Kahler Inn & Suites

The hotel is perfectly situated across from the Mayo campus. The rooms are old but clean, the sheets and bedding are great. Stay away from the continental breakfast or stick to cereal, bagels, muffins, and donuts.

I have stayed at many hotels. Some bigger and more grandiose, but none as nice and friendly! The staff here will literally walk you to a destination if you’re not sure where to go. The front desk is so helpful every employee is so nice and we are really enjoying our stay! Can’t imagine we would stay anywhere else when going to the mayo clinic!

We chose the Kahler Inn and Suites for our weeklong visit to the Mayo Clinic due to it’s suite availability and convenient location.
The good side is it was quite comfortable and convenient to Mayo. Our room had two queen beds, a small sitting area and a table, all very useful for an extended stay. It is connected by the Rochester subway system which prevents exposure to the Rochester winter weather and connects directly within 10 minute walk to the Mayo Clinic. Also, covered parking for one car is included in the price. A small, typical continental breakfast is included.
There are several things we were not happy with. The room has a very odd layout with a small wall between the sleeping and sitting/​mini-​kitchen area. The couch was quite uncomfortable to sit on. The bath consists of a tub and toilet with the sink outside of the bath in the sleeping room. Finally, while convenient to the Mayo Clinic, it is on the opposite side of the clinic to the main restaurant and shop area. There are very limited restaurant options on that side of the Clinic. Finally, while clean, it is quite old. Having lived in Germany for several years, the property reminded me of some of the older european hotels.

For the location, price, service this hotel is an excellent choice for travelers visiting Mayo Clinc or Rochester, MN.
The only reason for not 4 stars is this is the only place I’ve used my credit card in the last week and the next day my CC# was stolen. I’m not linking the two but who knows, I haven’t ran a virus scanner on their computers so I’m not sure.
However their rooms are basic budget hotel rooms, the beds are decent and pillows are squishy and they do give you a great nights sleep. The windows open, the bathrooms have excellent flushing haha, there is also a few choices for restaurants/​coffee located inside the hotel.
This hotel also connects to Mayo clinic through a tunnel and is walking distance to just about everything else downtown. They do have a parking garage if your parking, and if you need a cab ask the front desk to hail one for you. Even though the cab companies here suck badly and there is only like 2 in the entire city it feels like.
This hotel is a great choice if you need a quick stay. No hairs on my bed, no dirty bathrooms, clean showers, and no smell. I did a deep search, good luck.

Check in was easy, I was given the choice between a 2 queen room or a king, since I had booked through Priceline. Room was good size and clean. Bed was comfortable, and there were plenty of outlets. Bathroom was small, and shower head low. You can tell that the building is older. Breakfast was not much, waffles, fruit, toast and bagels and cereal. If you are counting on a hearty breakfast, this won’t do. The parking garage has low ceilings, and tight spaces. Every staff member I encountered was friendly and helpful. Overall it was worth the money I paid.

Hotel is fine but watch your credit card bill they like to charge for things you didn’t use, parking, bottled water. It has been 2 months and 5 phone calls and still they haven’t reversed the charges. 1^st call transferred to voice mail no return call. 2^nd call said they would take care of it. 3^rd call said they already took care of it. 4^th call transferred to voicemail rang for 4 minutes no answer. 5^th call said it hadn’t been done and would take care of it. We shall see. Too bad I go to Mayo a lot won’t be staying in a Kahler property again.

I can’t imagine we’ll be staying anywhere else on our visits to Rochester. The rooms were fantastic, great spaces and well laid out. I stay in hotels quite a bit and this may be one of my favorites — at a fraction of the cost. Incredibly quiet, which is always crucial. The staff we spoke with (Angela mostly) was thoughtful and accommodating — she worked with us to get the best rate and always made sure we had everything we needed. It is so refreshing to find a hotel like this, even more so to find one at good rates that also allows for our small dog (which can be so hard to find). The hotel also attached to the Mayo Clinic and as someone who had had major surgeries and health issues, this is the perfect supportive and peaceful environment if that is the reason for your visit. You won’t regret staying here — I look forward to our next visit.

