The owner contacted me and offered an interview for a local job. He was acting as a recruiter.
The information he provided me about the position and the interview was completely inaccurate.
He told me that the position had a starting wage around $ 60,000 a year. There was no starting wage. There is no wage at all. Income was entirely based on sales.
Additionally, he told me, «I know it would be worth your time as they are looking for a number of people for all types of positions.» This was not the case. There were two positions, but they were only hiring for one.
This position was only open to people who have their own laptop computer and their own car which needs to be sturdy enough to drive for hundreds of miles per week in Upstate New York winter evenings. He did not tell me that before the interview.
This position required we work several evenings per week. He did not tell me that. It was sold to me as an office job. This would not have been considered by a parent with small children.
I was told I would be meeting and interviewing with the head of the company. The head of the company was not there. I spoke with a sales associate for 2 minutes. When I asked questions, he said they would all be answered in a presentation and I needed to attend the presentation to learn about the position. That presentation was 90 minutes, in a room with no clock (we were told it would be an hour). The man I had a meeting with was not there, and the interview I had scheduled was not an interview; it was a sales pitch for why I should work for them without base pay.
Literally everything he told me about this job, organization, and «interview» was inaccurate. Between the time I spent communicating with the recruiter, preparing for the interview, driving there and home, and the two hours I spent in their offices, this experience took over 5 hours of my time. A parent with an older car would not have rearranged their workday, and taken the time for this «interview» had they been accurately informed.
It was a bait-​and-​switch. I reached out to the recruiter and the head of the company with feedback on this process, worded as friendly constructive criticism in hopes that my experience was a one-​off or a miscommunication, and neither of them responded to me with any kind of acknowledgement.
It left a very bad taste in my mouth.
