Great place for Japanese groceries shopping.
Owner is a nice chat and he is usually around answering questions for those curious about items sold or preparing delicious Japanese cuisine items such as sushi, etc.
A family run business that has been in the same place for decades.
Many others have come and gone.
They are doing well because of the way the customers are treated and the quality of the items sold. A great asset for the Rockville community.
The shop can be accessed from the back of the strip mall with its own parking space or if parked in the front of the mall near the Temari café then you can use the access stairs on the right side of the building.
It is right next to the Audi dealer just past the golf court entrance.
Owner became an old friend of mine, but this is not a biased review.

Very expensive. Not much selection. Better off ordering stuff from the internet stores such as Marukai.

Authentic. It’s a grocery store… Not much to say. Stop eating out, buy from here and try your hand at home tonight.

I absolutely love this little place. Recently discovered it and I’ve already been here with friends and family about 4 times now. Quality products, and friendly staff. Seems to be family run as well which makes me happy. Great atmosphere and nice to support a small business!

Talk about a pleasant surprise. Stumbled across Maruichi after going to the hardwood place next door. I honestly had no idea there was Japanese population in Rockville. Not the best selection I’ve seen when it comes to Jap Markets, but it sure is a helluva lot more than nothing at all. I agree what other ppl are saying about finding similar items at H-​mart for less. At the same time, I gotta give it 3 stars for convenience, as it’s only a hop, skip and jump away to jap snacks, frozen novelties, ramen, beer, etc. Mochi, Mochi!

Prices are high. Selection is mediocre. Not much in terms of prepared foods. It’s on the top floor of a dying shopping center. I would not waste my time going back.

Three and a half stars, located over Temari with plenty of shared parking in the strip lot. Presumably family run, given the pantsless toddler teetering halfway down an aisle before getting whisked away to finish his diaper change. Staff are polite in answering questions.
Slight markup on some items, so it’s best to familiarize yourself with what’s similarly available at the Asian supermarkets nearby since the price labeling varies oddly– more expensive to get a cold beer than the same one at room temp? Bonus points for Shiseido Tsubaki, some makeup tools, some kitchenware, milk tea, red bean/​green tea/​black sesame ice creams, and a small beer/​sake selection tucked around the corner. Bakery rack has been sparse during my late-​day visits. It’s still a decent pit stop when I’m in the mood to make mochi or restock on miso/​furikake/​noodles/​snacks/​frozen essentials.
TLDR: local J-​mart with quadruple the space of Hinata… probably absorbed more business from Daruma’s closing.

This place is excellent. Japanese owned and run. They will order whatever products you need directly from their distributor if they don’t carry it in the store. The price is a bit high, but they provide some amazing customer service I don’t mind paying more.

The people are very friendly here and they have a decent selection, especially if you aren’t planning on making any major meals with any of the stuff there. I usually come here for some coffee, snacks, and look around for some tidbits to add to meals. They also have a little section with things like bento boxes, bowls, etc. I’ve found some amazing deals there, but some of the stuff is priced a bit high.

Yes, this is a Japanese market, but the selection of Japanese goods is lacking and the prices are outrageous. I hate to be so negative about a mom and pop store, but it just did not cut it. I would not recommend coming here for produce, at all. There were more daikons than anything else. The frozen goods had frostbite, so I can only imagine how long they’ve been in the freezer. I think you can find ALMOST everything here at a local HMart. If you are searching for a very specific Japanese item, it’s worth a shot to check it out, if you don’t mind the $$$.
It’s probably the only Japanese specialty store in the area, so I wish prices were more reasonable!

I started going there for the Parisian bread it’s the tastiest bread I ever had it was soft and pillowy went with all kinds of confiture or jams. I even found the Hello Kitty strawberry jam filled bun it was soooo tasty! Also the best premium grade sushi rice really the top notch type I was impressed. The various types of furikake sprinkles were also available at the store. The fermented menma — yum! I also loved the reasonably price matcha chocolates and cookies or the pocky sticks with matcha! It’s a fantastic store!

While Maruichi is a bit small, for a grocer specializing in Japanese cuisine and ingredients, it doesn’t get any better. It is located on the top floor of the Talbott Center (note: park on the upper parking lot behind the storefronts to avoid a walk).
Maruichi carries candies, rice, nori, sweets, coffees, drinks, and so many authentic Japanese staples for the kitchen it can make your head spin, especially if you’ve never heard of most of these things before. They even have a section with Japanese language periodicals, sake and beer from Japan, and a selection of rice cookers and other appliances.
I personally love to stop in for a Ramune or canned coffee, and sometimes I like to satisfy my sweet-​tooth with some Pocky. Maruichi, however, is a great gem for those looking for hard-​to-​find ingredients for some traditional Japanese cooking.

Small, very limited selections and pricy. The store is at the corner on the second floor of a strip mall. Most of items are junk food. What’s to like?

They have Unique ice creams, pops and mochi in frozen section only found in Japan.
Japanese condiments galore.
Feels like a TOkYO Mart… tight, clean and organized.
Check it out… nothing to lose.

I’m a regular at LA Mart, but I really wanted to get my hands on more Japanese condiments and other things. This store is on the second floor of the shopping center, above Tamari Café. They are closed on Tuesdays.
The store is kind of small but neat and organised. It is not cramped at all. We went on a Monday, and a lot of stuff was missing off the shelves, so maybe Wednesday is a better day to shop there. I did not spend as much as I was expecting to, but I did get some dashi soup base, oyster sauce, and flavoring sauce. I also grabbed some green tea pocky, which I have had a hard time finding. They did have Japanese Kit Kats, but they were not in any interesting flavors. I really wanted to try some wasabi chocolate, but they didn’t have that either.
They have an area with sake and beer, both room temperature and cold. They also carry plum wine. There is also an area where they keep warm cans of coffee which is neat.
They sell fish eggs in the freezer section, but I didn’t see any salmon roe. One odd thing I purchased there were free range, cage free, fertilized eggs which were quite expensive. The beauty section was not that interesting to me, but they do have creams, shampoos and other things from Japan that others might like.
The man at the cash register was very kind, he was probably the owner. If you own a canvas shopping bag, bring it with you to avoid the 5 cent bag charge.
Overall, this is a nice store, but a lot of the items there I can buy at LA Mart which is much closer to my home. I will return if I am in the area again.

Maruichi is very small, but it does contain rare ingredients and goods you might not find in other Asian grocery stores.
Japanese snacks are bountiful here, as are condiments and spices. Dried goods and non-​perishable goods are also clutch.

Great selection of sakes and ucc coffee in can. Japanese condiments, noodles, tofu, candiy bars, tea sets etc etc…
I wasn’t able to find my mallows but nonetheless this place is worth visiting if you are in the area.
Prices are a bit on the high side.

How the heck did they cram so much Japanese goodness into one shop, without it feeling all crammed-​like and claustrophic-​ish?

I had to go way up on «The Pike» for this store, but it was worth it. There is parking in the front and back, but the entrance is actually on the side of the building that is just behind the Rockville Pike side.
Maruichi carries tons of candies, snacks, rice and other Japanese food staples. When I saw the slab of salmon in the small back deli area, I was tempted to purchase the fish for just a little over $ 6, but then got a little nervous that I might end up in the hospital while attempting to prepare my own sashimi at home.
I gots no sushi skillz other than eating it!
