I was very happy when I first got to Matera’s to learn that they carry some good compost. That was completely overshadowed by the fact that they sold me soil with fertilizers and water gel in it and insisted that it was organic. I specifically questioned it when they brought it over and they assured me it’s all organic.
They are dishonest and do not care about your actual needs, just another sale.

I drove from the city willing to pay the $ 13 toll because I’d heard Matera was great. In fact, I was pretty darn excited to pick up some new plants. Alas, while they have a good selection of trees and shrubs for suburban landscaping, I was a little disappointed with their selection of indoor plants. The owner informed me they were waiting for the next day’s shipment, but that wasn’t quite enough of a consolation prize for me.

I just called them and YES! they carry straw bales!!! In the Spring!!!
Ever since I saw the Straw Bale Gardening article in the New York Times I’ve been calling garden centers near the city… and nobody carries straw bales (except at Halloween!).

Matera carries a variety of herbs for my in-​home garden. They’ve got a slew of pottery, soil and some lawn mower machinery. Last year’s crop of spring basil lasted all year long! Tasty.
