History

Established in 2010.

Located at 75 Marshall Street in the Wadsworth Square/Monroe Avenue neighborhood in the City of Rochester, The Owl House has a rich history. Built in 1867 as a home for the Rochester deputy sheriff, the building was converted into a commercial restaurant in the 1950s and renovated by the current owners. Its unique and inviting décor makes The Owl House an ideal place to gather for good food and conversation.

when we drove by on Saturday we first missed it. The restaurant is in an ‘ordinary’ house — so you have to look twice. We had to wait 5 minutes to be seated so we took a drink at the bar — a French 75 (gin based). Before the drinks were ready we could go to our table on the patio. Sitting outside on a warm summer night was just great. The patio is really nice but with chairs an table more ‘festival’ style — if you do not look for an upscaled place you will love it. Jim our server was very friendly — even the patio was fully seated we had not to wait to long — only two servers were taking care of the guests. There is not a wide range of food for dinner on the menu and they had only one special — a kind of potato soup. My wife had the Crostini with eggplant yogurt and feta cheese — a so called small plate. I had the peanut curry tofu — a so called large plate. To be honest no big different between small and large plates. So if you are really hungry you should order some sides with the large plate or have some starter. But the food is really good and we loved also the choice of vegetarian food. The prices are very reasonable. We finished with sharing a cheese cake — when I remember right Jim mentioned it was gluten free and vegetarian. Overall I would go again.

We met my step son and his GF at The Owl House for brunch this morning and had a fantastic meal. We sat out on the patio which was very nice on this beautiful day. My wife and I both ordered the BVE Burger (beef version) which was recommended to us by my step son. I believe it might be the best burger I’ve ever had. The combo of the Sriracha strawberry jam with the fried onion on one of the best rolls I’ve ever seen none the less eaten was perfect. I opted for the mixed greens for my side and chased it all down with a extremely good Bloody Mary. My step son had the chicken and waffles and it looked amazing (he said it was). I can’t wait to go back and try some other things they have to offer.

Just had lunch at the Owl House today … Again … Amazing food, excellent service and welcoming atmosphere … Today I had the peanut curry wrap with chicken … Man you can not beat the flavored and freshness !! Don’t judge this book by its cover!!!
Looks like a normal house, but walk in and Whoa! The food is beyond wildest dreams for a foodie or simpleton! The cocktail menu is unbelievable. Specials were definitely great.

I saw a lot of great reviews and pictures on Unilocal and definitely had to come and witness this place for myself. The only minor cons I have with this place are the chips are no bueno, and I can’t pinpoint whether our server was rude, overly-sarcastic, hated us, hated herself, or all four.
Being a vegan, it’s hard to find places that have GOOD food. What I love about Owl House is that despite their menu being small, almost everything could easily be turned vegan by substituting the meat and adding vegan mayo. We got the buffalo cauliflower and it was delicious! We also got BVE burgers (one chickpea patty and one beef) and the sauce was really good!
TLDR: Good food, vegan friendly.
OH AND GET THE CHEESECAKE BECAUSE IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

When you first walk in, there is a cute little bar. Immediately you see first vegetables and mixes they use for the drinks. We sat outside which was so cute with a little garden. I got a drink that was their special for the night, a Moscow mule with fig-infused vodka. It was delicious and refreshing. For a starter, we got the cauliflower buffalo wings. Best part of the meal. Comes with a delicious broccoli slaw. I got the Napoleon. It was alright. I just wish the eggplant was seasoned too. Overall, loved the place.

It’s a very cute restaurant with nice outdoor seating and hip interior. The cauliflower wings were amazing! I like spicy food but my friend said they were a little too hot for her. I didn’t like my entrée, it was the pasta meal, the texture wasn’t right and it was very bland. The Napoleon dish was delicious. Staff was attentive and nice. Have a good beer selection.

