean chewy charsiu. The portion size was a bit on the small side. However, I enjoyed having ramen noodles and it was OK.
It looks like most of the diners choose the sushi, but it didn’t really look all that fresh. All of the fish looked dry and slightly off colored.
If I wasn’t there on a Sunday, I would totally have opted for Chickfila. Maybe next time.

DISAPPOINTED. We stop here every time we travel through DTW. Typically this is the highlight of a flight into DTW. The new menu and décor lack the previous charm of Sora prior to their renovation. The restaurant was dirty this time. Used napkins and chopsticks on several tables around us. The staff seemed bored. Our udon looked delicious but was bland. The California rolls were still tasty. That was the only thumbs up!

I LOVE this place! Whenever I am traveling through DTW airport, I pray I will have a layover long enough for a visit to Sora! The Udon Tempura bowl is my all time fav here, with the freshest and best tempura shrimp with delicious udon noodles and broth, along with veggies. I order extra shrimp, $ 4 each, pricy, but so worth it. Sushi is also amazing. This is an airport restaurant, in Detroit, so do not expect to find every kind of sushi here. However, what they do offer is fresh, beautiful and excellent. They recently remodeled, adding open spaces and now offer a sushi bar for seating, a second bar area for seating with a big TV, a high family style table top and lots of two tops, some close enough to be considered four tops. The new layout is very open and simple, which I always find refreshing. The service has been and is still outstanding. If you are lucky, you will get to try this place sometime and see for yourself. It this were a outside the airport, I would dine here more often and give it 5 stars. As an airport option, I wish I could give it 6, it is so much better then most airport options. This is not a chain, but a unique and fabulous place. I can’t wait for my next decent layover at DTW and my next visit to Sora!

Best airport sushi I have ever had.
I was here during a layover to Chicago and I wanted something more substantial than a snack but not big enough to be a meal. Sushi was on my mind’s menu.
I was a teeny bit wary because the space seemed crowded and a little dirty around the sushi bar seating area, but after a server cleared off a space for me and my traveling companion, my fears were put to rest.
I got a lobster tempura roll, fried dumplings and a California roll and both rolls were very fresh, and pretty much superior to most any roll I’ve ever ordered at any restaurant. As a matter of fact, I or ordered sushi 3 times while in Chicago to try to achieve the same level of precision and artistry, and everywhere else failed!
And speaking of fail, the dumplings were a pure fail. Too greasy, too pricey and not worth mentioning except to tell you not to get ‘em.
Overall, I’d eat here again. The service was wicked fast and the check came even faster. Bring right underneath the tram, the servers here know how to get you in and out without batting an eye so you don’t miss your flight!

Wandered into Sora way too early in the morning, but admittedly a very pleasant restaurant. We really didn’t get much though since it was too early and didn’t really want to eat a lot or anything before a 14 hr flight.
While we only had an order of takoyaki and miso soup, I would really like to keep Sora in mind in case I’m trapped in Detroit ever again– A very likely scenario whenever flying with Delta. The sushi menu did interest me some and the service was pleasant, though found the price a little steep for some maki, but I’d still like to try it, maybe on the return flight to DTW I might luck out with a to go. The takoyaki was very subpar though… no aonori or mayo accompaniment and the takoyaki wasn’t even spherical, but had deflated into almost fluffed mini-​pancakes. Outside wasn’t very crispy – One was even overcooked/​burnt. The taste was fine though.
Aside that, they really don’t seem half bad, just a tiny bit pricey but that’s airport food for you.

Really great (somewhat pricey) sushi bar and restaurant.
My server, Preciana, was so pleasant and proactive. Stopped by frequently and had a big bold smile on her face. Excellent customer service. The miso soup served with entres, was yummy straight up. Bits of seaweed and onions and tofu oh my! The chirashi had seaweed salad, bamboo shoots (?), spicy squid, salmon sashami and roe, and crab strips, as well as pickled cucumbers and sticky rice underneath (for those who don’t know about chirashi and it’s deliciousness). Yumm-​y.
Great little stop before my afternoon work began. Will stop by again and hopefully I have the same server… great.
Interior: ⁷⁄₁₀ decent seating but I’m by no means a fan of the «scenic» view outside the window.

Pretty good sushi…
I ordered the chirashi to eat on my flight back to Houston. I was told after placing my order that the wait would be 10 – 15 minutes. However, my order came out in record time. After 5 minutes, my order was ready!
The bowl came with a miso soup which was pretty tasty. The chirashi itself was a bowl of sushi rice topped off with about 5 pieces of sashimi, octopus, tamago, imitation crab, shrimp, a gochujang and sesame oil based octopus salad, cucumber and two different seaweed salads. It sounds like a lot, and don’t get me wrong the sushi was fresh and it all tasted great, but for $ 30 it was a little overpriced.
Despite the price, I enjoyed my meal. I may or may not go back.

It’s decent for an airport sushi bar. The fish is fresh and it’s on par with everywhere else. I really like that sushi is made fresh and you aren’t forced to choose from a refrigerated selection. Given that it’s an airport, options are limited and space is rather tight. However I was very much impressed by service. There are very few food options at this airport. I’ve dined here once before years ago, and dined here again on this trip. Unless better options become available, I’ll dine here again.

While in the Detroit airport and if you need a sushi fix, then this is your place. Be prepared to meet as most times there seems to be a wait. It is a busy, cramped place but once you get past that, it can be an enjoyable experience.
The fish is fresh, but if ordering sushi, note that they serve a single piece, not two as in most sushi restaurants. I. Have not tried the other options on the menu besides sushi, but I have seen many other diners enjoying their meals.

I travel fairly regularly, and whenever I get a layover in Detroit, I always cross my fingers that I’m near Sora! Service is always incredibly fast considering the standard for sushi in the US, and it ain’t bad at all! My favorite combo is getting the ramen and one of the simpler rolls, like spicy tuna or salmon. While I can’t say that I’ve gone for fish alone, whatever roll I’ve gotten has always been exactly what I was looking for! The ramen always just hits the spot, warm, salty, savory.
It’s not a place I would crave outside of an airport, but it’s definitely my number one choice in one! And the service is always stellar, never a dry cup in the place.

I try to stop here every time I’m in the airport with time to grab a bite. The bim mi bap (spelling) bowl is one of my go to big dishes.
With a tighter connection, I like the non-​specialty sushi rolls. For the price, two or three of these rolls is a good value for airport food.
Usually feel rushed here because they want to turnover your seat fast. Since it is seat yourself, go to the back so it takes them longer to shoo you out.

Layover in Detroit — I’d love to say I got drunk to forget where I was at, but I just didn’t have the time. Instead, I made a quick stop to Sora.

You won’t have the best sushi of your life here, but considering you’re at an airport (ahem: In Detroit!), Sora knocks it out of the park!

Basically Sora is going to be my go to restaurant whenever I wait for connection flight in the future. It’s not that the food quality is so good, it’s just that it’s relatively better than other Japanese restaurants built into airports in U.S.
I had Tempura Soba and had a chance to taste the Udon as well. The taste of soup is very light, probably coming from the Kansai style as opposed to Tokyo style which have stronger flavor in the fish sauce. The tempura is just meh but I wasn’t hoping for much to begin with.
Rainbow roll was less than what I expected for the price I paid. It was a roll with some tiny and fewer fish varieties compared to other Sushi restaurants I went to. So you might just stick to the food that fills your stomach as opposed to ordering expensive and small portion items.
I also saw few Japanese CA dining here and that’s a good indication for me that this is probably the one to go if I want healthy and decent food in this ai port.
