Specialties
Specializing in quality performing arts training for students aged 5 to 18. SPARC focuses on the core elements of theater — music, acting and dance — and we view our success in both the quality of our students’ performance and the life skills they gain through our training. Classes take place after school and on weekends, and SPARC offers extensive financial aid through its scholarship program. SPARC also provides performing arts instruction in many area schools through its STAGES program, and we operate the nationally acclaimed statewide New Voices for the Theater program, a playwriting program.
History
Established in 1981.
Founded by Jeri Cutler-Voltz in 1981, SPARC has enjoyed three decades of continual growth. What began in a home on the south side of Richmond soon became a network of instructional locations spread throughout the Richmond community. In 2008, SPARC moved into its permanent facility at 2106 North Hamilton Street, which now houses its black box theater, instructional spaces, and administrative offices. SPARC continues to offer classes in satellite locations throughout the community and provides free performing arts training in many area schools.

Faculty A.
Manager
SPARC’s resident and adjunct faculty is composed of some of the region’s finest artists and educators. Resident faculty members Erin Thomas-Foley, Debra Clinton and Laine Satterfield plan and oversee all SPARC programs, and each possesses a Master of Fine Arts degree. Together they possess almost 30 years of experience teaching with SPARC. SPARC’s 25 adjunct faculty members include school teachers, performers, drama therapists, and private instructors, each of whom is active in the performing arts community and bring a wealth of practical experience to the classroom. SPARC’s faculty are chosen not just for their performing arts expertise, but also for their commitment and ability to convey SPARC’s ultimate purpose — to set the stage for LIFE. Students learn real life skills — confidence, self-expression, teamwork, and responsibility — while enjoying pursuit of their passion for the performing arts!
