Richmond Flying Squirrels

I’m a huge baseball fan and try to catch a game whatever I can when traveling. Stadium is completely reinvigorated from the Richmond Braves days. Decent food prices and OK beer prices.
Only real complaint is that the ushers were forcing general admission ticket holders to sit in the gold chairs on a Tuesday night… Really?! I mean, really?! It’s a Tuesday in Richmond in August… The guys were just doing their job but it made no sense given the circumstances might want to revisit that policy Monday through Wednesday. If people are willing to show up for a weekday game, better to make them feel invited.

Great views, fun activities for the family and lots of space. The food is good and if you are lucky you can get s free hotdog from a guy riding a pink flamingo. The theme nights are a hoot and I was there for starwars night. I recommend getting to the game early to have fun with the pregame events. All in all will come again and maybe even consider season tickets.

Came to here to see my Bowie Baysox and even that they lost I had a great time at the game. I sat lower level next to the visiting teams dugout and from there had a great view of the game. They have a great selection of tasty local brews at the local beer bar/​stand on the concourse. All the folks that worked there, that I had dealing with were nice and helpful. My only complaint was not able to get a picture with Nutzy (mascot) for my collection, since I never saw them anywhere near me. Will have to hunt them down the next time there, like I did with Cool Ray. One more interesting things I have ever seen between inning at a minor league game between innings happen here. They pulled a live pig in a cart between the foul lines and the stands. When asked about it, a season ticket holder said it just one of those things that they do at the game.

I have been to everything from big ticket major league to shitty winter league games in small town, Texas, and I have never, ever, been able to say — and everyone attending Flying Squirrels’s home games can bear witness — I have seen hotdogs thrown from the diamond into the crowd. Until now.

Like cheap t-​shirts — you know — except, it is food that fans actually ate.
If anything could buttress the sentiment that I was immersed in some strange new environment unlike any other, it would probably be food being thrown from the playing field to the crowd; an accidental overthrow occurring, thus causing the hotdog to hit the roof over the announcer’s box; and, said hotdog rolling in a descent from I don’t know how many metres into the hands of a fan who would go on to summarily consume it.
Now, I do not particularly aim to appear unamerican by questioning this whole process; thereby, I should bookend the anecdote by clarifying that I would have probably eaten it as well, being that I am a loyal U.S. American. U.S.A.
The tickets are dirt cheap.
The parking fee is dirt cheap.
The concessions and trinkets are dirt cheap.
It’s all dirt cheap.
They try hard to field a respectable team out there to entertain the fans; however, they are not winning any championships anytime soon. They should also not be going anywhere with a stadium just recently remodeled with taxpayer funds, but that is an entirely different essay for an entirely different setting.

They have a big focus on being family friendly with some kind of event after every inning.
Some local craft beers and decent food.

We had a good time. All 17 of us. It was my 9 year old daughters birthday. The package the Squirrels put together works great. Thanks for a good time.

Squrriels games are always fun cause there is a little something for everyone. It’s great for the baseball lover, the food lover and the people watcher.
Their food is your typical baseball food. Curly fries, curly cheese fries, hot dogs, fried pickles (my favorite!) and burgers. They pretty much have a lot of fried delicious food. Also what I saw today was they now have a deep fried pb&j uncrustable so if you are a fan of trying crazy fried foods I say get one.
Also they do have dip n dots however I learned the hard way and they are cash only. So if you go make sure you have cash on you as well for when you want anything from the small carts selling food or drinks.
I say everyone should go to a game at least once, or bring a friend who has never been to a game before. The people are nice who work there and even if we didn’t win it’s still fun!

What a neat ballpark. You really feel a part of the team when you go to see a game. Not sure why the large beers are $ 9.50. But we share and enjoy. We went today on Memorial Day and they had nice activities, great baseball. Fun! Mondays are McDonald days so we got buy 1 ticket get one free with a Mcdonalds receipt! Hey more $$ for beer!

