Michael & Son is made-​up of a team of experienced and exceptional contractors working in the Richmond area, including Ashland, Mechanicsville, Petersburg and Tappahannock. Professionalism, high-​quality standards and customer service are the integrated philosophy at Michael & Son. Our services include a five-​year warranty on all electrical jobs and a one-​year warranty on plumbing and handyman jobs. Michael & Son Services has been serving the metropolitan area for over 30 years, and more recently the Richmond area. Established in 1976 by my father Mousa «Mike» Mansour, along with the help of my mother Siham“Suzi”. My Father had an all too typical poor immigrant story; leaving school at the age of twelve in order to work to help support his family, he started learning the electrical trade at the age of twelve. After immigrating to America in 1968 he found work as a union electrician during the day and worked for his customers on week nights and weekends. Since the age of 6 years I tagged along with my father on any Saturday, school holidays and summer vacations. I enjoyed working with my father and the friendship we had. While my father wasn’t a wealthy man he gave me a wealth of experiences and a great foundation for both the technical skills and values that would define the man that I am. He taught me the value of being an honorable man of your word. I owe all that I have my parents

I don’t normally write reviews; however, my experience today with Daryn Hooper warrants one. He was an absolute pleasure to work with during a situation that could normally be very stressful. Our AC went out and I called this morning and was lucky enough to have Daryn come to my rescue. He was detailed in explaining every option we could go with to either repair or replace our unit. He also walked me through all of the payment options. Daryn made a difficult situation much easier with his extensive knowledge and pleasant demeanor. Thank you Daryn and thank you Michael and Sons!

I’m sorry I had to give them one star, but Unilocal does not allow you to give less! This is by far the worst contractor I ever worked with in my life! They only rip you off! They actually said they went under my house to service my HVAC unit, but I found out one week later there was no possible way they services my equipment. I had an electrical issue that was present before they services the equipment. I had Someone else fix the electrical issue after Michael and sons left. But as it turns out, the electric issue affected my HVAC system. If Michael and Sons did work on that equipment, they would have known. They just took my money for doing nothing!

First Thomas Dixon did a great job explaining different systems to me. Then Rolando and Larry did a fabulous install, helping me understand how to work and take care of my new infinity carrier HVAC system. Finally, Melvin and Timothy came out to clean my ducts. All were very tidy, hard working, timely, and very pleasant.

Called this place based on the onslaught of TV ads when I needed a repair in a hurry. The tech was late, rude, and tried to rip me off. They quoted a repair for me that I balked at, so I called another company who recommended half the work, at less than a quarter of the price. Seems Michael & Sons takes advantage of people’s lack of knowledge about heating and air, to charge exorbitant amounts for unnecessary repairs. My control board was fine, all I needed was a contactor changed out– a year later my system is running fine with the «failed» control board. Disgusted. DO NOT TRUST THEM.

I had these people out to my farm to provide an estimate on installing a special circuit to support an electric kiln. It seemed high to me, and sure enough the quote was twice as high as another electrician said he’d charge. The second electrician said the Michael & Son price was highway robbery! You just know you’re in trouble when a flashy Mercedes van rolls up outside your place. My advice: avoid big outfits like this when you hire an electrician or a plumber, and go with someone small and local who has a good reputation AND a beat-​up old pickup truck or van.

Wish I could give them zero starts but this is the lowest possible. Try not to ask any of there technicians any tough questions. They’ll get flustered and confused because their scope of knowledge is very limited.

Michael & Son will come into your house, rip you off as much money as they can (in our case it was over 3000 $ for work that could be done in almost 300 $, that’s so much it cost us to repair it with other company) and will leave, but the problem still won’t be fixed!!!
the problem was that we lost water pressure, so we called Michael &Son, the master plumber (without checking pump in the well or anything else, rather than only the water filter) tells us that we need to change water filter, which would cost us 1,341 $ and it will fix the problem, we said ok, so the next day he came with another plumber, saying that he needs to check something, and another plumber told us that there is a lick somewhere under the house and it needs to be fixed, and the water tank needs to be replaced as well, which would cost us 2,389 $, and it will fix the problem! we said ok again! after replacing all that, and already charging us 3,730 $ (the most important thing is, after replacing all that, there still was no water pressure!) the plumber told us that the pump was broken in the well and to replace that it would cost us 2,125 $ more, and it’s needed to be done, that was causing the problem! we finally said no, we need another quote. they came up with the new expenses every time!!! next day we called other company and as they found out (pretty easily, by just checking all the bathrooms, which Michael & Son’s plumber didn’t do) that one of they toilets was leaking constantly and it was causing the pressure fall in the well… Oh and the well pump was not broken at all ! so basically everything they changed had nothing to do with the water pressure !!
So Michael & Son charged us 3,730 $ (and wanted to charge even more, and apparently the problem still wouldn’t be fixed) for work which the other company fixed only for 275 $ !
I know we had to get other quotes before just paying them like that, but I’m not a plumber, i don’t know any of that, that’s why we call the company and trust them.

