The Kitchen Table Bistro

Amazing amazing amazing. The food was fabulous (the fish special and the hangar steak) and the dessert… Omg, worth all the pilates classes!!! Definitely the best restaurant in the area!

We celebrated a birthday and graduation with family at Table Kitchen Bistro. We were warmly greeted and immediately seated at our table. Our waitress was friendly and warm and knowledgeable about the wine list and menu. She had nice suggestions about the menu and was very accommodating. We had a most delicious meal and dessert and everyone loved what they ordered. Thank you!

I like Kitchen Table because it’s in Richmond, and Richmond is a fun little town to go to, or at any rate, I like Richmond. I like it because it’s located in a very old farmhouse. The location isn’t awesome, or at least it feels a bit odd because it’s close to the highway and right on a main road, but when you’re inside you never notice that. Another reason I like Kitchen Table is the food can be very good. I’ve pretty much always loved my savory dishes there. Very few times I’ve had less than very very good savory plates. The desserts have been consistently disappointing for me, which is surprising because I think one of the owners is a pastry chef (?) I may be off on that.
The owners are in the process of selling the business. Or they are closing it. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on. I will miss this restaurant. I didn’t go there frequently, but when I did go out was always a special occasion. Always a treat. The room with the bar was my favorite. I’ve been told that the bar makes/​made some fabulous drinks. If you have the time and can get a table before it closes you should definitely pay a visit. The braised meats are especially wonderful.

Classy ambiance. Local ingredients. Yummy drinks. Since the restaurant itself is up for sale, we wanted to check out one of our favorites together again before the inevitable.
Went for dinner with a friend on a Thursday night and sat at the bar, located in one of the rooms further in the back. There are plenty of seating options in the many tabled rooms, there must be three or four (including the bar), and it looks like there is café style seating out by the main entrance in the garden. The bartender was friendly and happy to make reservations as well as find out the answers to our many questions about the food, secret ingredients, preparation, etc. With four Vermont beers on tap, I settled into a Drop-​In Brewery ESB and my friend got a delightful concoction of Bar Hill Gin, grapefruit, and toasted rosemary — a truly elegant taste! A round of appetizers later (the mussels (sauce was incredible!) and steak tartare (complete with quail egg)), we started in on our main entrees: Grilled Steak with frites and the House Ground Burger. All cooked to a perfect medium rare. We finished off the night with house blended ice cream (four spice vanilla!).
It was a delightful evening from drinks to dessert; I’m hopeful for the next phase of the restaurant but until then, get in and try out a dish while you can!

This has become an old stand by for us as we are never disappointed with what the Kitchen Table has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me how this small restaurant in northwestern Vermont manages to provide and prepare seafood that tastes as if it had come fresh off of the boat. Last night, my wife and I shared an appetizer of grilled octopus that rivaled anything I have eaten at some of the best seafood restaurants on the coast of Maine. I also enjoyed a hake entrée with sides of polenta and ratatouille that easily ranks as one of the better meals I have had in a while. The great thing about this place is the varied menu. If you don’t like seafood, there are plenty of other delicious offerings. For example, my wife absolutely loved the mushroom stuffed cavendish quail that she ordered. Suffice to say, we were a bit disappointed to hear that this restaurant is for sale. All I can say is that any new owners are going to have some very big shoes to fill as Steve and Lara have truly created something special.

Atmosphere is wonderful in old farmhouse with small rooms. Seems to be well managed. But. Waitress needs an attitude adjustment. Never smiled. Acted aloof, as if she was doing diners a BIG favor! Don’t order the Cesear salad unless you want to pay $ 10 for a few pieces of lettuce.

Great meal again. I had the roast pork shoulder with sweet potatoes and collard greens. Melt in your mouth tender pork, fresh collard greens, not overly seasoned, better than I’ve had most places in the south. Peter had very tender sirloin steak and fries. This is a must stop for us when we come back to Vermont for visits. If you’re here in the spring they serve fiddlehead ferns. Yum!

Reliable and good, and still one of my favorite restaurants, but could use some re-​energizing. Clearly the chefs know what they’re doing so I’d love to see some inventive interesting side dishes instead of the more predictable root purées and braised greens. And I’m really dying for some new mains, not just the same 6 kinds of protein I always see on the menu season after season. Everything is delicious but not exciting, if that makes sense.