Nice sized room, lots of light (ie, enough lamps to see and not be depressing like the Kahler Grand). Lots of plugs for electronics, which was great. Free ««continental» breakfast that included scrambled eggs, haah browns cereal, pastries, fruit and more. Door is promptly shut at 9:30 am and breakdown of food starts then. Better places for breakfast if you can get out is nearby Pannekoeken or Pescara. Housekeeping excellent. Room always made up by the time we got back to the room, even when we were only gone for a half hour breakfast.
Minor things easily negligible: no computer to print out tickets, but you can go over to Kahler Grand or Residence Inn. No concierge, but front desk can help you. Less expensive than Kahler Grand, larger rooms, free breakfast, accessible in subway level to Mayo Clinic.

Clean, very quiet, newly renovated rooms. Friendly staff. Convenient Caribou Coffee and Jimmy Johns Subs attached below. Just perfect for us with excellent proximity to Mayo. Nice continental breakfast included.

Excellent proximity to Mayo with the skyways, and rooms are clean and adequately sized. We stayed on a night when it was below zero and we actually had to open the windows to cool the room off. It was a sauna even though the thermostat was set at 72. I bumped it down to 68 while we left for dinner and when we came back it was STILL unbearable. Finally decided to turn the whole unit off, well guess what, it kept coming on again anyway!
Staff is moderately friendly, but the check in girl named Kaylee was dreadfully rude.
At 120.00 per night though, I guess you get what you pay for.

I seriously appreciate the Mayo Clinic but every time I come I am once again reminded of the dismal lodging options, especially downtown ie. convenient. Note for this hotel, if you book through them (507−285−9200 or 800−533−1655) you avoid the $ 12/​day parking fee. Limited on site parking but overflow is a block away. Room is adequate but nothing special. The advantage here is location, location, location. It helps when I remember most people who stay here are in town for the Mayo Clinic therefore I can get past the fact that this isn’t a very special hotel.

should have investigated more, but once we were checked in, my husband refused to move. Here are the issues I had:
1. The «pool» is more of a kiddie pool. Maximum depth of three feet, so impossible to exercise in.
2. The whirlpool. Most disgusting one I’ve ever seen. It’s very, very small, making it intimate for two people, impossible for three. Worse was the filth surrounding it. There are these low heating units by it, and no one has cleaned under them in who knows how long. You can’t avoid seeing the filth, it’s at eye level when you sit in it.
3. The continental breakfast was similar to that at girl scout camp. The orange juice was not juice, just some orange colored fluid. At least there were bananas.
4. Bedding. The mattress sheets are just flat, not fitted, so at night they disperse. The blankets were AWFUL. Old, scratchy… Saint Vincent de Paul thrift stores would not sell these.
5. The «diversity» policy advertised by the front desk is a joke, as the rooms feature a prayer and proclamation that the management is devoted to Saint Francis. At least there wasn’t a crucifix in the room.
So why give it three stars?
1. Accessible to the Mayo Clinic skyway.
2. The people working there were friendly and helpful.

My room was clean. It is an older Hotel so don’t expect modern décor. Very small room and to get to it we went through a door than had to turn left to get to our room very cramped area I guess it was part of a suite so if someone had a large family you could open all three doors. But very awkward if someone else is coming out of their room. I got my room on expedia so I guess with the special rate we had to put up with small inconveniences. We had free WiFi. And it is convenient to Mayo right across the street. But since we were going to be at Mayo for 2 weeks we needed to find a cheaper place. So we talked with one of the other patients and they recommended the Econo Lodge so we moved there. Free shuttle if you are worried about parking. We bought a parking ticket that we can use at all the parking ramps it was very reasonable.

You get what you pay for.
We pricelined this hotel for $ 70.
We didn’t know it, but the priceline offer was for a economy room, and by economy they mean a room half the size of the smallest hotel room you’ve ever seen. Full size bed (for two guests), a closet sized room with 3′ x 2′ shower and a toilet, the sink and vanity are on the other side of the room about 4′ away, and a desk.
The staff was nice.
The location to the main Mayo Clinic building was fantastic, just a few steps (and also available via climate-​controlled sky-​way.
I personally will not stay here again, but you do get what you pay for.

