The Sweeney Art Gallery is an artistic laboratory that engages diverse audiences with exhibitions and programs that are committed to experimentation, innovation, and the exploration of art in our time. The Sweeney places a special emphasis on inspiring projects that explore new ideas and materials and re-​envision the relationship between art and life. At the center of the Gallery’s mission is an appreciation for the role of artists developing the intellectual and cultural life of society. Located off campus in downtown Riverside, Sweeney Art Gallery is committed to bringing the most challenging art to the widest possible audience. The gallery is located about 60 miles east of Los Angeles in downtown Riverside.

History

Established in 1963.

Established on the University of California– Riverside’s campus in 1963, the Sweeney moved to UCR ARTSblock in April of 2006 and plays a special role in contributing to the artistic spirit of the campus and the community at large.

Meet the Manager

Tyler S.

Manager

Tyler Stallings is the Artistic Director for the Culver Center of the Arts and Director of the UC Riverside Sweeney Art Gallery.

Stallings was chief curator at Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, Calif. from 1999 to 2006. Prior to that, he was the director of programs at Huntington Beach Art Center and has also worked for the city of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department at the Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Art Park and in the Public Art Division. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992 from the California Institute of the Arts.

In addition to leading the Sweeney Art Gallery, Stallings plays a significant role in the development of the new UCR ARTSblock.

His curatorial projects focus on contemporary art and popular culture, with a special emphasis on the exploration of identity, technology and urban culture. Most of his exhibitions have been accompanied by major catalogues.