Friendly atmosphere. Spectacular food. Visiting from Maryland and happens to be a birthday weekend for this place friend’s say is great. We got 4 people and get 5 meals passing plates and it was amazing. Brilliant mix of flavors on every plate. Do try this with high expectations…

Vermont really does right with all these farm to table restaurants, locally sourced, organic non gmo cooked food.
I was here with a large group of 23 people and surprisingly the food was nice and fresh as it came out and had good flavor. Lacked salt for my beet appetizer but was nice and light. The steak was nice and juicy but the side onions were overcooked and did not quite compliment the dish.
Star of the show was the crème brûlée which was fabulous. Rich, buttery, great consistency. Great little place in Vermont.

I wish the server could have been friendlier. I found she was seem to be rushing us. I also wish they had more options. I normally only post positive but felt the owner should be aware. HB.

So so good, the best food we had in a long time. Posting this on one of the most frigid nights of the year, we entered a cozy room with a roaring fire, white tablecloths and napkins. The wine list is very eclectic, we had a nice Malbec and pinot noir while checking the menu. We asked about desert first, that determines if I will order an appetizer, because there was nothing spectacular we ordered a venison ragout with wild onions and ricotta gnocchi, spectacular appetizer. My husband had the steak with tiny potatoes sautéed perfectly and steamed kale all dressed in a red wine sauce. My husband likes his steak rare and said it was perfect. I had the short ribs with sautéed kale and buttermilk mashed potatoes. My dish was perfect comfort food. We had no room for desert but we had some of their home made ice cream, yum. For a high end restaurant their portions are generous.
The bread, Red Hen with their excellent butter has to be mentioned.
The service classy, nice, friendly. Nice for a couples night out or go with a group of friends.

I’m never disappointed! Great place, great food and great service. This time we had a large group of friends with us. The beet and chèvre app was amazing, gnocchi so light and fluffy and we never go wrong with dessert.

We always make a stop here when visiting VT. This is an old favorite specializing in local foods prepared deliciously! The mussels are to die for, and the local beers delish!

Went to the Kitchen Table in a party of 6. We were not an «easy» bunch for the waitress on this Friday after Thanksgiving. My sister is gluten and dairy-​free. My brothers-​in-​law are lightheartedly inebriated, and my mom almost never leaves the house. I was the only NORMAL one.
The décor is simple and calming. The staff are accommodating and very friendly, and the food was terrific. The only hitch (to the elder bro-​in-​law) was that they do not serve espresso.
I had the hake (could’ve sworn it was pronounced HA-​key, but it’s hake, like rake). Two ordered the pork (yum), and the gluten-​free sister had the hanger steak (if you order rare, it will be rare!). No entrée was left unfinished.
Dessert was interesting. Two of us ordered the pudding which was served in a neat little mason-​jar type thing. Yum. The younger (balder) brother in law ordered what we all thought would be crème brûlée with cookies. Alas, it was just two little, but delicious, cookies.
I plan on returning. They’re barely ever open, but the food and feel are so good that you’ll find the time to dine on their schedule.

Seriously after this trip to Vermont. and the incredible scenery, nice people, and good food… I may need to re-​think this living in Maryland thing.
Wow! This place is a rare find off an interstate. We actually found it on Unilocal,and if you are headed to Stowe, then it’s on your route. It is vintage farmhouse at its finest! I loved everything, down to the plates and napkins.
Our table had the a salad to start, with freshly shaved parm, then we each had a Ribeye. Might I say that tarragon sauce was divine! I asked for second ramekin of it. The steak was perfectly cooked and served on a bed of onion/​squash gratin. Someone else at my table ordered Hake. which she loved.
The desserts were all delicious with a lovely presentation. We sat at our table for about 2.5 hours. This is the type of restaurant where you linger, order more wine, talk, and eat slowly. No one is in a hurry here… which was fine by me.
This is probably not ideal for kids, so enjoy an adult night out and you will be pleased.