December 2011 was my first trip up to Mayo Clinic so I read the reviews of hotels and restaurants on many sites before booking. The locations and prices vary so widely, I had a tough time deciding whether to splurge on a larger chain for almost twice the money, or stay way off the beaten path for a lot less money.
I was going to Mayo alone, so I wanted a hotel that was comfortable, clean and most all, close to Mayo. There are many hotels that are close to Mayo and in fact a couple that are attached by the underground «subway» (which is a pedestrian walkway/​mall.)
I chose the middle ground – not the cheapest but not the most costly and took a chance on Kahler Inn and I am so glad that I did.
My experience at Kahler Inn was great. The room was everything I needed – large enough, tons of pillows, very clean carpets and linens, plenty of towels, a small fridge in the room. The continental breakfast is limited in selection but very abundant. A lot of pastries, oatmeal, whole fruit and bread/​bagels, cereal, but no yogurt or much in the way of proteins. Nonetheless, for a free continental breakfast, it was plentiful, and the seating area in the morning is very cozy and comfortable.
The location could NOT be beat. Although I know a couple of other hotels are also attached to the subway system, I’m going back to Mayo in January and will definitely not try another hotel, I’ll stay with what I know and liked. There is a Caribou coffee in the lobby, as well as a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop. Within a very short walk are lots of restaurants and the Mayo cafeteria. I had very few «needs» from the staff during my stay but the few times I did, they were very friendly and extremely responsive. (For example, I declined housekeeping one day that I was in and out a lot in between appointments and that night I ran low on toilet paper. Housekeeping isn’t available 24 hours a day but when I needed that extra toilet paper at 8pm that night, the front desk sent some up within minutes of my call.)
There is a pool and sort of «rec room» and small workout room, none of which I used during my short stay, but I checked them out and would recommend them for family or kids who have time to spare. (Mayo appointments don’t leave a lot of time for leisure!)
There is free wifi in the room which worked great, and the cable options are enough to keep you entertained when you must be in the room.
If you are not looking for a «luxury» vacation, but a clean, comfortable, reliable hotel in a perfect location for your stay at Mayo, I highly recommend Kahler Inn. I was comfortable, and for me, using a clean bathroom and clean linens seems like a given, but I was more than pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and at home I felt at Kahler Inn.
I did not have a car so I can’t comment about the parking, but I am not able to walk very far and I felt very safe in the pedestrian subway and even venturing out a bit to check out the places within a few blocks of Kahler.
Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again when I return!

Amazing rooms! Really clean and spacious rooms. Having all of the kitchen-​ware was very nice. The bathrooms were also clean. The staff wasn’t noticeably nice or mean, so just average. There’s a Jimmy Johns right downstairs in the lobby. The breakfast is also really amazing, it says continental, but they had biscuits and sausage gravy. It was good. Overall a very lovely stay!

Since I have to visit the Mayo Clinic a couple of times a month, I usually stay at one of the sister hotels: The Kahler Grand Hotel or The Kahler Inn and Suites.
The big benefit of these hotels is that they are connected via underground walkway to the Mayo Clinic complex of buildings. The Kahler Grand is literally right across the street, and the Kahler Inn and Suites is «kitty corner» to the Mayo building.
Both buildings are undergoing aggressive remodeling, so there is a moderate amount of construction evident. The noise level is low to moderate. At one point I stayed in a hotel room that was near construction, and the room had an air purifier and hypo-​allergenic bedding and towels.
Considering their location, the price is good, particularly with the «Mayo Discount.» BE SURE to ask for the Mayo Discount if you are going to the Mayo.
Here is my gripe, and it is kind of a big one. I checked in at the front desk. They told me that the underground parking garage was full and I would need to park in overflow at the Graham Lot across the street. The Graham Lot is a nice facility, but no one explained to me how convoluted the tunnel system was, or recommended that I drop off my baggage first. There is a snowstorm on right now, so I decided to take the underground walkway (subway). I had substantial baggage, and I am here as a patient not a cross-​country competitor.
I went on a very extended trek through the underground maze to find the hotel.
I don’t blame them for needing to use overflow parking, but if someone checks in as a Mayo patient they should offer options for getting to the room. Just dropping off my baggage would have been huge.

So mediocre that it was funny:

Crackled paint on bathroom walls and ceiling
Odd configuration of holes where old chain locks were on the door
Shower that literally went from scalding hot to ice cold every time we showered
Image one television cut the left ¹⁄₈ of image off
Main stairwell was reminiscent of a 1940 Berlin bunker
The hot tub literally had enough room for one person
Whoever answered when «0» was dialed was surprised that we would ask questions
