History
Established in 1984.
Born December 1st, 1945, Masuo was the youngest of five in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Upon graduating high school in 1964, he quickly found employment as a chef for the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo. He stayed for the next 5 years working at the various restaurants within the hotel. In 1969, an opportunity for employment in the U.S. became possible through the Benihana chain of restaurants. Having always aspired to work abroad (especially in the U.S.), he joined the Benihana family of chefs and moved to San Francisco. From 1969 to 1984, Masuo lent his talents to various Benihana locations across the United States, including Portland, Boston, and New York City. He settled down in Lincolnshire, IL as the Benihana executive chef for several years. Having always dreamed of opening his own restaurant, he started to scout various cities in the Midwest for a good location. He chose Rockford as the ideal place for his vision. In May of 1984, J.M.K.