Love their commitment to local ingredients and quality, interesting food, but we were disappointed with the current menu and the service on last night’s visit. Service was very slow at all stages. We ordered a first course to share, salads and main courses. The salads arrived before the first course and we had to ask not to receive the first course until we finished our salads bc there was no room on our very tiny deuce table. The octopus was perfection, as was my Caesar. The tiny quail main dish was tasty. Gnocchi with pork neck, way too salty, and gnocchi were mushy and formless, disappointing. We miss the old menu which had more mains and fewer small plates. Good. No longer great.
UPDATE: although it took him some real detective work to find me, I received a follow up call from the manager after posting this mixed review. He was open and said everything that needed to be said. I stand by my observations, But I really appreciate that the management cares so much they followed up in this incredibly individual manner. Well handled. We will be back.

I have always had AMAZING top notch food here with great service. Great place to go on a romantic date or out to celebrate a special occasion!
The Menu consists of local in season offerings, there is a great wine list and don’t leave without trying their amazing deserts!

I drive past this place everyday on the way home and decided to pop in on a lark. The entire meal was delicious. I had a steak with homemade fries and a lot of veggies prepared in different ways. Whatever they can source locally they do. This trend is really taking off and unfortunately only in restaurants that charge date-​night prices. The real star here is the entirely homemade deserts. I have never had so much trouble deciding. I ended up with the poundcake with lime glaze, raspberry reduction, and honey ice cream. HONEY ICE CREAM IS MY OVERLORD. If they ever find a way to mass produce this and sell it commercially, I will go broke buying it.
The food is epic, where they lose a star is in being really antiquated in their business. They don’t do separate checks for some reason… they say it’s because of being analog but I don’t really buy it. They also don’t take some credit cards, which is okay in some businesses, but for the prices they’re charging, I shouldn’t have to quibble with them over discover card. It doesn’t make them quaint, it makes them a hassle, and something like this will tarnish as perfectly lovely dining experience.

This has a lovely atmosphere for a special-​occasion dinner, and the service is impeccable. Nevertheless, I feel the food at the more-​casual Farmhouse is better. Like the Farmhouse, it offers locally-​sourced food in straightforward-​but-​well-​executed standards.
(And for the record, I think they should switch names. The Farmhouse has a great community feel to it, and the Kitchen Table is actually an old farmhouse in RIchmond, right were it starts getting rural as you go east from Burlington. But I digress.)
We started with a cheese plate ($ 9), which had two great offerings from two Vermont cheese makers, Vermont Butter and Cheese and Thistle Hill. (Unlike The Farmhouse, you don’t get to pick your own from a list.) It come with grilled, locally made Red Hen bread (just like at The Farmhouse!) The chicken liver pâté ($ 9) was quite good… but, um, well, not nearly as good as The Farmhouse’s pâté. Same for the nevertheless excellent house-​made spiced apple butter.
(Yes, I know: the Farmhouse is becoming like your mother’s friend’s daughter about whom you were always hearing from your mother. «Sheila made the cheerleading squad! Sheila got all A’s! Sheila won her cello competition! Sheila just got a scholarship! Sheila’s mother must be soooo proud!» I’m sorry Kitchen Table; I know it is terrible to be always compared to your mother’s friend’s daughter, but (like my mother) I just can’t help myself. But if you worked at it just a *little* harder, like Sheila supposedly does, I’m sure you could be *just* as good!)
For our meal, we got a wonderful piece of locally raised pork (about $ 26, smaller portion for $ 14) with this addictively outSTANDINGly crispy herbed spaetzle — but sadly, the chard it came with was inedibly salty. And I do so love my chard…
I do love that many of their entrees are offered as smaller portions for smaller prices. I think the $$$ rating is not absolutely accurate, since you can have a good meal here for under $ 30.
I must also mention that I came here a few years ago and ordered scallops, and I’ve never had better before or after. (The Farmhouse does not offer scallops…)
Moreover, I have never had dessert here, and that is for what the owner Lara is renowned. So save yourself some room for desert. I’ll make a point of it next time.
Had I never been to The Farmhouse, I might have given The Kitchen Table Bistro 5 stars. If you want a fine-​dining atmosphere by a cozy fireplace in a historic old home, be sure to make reservations at The Kitchen Table. If you want amazing food, head for The Farmhouse.
