I took them a damaged hard drive to see if they could recover data. I chose a local outfit because I felt better dealing with a person face to face. The actual store is a bit dingy and piled up with with stacks of equipment lying around. I was a little put off by the fact that they charge $ 125 up front, whether they can recover or not, while some of the mail order places do not charge you unless they can recover, and, sure enough, the money turned out to be a total loss. They told me that although they could see the files, they could not recover anything. They insisted that THE ONLY other option was to send it to a $ 1500 to $ 2000 clean room. I took a chance and sent it to $ 300 Data Recovery in California, since they didn’t charge up front and claimed to be able to provide services in between a clean room and a software only recovery. They got 99% of EVERYTHING off the drive for me. They were also critical of Unitek for having put the drive into a computer and spun it up, which is what Unitek they told me they did. Unitek was perfectly friendly and they did try, but I’m not sure their hard drive recovery experience is as strong as they claim, and their advice about a clean room turned out to be erroneous. I wish I had saved the $ 125