Seeing a Flying Squirrels game is always a good time for the family, for hanging out with a friend (or friends) who want to enjoy a nice day while also drinking beer outside, or just those who love the game. This stadium really makes the effort to keep you happy and coming back.
I went to see the opening game this year with a friend and it was great. They had a «motorcycle» on a high wire act, a man jumping through a ring of fire, fireworks, clowns (though that might be a disincentive for some!), and lots of other sideshows as well. They even had Seattle Seahawks player Michael Robinson throw the first pitch, which was pretty cool for any NFL fans who happened to be into baseball on this particular day.
Pricing here is good, and discounted tickets make it even better (I live right down the street from the stadium, so I get them for free from my apartment complex, woo!). You’ll see pretty quickly based on the announcements and the food/​drink prices that they don’t care about profiting on the tickets: they’re banking on concessions sales and advertising. Nothing wrong with those, just be sure to factor that into your thinking. My advice: eat a meal pre-​game, and have dessert there. They have great desserts, and a unique one I enjoyed: a fried PB&J uncrustable. It was amazing! (By the way, download «Bypass Lane» app for your phone to order concessions without waiting in line, they’ll text you when your food is ready!)
The Squirrels didn’t really seem to have their heart in it (final score was 6 – 1, sadly), though baseball is kind of like fishing a bit: sometimes it’s just nice to have an excuse to be outside enjoying a nice day and consuming large amounts of beer without being arrested. And after all, isn’t that the true American dream?

–Weekly ticket discounts make it easy to get in even cheaper (some nights you can even get a 2-​for-​1 deal just by bringing a McDonalds receipt, that’s a deal!)
–LOTS of special events and giveaways.
–Some good food offerings, and beer is definitely there!
–Seating is good, and there are no obstructions which might ruin a particular section’s view.
–Very kid-​friendly.
Cons:
–ALWAYS a long line at concessions. Use the app «Bypass Lane» to order your food through your phone and they’ll text you when it’s ready to pick up!
–Food’s not cheap, though that’s pretty clearly because food/​beer is where the stadium draws its profits from (that and all the advertising!).
–If your evening out is ruined when the home team loses, welllll… maybe you better check out the team they’re playing before buying tickets. :-P

For years going to the Diamond was about seeing a potential major-​leaguer play and rehab or make his move. That was cool, but it wasn’t a full fan experience. Since the Flying Squirrels moved into the Diamond and into Richmond, they have made themselves a part of the city and the culture here. They’re civically involved and they really have embraced that roll. So, now a trip to the ballpark is full of events for kids and better food, bands, silly games on the field, mascots, interesting sponsorships, a potbelly pig (that alone is worth the price of admission) and a lot of other extras in addition to very good baseball.
Wherever the team ends up playing in town, we’re really glad they’re here. The ticket prices have remained very reasonable and it’s a huge upgrade on fun. As you think about where to spend your spring fun days — this is a great place to start.

For the past three years, I’ve purchased a package of tickets that allowed me to attend seven games each season. But I declined this year when they called me the other week to renew.
The games are just boring… the first year, I went to three of my seven games. The second year I went to none. The third year, I forced myself to go to six or seven of them.
Maybe it’s boring because I don’t like sports… but mostly I feel antagonized by all their mascots. I understand… you need a squirrel mascot. That’s fine. But then they have three Mr Hankeys running around the field in-​between innings … they have a pirate for some reason because piracy makes so much sense in Richmond, and some poor little pig that gets run around the field by a guy pretending to be a redneck. Another mascot is perpetually molesting a pink flamingo. It’s almost as if the game is interrupting the on-​field antics. Enough mascots!
I also find their statistics to be suspect. When you buy a package of tickets, they automatically sell you one for the first game. So yes, their first game is sold out. But many of the seats are also empty. It seems deceptive and it makes me wonder what other unethical practices they employ.
The only good thing about these games are the price. Seats in the nose-​bleed section are $ 7, and $ 11 in the premium area. Parking is $ 3, and they have an area for bicycles that’s free, of course.
Can you say $ 10 parking downtown? Congestion on roads that were not meant to handle a stadium? To think the Mayor and team are trying to bully their way and desecrate the downtown with a stadium; this is why I did not renew my membership. I vote with my wallet. A downtown stadium doesn’t make sense fiscally, practically, or ethically.