I love the Owl House for a few reasons.
It has options for all dietary needs. You can order vegan or gluten-free, and if you want meat, you can get that too. Win-win for errrbody. This includes a separate fryer for celiac peeps. That is not something that is offered at many places.
The cocktails and beer taps are always wonderful. Crafty, crafty.
They try to keep it local. It isn’t ridiculously priced, but the food is made from higher quality ingredients, and the presentation is always nice
The guy who answered the phone to take my reservations for Mother’s Day was ridiculously pleasant.
I ordered the Salmon Benedict, and it was so filling and delicious, a wonderful meal for brunch. My brother had the Chicken and Waffles, topped elegantly with fruit. He said that the chicken was cooked to perfection. My mom had the classic burger (they have bean ones too!), on GF bread with spring greens on the side. Their mimosas were $ 7.
The food took awhile to come out, but it was brunch, we came to hang anyway. I wouldn’t recommend coming here if you are on your way to a movie, and you need to be somewhere, but other than that, Owl House is a solid place to order quality food that meets everyone’s needs.

The food was fantastic. A little heavy on the salt, otherwise delicious. My beef on chadder and jalapeño bubble bread was awesome. Not the most tender beef, but the flavor won my heart. My Mom had the beef on their home made gluten free bread. She loved every bite — even the next day she was raving over the leftovers that were brought home. I will be picking her up a loaf of the bread in the near future. The waitress says it is about $ 7 or $ 8 depending on the type.
I will be back. NOt only because it will feed anyone with any diet in our group, but because it tastes great!
One heads up. If stairs are an issue, make sure you call ahead and reserve first floor seating.

Only have been here twice but I am obsessed. First for brunch and then for dinner. The pork belly Benedict was so good! And their rosemary fries are a must no matter what time of the day it is. For dinner I had the roasted eggplant which is a vegan dish. I actually really enjoyed it as much as I love seafood and meat. The service there is just an extra plus

I have never had a bad meal here, and after having been half a dozen times that’s saying something!
The façade is a little intimidating for those of us who are suburban dwellers, but it was so worth stepping out of my comfort zone.
The first time I visited I had the BVE Burger, and it won my heart. The meat was fantastically seasoned, and the sriracha-strawberry jam rocked my world.
The next time I visited I ordered the gluten free Autumn Crostini and the Mac and Cheese with seasonal greens. I loved the crostini, and while I’m not gluten free, my sister is, and I wanted to be able to share with her. It was incredible. One of my favorite appetizers probably ever. My sister is also vegetarian, and while I am a serious meat-lover, I wanted to pick a meatless option out of respect to her, so I went with the mac and cheese. I was pleasantly surprised by how multi-dimensional the dish was, and I found that I didn’t even miss the meat in my dish, which is a huge compliment.
In the subsequent visits I alternated between the BVE burger and the Mac and Cheese again, and I have ordered the Crostini again as well.
We’ve got another dinner planned there at the end of the month, and I’m going to try and order something new, but it’s hard breaking from my favorites. We’ll have to see!
My one and only complaint is with one of the servers. I’ve had him more than half of the times I’ve visited, and every time I feel like he is rushed and aloof, and rather short. I don’t know if this is just his personality, but if I didn’t love the food so much it would definitely be harder to overlook.

To be honest, I had higher expectations for this place after hearing so many good things about it. We were seated right away but waitress was forgetful about drinks. The food was good but not as amazing as I had heard. Both of the times i’ve been here my potatoes were burnt. I did enjoy my first Chicken & Waffles experience here and would come back for more. Very interesting combination of flavors (Chicken, waffle, sriracha-strawberry jam, arugula, syrup, fruit) but it tasted great!
Overall good and I would like to give this place another chance.

It started off as a one star… almost walking out experience. The «host» was filling in for the bartender, there were seats open. It took about 20 minutes to get seated. As we waited three staff were served their brunch at the counter. It ended as a 5 star brunch food experience and Amanda our waitress was very friendly and attentive.

