About Us

Sweet Island Yogurt is the brainchild of Bill Brandreth and Larry Winkelmann.

The concept was developed during a motorcycle trip to Tennessee. They wanted to bring the newly popular self-​serve yogurt store to their favorite city of Rochester, Michigan. The business partners did a lot of research before launching Sweet Island Yogurt. Traveling to far away places like Charleston, SC and sampling hundreds of tasty frozen yogurt concoctions along the way, the idea of a «tropical oasis» came to life.

The name says it all, We want this to be a fun place to go, with music, tropical décor, flat screen TV.“

Very clean!!! Owner was there yesterday greeting customers and filling the endless number of toppings. Our children were enamored with all the different flavor combinations and possibilities. The owner was very informative, entertaining and engaging with all of the patrons! 49 cents an ounce is an amazingly fair price! We will definitely be back!

Be careful not to load up too much. I tend to do that and my bowl gets pricey. Lots of choices make it hard though. Very friendly staff too. Always feel welcome.

My top choice for frozen yogurt in the area! I’ve tried almost every frozen yogurt spot and none of them come even close to the quality of Sweet Island.
The owner is awesome. Friendly customer service and comfortable environment to enjoy some yogurt.
The topping selection can’t be beat. From typical granola and fruit to boba and frosted animal crackers.
The flavors don’t taste like chemicals. I love the chocolate and mint.
Not only do they have frozen yogurt, there’s slushies, pies, which are delicious, and frozen yogurt available by the quart. Excellent place to stop after dinner downtown or if you’re like me, I visit just for the yogurt.

Awesome frozen yogurt spot in downtown Rochester! Feeling creative? well then this is the place for you! Build your own creation starting your choice of many different soft serve frozen yogurt flavors. Then move to the condiment table and dress your ice cream with delicious toppings! Weigh it, pay and your on your way. Very tasty frozen yogurt, the only reason for the 4 stars is because the condiments aren’t always so fresh looking. Give it a shot with the family!

I’m never disappointed by this place, but it also never blows me away. There are lots of options in every category, especially the topping category; but quantity doesn’t always equate to quality. I always find the fruits to be less than fresh, and some of the richer toppings (cheesecake, brownie, etc) are more dry than you would expect.
But I’m never upset with the price, the yogurt itself is tasty, and all the syrups and candy options are marvelous. I would say if you’re in the downtown area and froyo, it’s a fine option. In the end, if you aren’t dead set on froyo specifically, I would recommend Dessert Oasis down the street instead.

Awesome DAIRY FREE ice cream/​frozen yogurt. They have several flavors to choose from. Friendly service when you walk in the door. There are lots of dairy free toppings as well. It is only .49¢ an ounce. Downtown Rochester is a super cute place to walk around.

I manage a business here in town and when I wanna treat my employees Sweet Island is alway my place to go. They have an awesome selection of Yogurt and toppings I can always find something everyone will love. Not to mention the helpful and friendly staff! It’s refreshing to walk in to a place where everyone is always smiling.

Love the wide variety of flavors they have here! Also, their topping bar is always fully stocked and the fruit is always very fresh (not frozen!). They also have hot fudge and hot carmel. Yum! So fun to walk downtown and get some ice cream in the summertime.

This place is amazing!!! Great for dessert after dinner downtown. I recommend mixing a couple yogurt flavors and piling on the fresh fruit, nut and chocolate toppings. Great ambiance too. Check it out.

friendly staff. overwhelming ice cream choices. endless topping combinations. $.49 an ounce. boom.
walk in, take a cup (with or without a waffle cone), fill with your desired amount of flavored ice cream/​yogurt, and go crazy with the toppings. weigh it, pay, devour, and wish you would have tried another flavor combo… but that’s how they keep you coming back I assume… it’s a good thing I don’t live near there or I would likely be 600lbs.

Good selection of frozen yogurt and toppings in a fun setting that is different from all the «ultra modern» designs of the «chain» yogurt shops. The fact that they are «self-​service» is a real plus, so you can make your yogurt any way you want it. They recent added a «Flavor selector» that allows you to select different flavors to blend with the vanilla yogurt (Root Beer is really good!). These sections, along with the other flavors, gives lots of choices.
Great place to stop in on a warm summer evening in downtown Rochester.

I was disappointed with the «tart» yogurts, which still seemed awfully sweet. There’s a ton of topping options, though, and their «dairy free» option (vanilla) has a handy little device attached so you can make 6 or 8 different flavors, which is pretty awesome. There’s plenty of parking right behind the building (and there is a rear entrance as well).

I guess this place is alright if you want the same, tired, overly sweet froyo you can get everywhere else or at TCBY. No tart flavors whatsoever. Not even their «tart» keylime was a true tart froyo. Oh and they have custard too. How exciting… not really. You can get custard at 100 other places around the area and now here too. But no good, tart froyo. Yawn… fingers crossed the yogurt city opening up down the way will be better.

Too expensive! You pick your flavor, topping and do everything yourself. There is no customer service and it’s too sterile. I don’t understand the appeal. I would rather go to Maggie Moo’s in the Village Mall just up Walton or even ColdStone off Adams. Just my opinion.

The peanut butter… oh man. It’s so good. The hazelnut is also great (the owner said they use Nutella in it, so there ya go). I like the mini junior mints or chocolate chips but they also have Mochi which is really yummy and unusual. The owner is also a really nice guy.

Nice idea but definitely not as good as Menches. They do not have as many flavors nor as good of specialty flavors either. What they did have was good though. They do have a better specialty topping selection though.