We had a house fire in March. The home belongs to my siblings and I, however I was the one staying there at the time of the fire. We decided to go with Michael and Sons even though we had lower quotes. The technicians came and heard a conversation I had with my husband and they threw away everything in our home, down to the mirrors and pictures on the walls that had not been affected by the fire. Immediately upon seeing this we recovered what we could from the dumpster and called the office. We were passed to several people who eventually said to send a list of items and they would take care of it. That was July 2015. The technicians did not clean the walls in the damaged portion of the home or the closet in the bedroom that burned. We called to have a supervisor come and show us what was done other than throwing everything away that we owned. However they are now trying to sue us for 4k. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They didn’t even say I’m sorry. Just lied and sent me a bill. I would give –5 stars… that is negative 5 stars. A family down and then got a kick in the gut.

I would give zero stars if possible! We had a flood in our lower level due to a failed sump pump. We had called two other companies who told us they couldn’t be out for a few days! We needed someone faster so we were recommended Michael and Sons. After paying their «emergency fee» someone came out on Christmas Eve. After 30 seconds he looked at us and told us, sorry I can’t fix this issue. How can you be a plumbing company and not fix a sump pump? Of course they were more than willing to take our money, for nothing! Won’t be using them again!

I had the worse experience with Michael and Sons. My hot water tank burst and ruined my hardwood floors. They came and pulled up the floors and brought fans to dry the floors. I picked out the new floors and the fans were to be picked up 3 days later. The gentlemen was over and hour late bringing the fans. I kept calling to see if the floors were in and when the fans would be picked up. It took over 2 week to get through to someone. They also inflated the price of the floors and drying the floors. At that point I went with someone else to do the installation of the floor. This has been going on since July. I asked them for an estimate to paint the base boards this month and now they’re trying to charge and inflated stocking fee from July and inflated the estimate. Mike is rude and nasty and a crook. They don’t communicate well. Nor do they follow up or follow through.

Wonder how many other negative reviews for Michael and Sons were removed? Mine was. Don’t make the mistake of spending $ 30 on an estimate. Call someone else. The estimate we received was $ 1000 higher than the company we chose to replace our gas water heater. That’s not even in the same ballpark. They pushed a service plan for our home and said they would fix other things at «no charge».

This review is based on their customer service/​scheduling only. They never actually made it to my house. I called, to have a full house generator worked on.
1. I set up the first appointment. They called the day before to reschedule. No problem. I didn’t mind.
2. They called again to cancel the 2nd appointment. I was till OK at this point.
3. The third appointment was a no show.
A customer service person called and tried to make it right but at this point I was so disappointing that I didn’t want to work with them. They offered me coupons, but I just had no faith in them after the scheduling issues. I use Automatic Air and couldn’t be happier.

DONT USE MICHAELS AND SONS, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT GETTING THEIR $$$ AND WILL LEAVE YOUR REPAIR IN RUINS!!! If I could leave negative stars I would! This has been a horrible experience! $ 9,000.00 and 4 months later they still aren’t finished. This company scams you into believing they are honest and will supply you with great service and craftsmanship, they definitely Do Not!
My repair started in July, we needed our crawlspace waterproofed. They came, I paid my bill in full, but a short time after my house smelled and my dryer reeked of mildew, I was worse off than the day they showed up. They had pulled my dryer hose off under the house, left wet insulation under our flooring among other things. The dryer was now blowing under my house building more moisture than ever. After raising a ruckus with customer svc they come back out, only to find things weren’t complete. M&S will tell you they will show you their work, explain what they did, etc, but they never even checked to make sure their personal completed the job let alone the other promises they make. I had paint on my siding, insulation spray on new stamped concrete along with the ever growing mildew smell and mold growth under my house. Its fixed they say, NOPE, guess again.
3rd time out, different repair workers, a month later and who knows where things stand! They only send someone when they dont have a new paying job, they never return phone calls or give you an update or check progress. Now they tell me I have a leak, they bring a guy to repair the faucet and another $ 350 before he will leave our house. What recourse do we have, they have their $$$, halfway did the job, created more problems, create damage they never intend to fix, never return calls, and demand payment before they will leave the property. i would write more, but I hope you get the picture.
John is the «manager» who never returned calls one time and Shaun who sells you the lies! DON’T USE THIS COMPANY RICHMONDERS!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!