The staff was friendly with quick service for how busy it was. They also have a lot of GF and Vegan options. I’ve had sandwiches both times — yum, yum!

Pros:
* Serves Meat as well as Vegan, Vegetarian (good options for all)
* Excellent drink options, including wine, good selection of draft/bottled beer, cocktails and aperitifs
* Interesting food combinations, often including vegetables in a way I wouldn’t necessarily think to when cooking for myself/others
* It’s located in a converted house so it has kind of a neat atmosphere/décor
Cons:
* The food itself seems good-not-great and is a bit pricier than it seems like it should be. No one in our party disliked their meal but nobody was really «wow”-ed
* Can be difficult to find street parking nearby
* We were asked to move to the bar after finishing our meal to make room for the next reservation. Kind of understandable on a busy Friday evening but soured an otherwise good experience, particularly when it took a while for the meal to even come out of the kitchen.

Friend took me here for the first time tonight and the hype payed off. The ambience was in the old house was so pretty and relaxing and the waitstaff was pleasant and attentive.
I ended up ordering the small plate flatbread special wish had mushrooms and a garlic basically tofu-ricotta spread on top. So good my mouth is still watering. For my main meal I zucchini roulade (zucchini stuffed with the wild mushrooms and a tofu ricotta with a Sauce and served with polenta fries) and it didn’t disappoint. I wasn’t going to get desert until he said it was a vanilla cake with peanut butter caramel frosting and all I can say is that I was ready to order another slice to take home. It was so good I could have devoured the entire slice alone.
Will definitely go back here again.

I’m quite sad to have to give such a low star rating to my meal here. Now, I love the ambience. It feels like you’re eating in someone’s historic house. There is a bar and some seating on the first floor, but the back patio is nice, as is the second floor, which offers a cozier place to dine. Our server was wonderful, however it was really the food here that I had issues with here.
1. Butternut squash soup: It’s a bit pricy for what it was… a small cup with two slices of bread. It was $ 7. But overall, enjoyable.
2. Buffalo cauliflower: I was so excited to try this, but we actually had the waiter take this dish away. He took it off our bill. I thought that although there was a lot of cauliflower with generous portions, we literally could not eat it. The Buffalo flavor was a little overwhelming, but it was really the level of salt that made this dish unpalatable. The cauliflower was also a little overdone, losing it’s crunch.
3. Zucchini roulade: This dish also sounded amazing, but when it came out, it had the same fatal flaw as the cauliflower: salt. WAY too salty. The mushroom was wrapped in the zucchini, and the tofu ricotta was decent. We also couldn’t finish this dish.
4. Crispy Ssam tofu: Creative concept. Crispy tofu was good, but again, the salt level was crazy. Could not finish this either. Shame because the flavors were actually decent.
In any case, I would love to try some of this stuff again with maybe 50% less salt, but it was just consistently too salty.

HEY-YO! It’s brunch time! Finally posting an update after coming in on a Saturday to check out the other good stuff I’ve heard about. A buddy and I came in without making reservations for some weekend goodies. No less, I got there after my friend who said there was a little trouble getting seated because a few more patrons came before me. But we were able to sit at the only 2 available stools at the bar and then we moved to a table once it became available.
Like every other responsible adult, I ordered the Bloody Mary. If one is made in-house, I shall try. I love a good variety of styles and Rochester has its share of places to indulge in them. The Owl House makes a good spicy and earthy mix that was delishiz.
For brunch we ran out of options due to the popularity of the breakfast choices. I managed to snag one of the last Breakfast burrito with sausage and the optional avocado –um, EFF YEA! It was served with field greens that were lightly coated in a vinaigrette. IDK what Owl House does with their field greens. They are so simple, light and majestic. I can eat them everyday!
The service was spectacular compared to my first visit. I wish I knew what the daily specials are so I can plan my next visit accordingly.
