I thought this place shut down, but it’s under new management and the sign still says«Royal India Express». They also have desserts… but I didn’t see any sign for their hours of operation and the open sign was not lit up(but the door was open) soooo it’s a little confusing. I ordered some food for take-out and the experience was fine. The flavors were good and I was not disappointed. In fact, I believe the new manager used to work at Noorani(next door), and so the food I had tasted quite similar. My only regret is that it’s not as affordable as I’d like. Also, I wish the naan portion was larger :(I ate it waaay too quickly.

Went to their lunch buffet last week and LOVED it! There were quite a few main dishes to choose from, 2 types of rice, vegetable pakoras and raita. It is very reasonably priced for all the food you can eat… wish I had a bigger stomach! My only recommendations are that they should use real chopped garlic on the naan and to figure out a way to keep the pakoras warm. Can’t wait to go back!

Got a Groupon for Royal India and I’m glad we didn’t spend more than we did. After seeing pictures of their cramped dining area, we decided to have food delivered(which took well over an hour). I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and for $ 11.99 got a small take-out container filled with sauce and about 6 bite-sized pieces of chicken… really?! I do think that plenty of restaurants are almost too generous with their portions but that would have barely satisfied a toddler. Thankfully we had gotten an appetizer and nan as well. Even though the food was very tasty, the portions are ridiculous for the price. Very disappointing and won’t be returning.

Used a coupon bur failed to notice that $ 50 had to be spent… well, by the prices on the menu $ 50 was going to be easy to spend. Food: Very tasteful and wonderfully spiced northern Indian food… the meat was moist and the extras were delicious. Ambiance: Sucked… plain and simple. It has a very«divey» appearance with holes in the wall, one unkempt bathroom, small/wobbly tables, slippery/greasy floors, and food served on paper plates. What?!? I mean, how much does it cost to have real dishes and silverware? The proprietor is very nice and, with a little work, the place can be easily upgraded.

A hole-in-the-wall type place with a nice, courteous owner and good Indian food priced VERY modestly! I am from that part of the world and this is one of my favorite Indian restaurant in Richmond so hopefully that says something :) ! They mainly serve Punjabi-style North Indian dishes(i.e., don’t expect«Idli/dosa» etc. which tend to be part of South Indian cuisine). They don’t have the most widest of selections, but the quality of the food is very good, especially for a quick buffet meal for a workday lunch! They have awesome goat curry in the buffet menu every Friday which is my favorite dish and if you are into Indian food but never tried goat you should make it a priority, trust me you don’t know what you are missing :) !! Bön appetit!

The food and the price was good. My friend and I both got the buffet and it turns out pretty well. This is not a place for fine dinning, but if you are looking for some good Indian food and a nice cheap place this is a good place to go

First off, this place has our favorite waiter in all of Richmond. He has a dry sense of humor, and is friendly to boot. One of our favorite items is the spinach kulcha, which is listed under appetizers but can serve as a filled bread on the side. One time it was rather greasy from the ghee, but other times it has been more delicate. The flavors here are more subtle than in many Richmond Indian restaurants, and not too salty(the bane of Richmond Indian cooking). We have only gone for the buffet one time, and like Matt, I’m not a fan of buffets. At least this one had different offerings than the usual Indian buffet(more vegetables), including an odd dumplings-in-red-gravy item. They also operate a fast-food place, The Chaat House, in the same strip shopping center on Hungary Spring Rd near Broad St. We’ve never tried it.

The lunch buffet has a lot of selection and if you go on tuesday or wednesday it’s only $ 7. It’s a great deal. The food is great, not bland

Some of the food on the buffet was good, but mostly it was bland and the textures were not what I am used to. The nan was just right, an the vegetable dishes were passable, but watch out for the meat dishes. Even the gulab jamun wasn’t tasty, particularly since it was served luke-warm and did not have the aroma it usually has.

Friend and i came here one lazy saturday afternoon for lunch. I’m not a fan of buffet lunches, so as he was stuffing his face with large plates of food, i placed my order with the waitress and waited for what i hoped would be a great indian meal. For a starter, i ordered the mulligatawny soup, which i am admittedly quite obsessed with. They had 3 different levels of «spice» for the soup, which i had not seen before, but since i love spicy food, i ordered it very spicy. It was tasty, with bits of chicken in it. And it was quite spicy, though i’m convinced that was obtained by excessive amounts of chili pepper in the broth. Not quite the way i would make it, but it was still fairly tasty. For the lunch entrée, i ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, which is my standard indian dish. The sauce was fairly tasty, had a nice kick to it, but the chicken was all dark meat. Not only was it just dark meat, but some of it looked a bit… suspect, if you know what i mean. I expected a mix of white and dark chicken, so i was quite disappointed in this. The garlic naan was pretty good, though 1 piece was slightly undercooked(tad bit doughy). There was plenty of garlic on it if you like that, and i do like that. It’s frustrating to me when i eat garlic naan at an indian restaurant and i can’t see nor taste garlic. Overall, the meal was just OK, i’m probably going to try to scout out better indian restaurants in Richmond.