Baseball at the Diamond will always include: inexpensive tickets, massive beers, Nutzy the Flying Squirrel, The Acorn and Parker the Rally Pig. Why? Because Richmond is just awesome in that «we’re kinda random but who really cares because at the same time we’re super awesome» way.
If you sit in the super inexpensive seats, you can see the skyline in the distance which makes it even more enjoyable. Squirrels games are always a good time and an excellent opportunity to people watch (I don’t think most people go to watch the game). Fireworks are always an added bonus and so are the giveaway nights. The Diamond actually made my dreams come true when I met Shaka Smart at VCU Alumni Night… no lie. Dreams… came…true. In between innings (and most plays) there is some kind of contest, give away, dance, game, etc. for you to enjoy watching on the field. All kinds of fun stuff going on here!
If you’re in RVA and you want to live like we live — hit up a Squirrels game! You’ll be happy you did.

Watching a Squirrels game is an enjoyable way to spend a summer evening without breaking the bank.
— By 7:30 pm, the whole stadium is in the shade and the temperature is just right.
— Tickets are around 10 dollars and even the mezzanine is very close to the field (arguably a better view than the first floor.)
— As with any baseball game, there are moments of tension and excitement.
— Since you don’t know any of the players, the focus is less on the game and more on the fun time.

I occasionally go to Richmond Flying Squirrels minor league baseball games. The Diamond is one of Richmond’s historic stadiums. I went to the game Friday night vs. Altoona for VCU alumni night. The stadium was very crowded because of Shaka Smart bobblehead giveaway. Also, Shaka Smart threw the first pitch. The weather was perfect for the game. I sat at the bottom of the stadium (watch out for the baseballs). The view of the action was great. Most seats in the stadium give fans a decent view. Ticket prices are reasonable. The food in the stadium is reasonably priced for a ball park. There’s plenty of entertainment between innings for fans. Fireworks are shot off at the stadium on selected nights. The parking is $ 3 (cheap). The Flying Squirrels games are family friendly. Enjoying a Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game is a good choice.

Like Kristin V and Jamie D, I’m not a huge baseball fan, but you can’t help but have the best time ever when you go to a Squirrels game. The tickets are cheap, the beers are huge, and every second of the game that is not filled with baseball is full of entertainment: contests, crazy dances, t-​shirt cannons, etc. It’s such a blast, and probably one of the more affordable nights out if you are with your family or a large group. And there is always a theme night! The best are the ones that feature random d-​list celebs of yesteryear.
Oh yeah, and the baseball-​I don’t know much about it, but even a non-​fan like me gets wrapped up in the game! If you live in Richmond and you still haven’t been to a Squirrels game, you are doing it wrong!

For me, Squirrels’ games are all about the experience. I’ve never been huge into sports, but I always enjoy a live game and the Diamond has never disappointed.
Aside from the baseball itself, the games are entertaining, with different contests between innings, free giveaways and promotions, theme nights and even the occasional evening with fireworks. General admission tickets are just $ 7, so it’s an affordable activity that’s great for a group outing.
As for the concessions, the insanely big beers are the way to go — just don’t drink ‘em too slow or they’ll be warm by the end. Can’t say I’ve tried much in the way of food, but they offer your typical peanuts/​hot dogs/​cotton candy, etc. The stadium’s easy to navigate, too. Parking’s never been an issue for me, and I typically beat the crowds back to the lot so exiting is painless.
I’m a fan of the contagious energy found inside the stadium gates, and I definitely recommend a game for a low-​key night out!

