Richmond Magnuson Grand Hotel and Convention Center

Worst experience ever with this hotel! Owner of hotel or employee refused to refund room rate after two rooms were booked and paid for in full. The room was reserved for a birthday party for a child upon arriving we were advised that there would be an additional fee per child and also that only 4 guest were allowed per room. There were 7 children and 1 adult. We finally came to an agreement (after police were called) and gave deposits that were mandated upon arrival and went to check into room. We had two joined rooms and upon going onto the elevators (which did not display license and worked poorly) we realized that they had only given us one room key the kids stayed upstairs as I requested the other key. I was then asked to check out because I was in violation of the deposit agreement and the money paid would not be refunded the police were still there at that time and said the hotel is known for this! So basically two rooms were paid for and only one was actually entered and we were charged for 2 rooms as well as the deposit and did not even stay! Very awful establishment.

I’ll start by saying that thankfully, I did not encounter any roaches like other reviewers, and the hotel was nearly $ 20 cheaper per night than every other option nearby. However, the hotel is in as bad condition as the other reviewers have indicated. Lights burned out on every floor, most vending/​ice machines don’t work, hallways are barely lit and unclean. Mildewy ceilings in the bathroom, poorly illuminated parking lot, no lights in the pool area at all which I refuse to step into. Continental breakfast was nonexistent.
Spend the extra, stay somewhere else.

OK, I’m not going to say this is a great hotel. It’s large, but appears to be family run. It’s definitely low budget. But when everything else is booked it’s an OK place to lay your head down for a night. There are places where wallpaper is hanging in the hallway. The elevators don’t go to every floor and vending machines don’t all work. However, the rooms are decent and it was quiet the night I stayed despite being completely full.

To say that the Richmond Magnuson Grand Hotel is the worst hotel I have ever encountered, and I have traveled the world on business trips, would sound like hyperbole but I assure you this is my honest and frank opinion. Don’t be fooled by the photos on the website. This place looks like the hotel time forgot complete with a cracked toilet seat in the bathroom. Almost everything is covered by an out of order sign and the place gives off such a creepy vibe I am having a lot of trouble falling asleep. Avoid like the plague.

I think previous reviews were too kind. The short if it… this place is a dump! To start, every area is in some stat if disrepair or neglect: missing light bulbs from the parking lot to the hallways, a broken elevator, vending machines that don’t work. Our metal bathroom door will not close unless you shove it with all your might. Broken sink drain… ancient tv. Bookings .com said wifi in every room… not!!! Here’s the worst part. Wait for it… roaches!!! Yes, roaches. When you have them scatter when you flick the bathroom light on, it’s time to go. If I could chop that one star in half, I would. If you want to take a chance on this place, god help you. There is a Home Depot next door, so buy a tyvek suit and some home defense spray for your luggage.

Cons: The place is kinda run-​down, staff is unenthusiastic, bedspread stained, towels dirty, tube television (say what?!) you know, like an old timey tv from the 90s: P
Pros: Nice shower, Continental Breakfast, Discounted online rate (around $ 70 on a Sunday night), Pool, Walk to restaurant, bowling, bar.
All in all it’s a really 3 star place, and they nearly escaped me reviewing them entirely since I don’t normally review middle of the road places, until this morning they lost another star.
There is no Do Not Disturb sign in the room, so when my lovely wife went out to get coffee and the bolt latch was not engaged, the cleaning staff just walked into the room at 9am without knocking while I was sleeping. They then left and apparently there was still some question whether the room was occupied, so they came in AGAIN moments later.
They also began knocking on all the other doors to see if they could start cleaning, 2 full hours before checkout. The poor people were of course defenseless without the all-​important shield of the Do Not Disturb sign.

If you are a neat freak, skip this place. If you are down with the dirt for the price and convenience, it’s liveable, just know that its BYO DND sign.

have not stayed at or even heard of this hotel & I am a RVA native. However my review is because I was scheduled to set up a table for my Jewel Kade business there this weekend at the Bridal Show.
The hotel canceled the event last night! How the heck do they just cancel. We have advertised and brides don’t play! The event has been scheduled at the Holiday Inn Staples Mill & all of the registered brides were emailed. But what a huge inconvenience!
When I stay in RVA my first choice is the OMNI downtown and will continue to be.

This hotel is not maintained. We tried four unacceptable rooms before we ended in an adequate room. The parking lot is not well lit and the staff does not care about the customers. When we complained we were told that we got the hotel for a cheap rate.
