La Scala Mediterranean Bistro

This was a great relaxing evening with delicious food. The waitress made a few blunders but the host more than made up for it with a small free appetizer and limoncello drinks after dinner. The atmosphere is so comfy!

One of the nicest restaurants in Rome. High-​quality food in an upscale yet unpretentious environment, with friendly service to boot. The terrific wine list and very extensive gluten-​free menu will keep me coming back time and again.

Went here tonight on a much needed date night. Britney, the server, was wonderful. Nice, sweet, and very attentive (she even let us move when the 93 degree sunshine came through the window.) The calamari was good, crisp, but very salty, a theme that would run through the rest of the meal. (Now I know why there are no salt shakers on the table.) My wife had to send her meal back to the kitchen and they did offer to make her something else but she thanked them and we left.
Don’t think we’ll go here again.

Pasta pear pockets are delish and ahi tuna is good, too. Always a fun date night restaurant!

Great service and fantastic food. The salad had the best, freshest greens and tomatoes I can remember. My salmon had a rosemary corn meal wheel, polenta in Italian, the was fried and under the fillet. good roasted veggies. Fine dining in Rome. The space is a bit strange, but all of Rome has a different spin to it.

I really like the eatery. Food consistently good. Had an outstanding elk steak. Really wowed me. It is romantic or business sensible. You can t go wrong here.

Several reviews here mention bad service, but this was not our experience at all. Our waitress was extremely attentive, made sure our glasses were always full, and make some great recommendations. When they read the specials, pay attention because they’re great. My fiancé ordered a mussel and sausage appetizer as her entrée, and I’m not totally sure, but it looked like they served up an entrée sized portion, and it was delicious. I orders the veal scaloppine, which was fantastic as well. If you like spinach, be sure to get the «earthy combo» as a side.

This restaurant offers upscale dining where it is desperately needed. The Blackened Mahi was better than I had a week earlier in Destin, FL, or anywhere else for that matter. The Tiramisu was decadently rich and delicious. While not listed on the menu currently, they will also make fettuccine alfredo that is some of the best I’ve ever had. Don’t go looking for the 99 cent menu. This is quality food and worth the money.

Pretty fancy décor. Good service, but the food just isn’t quite up to par. I had the spinach cream, pancetta pasta, which was okay, but just didn’t have enough seasoning for my taste. The wine list also was not terribly impressive, as it included Sutter Home. It was definitely fancy for Rome though, and the staff was very helpful and attentive. The bread was excellent as well. I would just recommend more flavorful dishes. It is trying so hard to be a fine dining refuge in Rome, but the quality just isn’t there yet.

La Scala is really one of Rome’s treasures… The service is very attentive without hovering, and the waiters are very skillful at describing the specials, and are eager to coach you through the menu… The seafood is always fresh and well prepared, as are the large selection of pasta offerings… The space itself isn’t too large, and in fact it’s warm and tastefully decorated… I have been going to LaScala for years, and will continue to do so… I would recommend a dining experience here to anyone visiting the Rome area…

Went here for a work dinner with a large group of people so they did the dinner buffet style. It was a beautiful location but the food was really not good. They offered salads, and then a chicken marsala breast with a mushroom marsala sauce and a pasta dish with a tomato sauce. What was odd was they didn’t offer a plain pasta to pair with the marsala breast but instead had roasted potatoes (the only really flavorful dish) and steamed veggies. I was really very disappointed with the food, and we were not provided with water pitchers at our tables but were dependent upon the waitstaff to refill our glasses which only happened once in the several hours we were there.
I even tried to flag down the waiters several times to try and get some more water as people were presenting and they never even came all the way back in to the room. That irked me.
The dessert options were an over-​sweet cannoli and these three tiny tarts made of a fruit paste which were not very appetizing.
Based on this experience I’m not sure I’d ever go there on my own.

Certainly a 2 or 3 star location. I’ll go with 2… So, let’s break it down:
Food: 4 star, most certainly. A menu that is not too overwhelming and dishes that satisfy. The scallop appetizer was excellent, veal was great, snapper was great, crab meat pasta was horrible, but then redemption came with an excellent cannoli for desert. Nice work.
Drinks: 3 stars… a relatively straightforward wine selection partnered with a weak beer selection does not really give them much plus or minus there. I did find it strange when the place turned into a bar with a live band at 10pm, and yet their beer selection lacked… may have been the service… ah, yes…
Service: 0 stars… I felt for our server. A bit of a bumbling and goofy guy, but he was giving it his best. A couple points to improve on: bring bread quickly, don’t say the specials while you pour water unless you can do both gracefully (hint: you cannot), speed up on clearing the table, know your beer/​wine selection, be honest when you don’t know something, stop lying that there is a manager available when there clearly is not, and finally each time you go back to the kitchen, wipe the sweat off your face before you come back out. That should get you to 1 or 2 stars. The main reason this place failed on service was the return of a dish that tasted horrible (see «crab meat pasta»), an utter lie that a manager would come talk to us about it, and then the absurd request that we pay for the dish at the end. Listen kid, I saw you talking with the rest of your wait staff about the situation, but do what you know is right, and not what the people around you tell you to do… and you’ll get into the 3 star category quickly. For now, you and your fake manager can take 0 stars in this category.
Ambiance: 1 star… This place is quite casual. In fact, there were a bunch of folks from a tennis league there that evening that hadn’t changed from the court… yes, it is that casual. Flip flops and a tank top would probably fly (if that’s the way you fly), but otherwise, you can keep it to jeans and not feel out of place at all. The interior is badly in need of an update, and overall the place seems to be a great candidate for «Restaurant Impossible» or some other makeover show.
There you have it… 4 categories, 8 total points… 2 star place. Get your customer service in order and a bit of a makeover and that old «la scala» magic can come right back. For now… skip it.

One time, I brought a piece of pizza in a box to the bar and the bartender got yelled at because of it. I drank 700 beers that night, I’m sorry to bartender Perry for both things.

Easily the best meal I’ve had since moving to Georgia from Philadelphia five years ago. It’s quite a bit more expensive than other offerings in the area, but you can’t compare apples to oranges… La Scala is a cut above the other restaurants in Rome. The menu spans all types of food including pasta, steaks, chicken and seafood as well as a huge appetizer selection. If I have anything to complain about, it’s that there may simply be too many things to choose from… perhaps a simpler menu might actually make for an easier time making a selection. Service was prompt, professional and still friendly and relaxing. My wife and I enjoyed our dinner and will be looking forward to our return,

Woohoo! As good as it gets! nuff said! Chef Zane is inspiring, service always setting the standard… La Scala is a Roman tradition… so when your in rome… do as romans do… dine La Scala… tell them chef Markoh sent you!

I went here for dinner tonight and it was delicious. I enjoyed the Pasta Antonio, which had pancetta and spinach in a cream sauce. The staff was very friendly and overall I really enjoyed myself. A great first meal in Rome!

This is really your only upscale dining option in Rome, but it is lovely. On a street where the bars and restaurants change names every 6 months, La Scala has stayed around because it offers something sorely lacking on Rome-​an adult dining option. Plus, after you’re done being classy you can walk 20 feet to the bar and drink, smoke (after dining hours only) and enjoy local tunes.
I’ve had so many awful dining experiences in Rome that I’ll gladly pay extra to know I’m getting a meal that isn’t frozen, fried, and made by a 14 yr old. If you’re taking out parents, an employer, etc., I highly recommend just dropping the extra dough and relaxing to some Vivaldi in the dining room rather than risking hair-​in-​your-​food catastrophe elsewhere.
