When are they going to clean the locker rooms and sauna? I have been watching a pile of chewed gum, probably 15 pieces, in one of the corners of the mens locker room for over two months waiting and hoping it might disappear. I guess someone else was doing their own experiment to see how long they would stay there. No luck yet. The weights and cardio machines are ok. I wipe everything down before and after I use them because I think that’s the only time they are getting any cleaning. I’m there because it’s cheap, but I’m starting to wonder if they are ever going to clean this place. It’s not like they don’t have any staff but they tend to only stand at the front desk and chit chat.

I admit that I am spoiled because I have spent the better part of my life having access to some of the best health clubs in America, but I have yet to find anything in the Rochester area that is anything more than mediocre. For what you get, Ballys is worth the monthly cost but it is severely lacking in quite a few areas. This particular location has cardio, strength-training, and free weight areas with an aerobics room, spinning room and day care. The cardio area has a sparse amount of recumbent bikes and if a machine breaks down here you can expect it to be several months before anything is done to repair it. There are televisions available for viewing while doing cardio which is nice, but modern gyms have systems that make this a limited and outdated choice. Members at this club have a habit of doing several sets on a strength-training machine and not allowing others to use it until they are done and of not re-racking their weights in the free weight area, both of which are inconsiderate and an inconvenience when trying to do an efficient workout. The interior of the club, locker rooms and bathrooms are not clean at all. There are cobwebs on some of the weight machines, stains on some of the cardio machines, trash inside of lockers, the urinals are often unflushed at best, and the toilet paper is so thin that it is transparent. The club does employ staff, but I have rarely witnessed them doing anything more than sitting at the front desk or chatting; their time could be much better spent cleaning and educating members of the club. An update to my review. I just read the following from a Bally’s representative: «All of our clubs follow a rigorous maintenance schedule.» Rigorous? By whose standards? There are machines in this club that have had dust accumulating on them for months now. When I worked at a health club we literally cleaned every machine and every bench at the end of every night, and our club was over 60,000 square feet in size with significantly more equipment than this club has. They also claim to have the«latest equipment»? I’m sorry, but a health club that I worked at in the 90’s had more advanced equipment at that time than this club has today! Bottom line– Bally’s is an acceptable option by Rochester standards, but falls far short when compared to clubs on a national level.
