History

Established in 1986.

Rutgers Landscape & Nursery was founded in 1986 by 19 year old Jim Brophy,

who began it all with a push mower, some leaf rakes, a group of friends from Rutgers University, and his mother’s 1971 Chevy Impala. The Met’s won the World Series that year, so Jim thought that anything was possible!

Jim had worked several part-​time jobs in landscaping while he attended Rutgers University, and developed an interest in plants and the outdoors. Determined to improve the professionalism of this industry, and seeing a need for high quality, dependable landscaping, he decided to start his own business.

I don’t review very often, but I recently had such an amazing experience. I went in with just an idea of a perennial garden that I wanted to build, and the saleswoman was absolutely amazing. She took my idea, and made several positive suggestions. Based on the environment and drainage, a few of the plants and shrubs that I originally wanted would not have worked, and most likely would not have survived. She made several sensible changes, and still kept me under budget. Now I have a beautiful perennial garden that I will enjoy for years to come.

I had a similar experience to one of the other reviewer’s. I was concerned with drainage when installing a patio. I was told everything would be fine and I had nothing but problems. When I called, I was told the drainage issue could be fixed and I would need to pay more. The designer seemed inexperienced and not knowledgeable. I do not recommend them, unless you know exactly what you want and how it should be done. You cannot leave anything up to the company as they are not experts in the field.

Used their landscape designer and plants to replace damage from superstorm Sandy, also needed advice on drainage. The landscape design is rather plain doesn’t look that nice, and the concept didn’t really fit our home. The drainage solution made the problem worse. They didn’t respond to repeated calls to return to fix problems. The landscape designer seemed inexperienced and was more interested in selling things than making an attractive design that fit into an existing landscape. Would not recommend. Plants are alright quality, if you are do-​it-​yourself.

Excellent selection of trees and shrubs and very helpful staff. We bought most of our landscape plants here… they will deliver and plant. Look for the 30% off sales in early spring and late summer. Prices are not the lowest but the quality of their stock is some of the best I’ve seen. Thanks to Fran who helped us on our most recent trip. We will definitely be back. One additional tip… This place is on the northbound side of rt. 31⁄202 my gps keeps trying to send us through back roads to the southbound side.