I come from a baseball family. Growing up I was forced to watch so many baseball games — little league, professional, minor league, college — some might say, baseball overload. So, needless to say, as an adult I generally try to avoid watching baseball at all costs.
There’s one exception to this rule — I LOVE FLYING SQUIRRELS GAMES! The Flying Squirrels are so much more than baseball! They always have a theme, there’s always lots of good people watching, they have crazy contests in between innings and they have GIGANTIC beers! One time, I even got to see a guy get shot out of a cannon! What more could you ask for in a night out?
Yeah they have some pesky baseball in between all the entertainment, but it’s totally worth it! If you’re looking for a fun, casual night out, I definitely recommend catching a game!

Love it! This is the way to spend the 4^th of July with the family. I had family visiting from out of state and wanted to do something fun for the 4^th so got us tickets for the Squirrels game followed by fireworks. I’ve only been to a few other games but don’t know why I’m not here all the time. This is great cheap fun for everyone! The tickets were only $ 8 each for good seats, they actually sell $ 2 hot dogs along with lots of other great ballpark food, and have a selection of beer either on draft of in those new metallic bottles. Much of the food is only at the concession stands but there are the traditional vendors walking around (HOT Dogsss! Get your hot dogs hereee!)
This park is also cool for games because they have little activities and entertainment between innings to keep it lively. I’m a lifelong baseball fan so am just fine watching the pitcher warm up while the fielders throw it around, but it’s a nice change to see something different.
Parking $ 3 for the main lot… can’t beat that at a sporting event. Oh yeah, they won too!

Living in Richmond my entire life I have been to plenty of baseball games at the Diamond. This park is more enjoyable with the Squirrels than with the Braves.
It is not just a baseball game anymore, Squirrels Management entertains you from opening pitch to park closing.
Who would have thought that chanting Chips and Queso would be so much fun?!
For the best deal, go on Monday. It is McDonald’s Monday. This means bring a McDonald’s receipt and get two tickets for the price of one. Even if you don’t eat McDonald’s you can get a $ 1 Sweet Tea and save $ 10 on a lower level seat. Only downfall is that you may be harassed by the scary McDonald clown.
My advice, grab a big beer, some cracker jacks, and have some fun.

Going to a Squirrels game is definitely a fun date night, or an entertaining and affordable family night. It has all the charms of traditional baseball, plus some little oddities that make it uniquely Richmond. Since Ginger’s review covered so much good info, I’ll stick to the oddities:
1. Yes, our mascot is a flying squirrel. And Nutzy does fly… kind of. When I was there, Nutzy was flying off railings, kissing girls hands and posing to show off his stellar body to anyone who would check him out. The railing trick was particularly impressive– with the weight of that huge squirrel head, the person in that suit must have really good balance.
2. Vendors serve food and drinks in the stands– in costume. My favorite was the older gentleman dressed up as a king, and the beer man who asked customers if their beer was cold, and then said loudly «ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER…» He did a lot of business in my section, that’s for sure.
3. The vendors that work the stands sell cookies and milk towards the end of the game. How perfect is that?
4. There are games on the field after EVERY INNING. Whether it’s a tee shirt giveaway or a hoagie toss challenge, there are tons of games to keep kids engaged…
5. It’s $ 10 per ticket to get the good seats. I sat in the second row, on the first base line near home plate. It was intense. I could definitely have chatted with the players, if I was so inclined.
6. The soft pretzels are actually large soft pretzel sticks… so you can carry your pretzel AND YOUR BEER without dropping anything!
7. Parking is $ 3! (ok, that’s not an oddity really, but it’s a damn good deal).
And here’s a final tip– bring your own peanuts, if you can manage to smuggle them in. It’s $ 2.50 a bag, and the bag holds like 4 oz of peanuts! You can go through that in one inning!