My home has no problem but I need to inspect for some reason… They came over and did thousands of dollars recommended unnecessary services… The invoice looks horrible and it takes forever to communicate with them. They never call you back if you leave any questions to the office. Would not recommend to anyone!

I give this company negative stars, they’re a bunch of crooks. This is for the Richmond, Chesterfield Virginia area.
My AC wasn’t working because the heat was running and wouldn’t stop so I shut it off at the breaker box. I called Michael and Son and the technician came to the house. They were pretty prompt because I paid for their emergency service $ 169. The technician told me he couldn’t fix the unit at the time… he said there were multiple leaks in the coils and that would cost a couple thousand dollars to replace, he said the 2 «peanut» relays needed to be replaced and they were $ 300 each, he also said the electrical heater strips were damaged and needed to be replaced, and that was going to be another $ 1,000 and recommended me to replace the whole system. Well, the technician and an HVAC estimator came back the next day to give me a quote on replacing the system. The basic model was $ 8,300, the next step up was $ 9,600 and the best model was $ 14,400.
I called another company to get a second estimate, the technician came and inspected the system and said the only thing wrong was that the emergency heater override was stuck. He replaced that and charged me $ 120. Send me an email and I will give you the name and number of the 2nd company that fixed my system,

2 different appointments to my residence during 3 days were forgotten about. I never received a courtesy call for either missed appointment. The customer service people I spoke with (altogether 3 times) were nice enough, but apparently the service techs and dispatchers are not reliable or professional. These 2 missed appointments cost me 8 hours of my time, which is wasted money for me! After the second forgotten appointment I called customer service again and they suggested I speak to dispatch to see if and when the tech can arrive. I explained that I will not get burned a 3rd time and the best thing for me is to cancel and hire a different company. No apology, discount, or anything was extended my way. After reading these negative reviews I suppose I should be great-​full for not using them!

I had a call from a customer service rep. She said M&S would honor the manager’s offer of a gift card for dinner. I appreciated the effort — 3 calls in total — from M&S to give me a gift card. I declined and explained that I don’t want to feel any obligation or have any further contact with a company operating a business the way they do. I still haven’t been able to get their stickers off my equipment.
The rep was also able to track down the manager who came to my house — I had long since thrown his card away. He is no longer with the company which is great since I imagine him using the shady company his wife worked for — RVA Restoration (which you can’t even find online) — to do repairs was probably not standard business practice.

I had a different (albeit still mixed) experience from the ones posted here. Our upstairs air conditioner stopped working after 15 years, so we got two quotes, one from Michael and Son, and another from a second large, well-​known competitor. The M&S quote was $ 1500 less, and we didn’t have to pay an estimate fee. On top of that, because they would need a crane to install the new unit on our roof (we were initially told), and would require a few days to obtain a city permit, in the mean time, we were given window units to use free of charge. Unfortunately, it seems that the sales staff is less reliable than the actual technicians, because when they showed up (on time) with the crane ready to install the new unit, a city permit had not been obtained (and it turns out they didn’t need a crane anyway), which delayed the whole process a day. Then, on the second day, shortly after installation, the unit stopped working. Thankfully, true to form, their responsiveness was top-​notch, and an electrician was out within a few hours. Turns out it required a simple modification to our electrical system, and we were back in business. THEN, a week later, we got a call (from a sales person) that there was a recalled part, and they would need to come back. Turns out that was not exactly the case, and it just needed to be inspected to make sure it was installed properly, which it was.
2 weeks after engaging M&S, we have a new A/​C unit that works well, and know that if any other major repair project comes up, they’ll be quick to respond. That said, in the future, I think we’ll try to speak directly with the technicians and avoid some of the headache we experienced.

I should have looked on Unilocal before calling Michael and Son to come out to my house. Here’s my big plumber adventure that ultimately resulted in me being out $ 30 and no work being done. Luckily, this blunder only cost me the $ 30 dispatch fee. For this much effort, they should be paying me $ 30.
I called on a Saturday to have a faucet in a Jacuzzi tub replaced with updated fixtures. I specifically told the dispatcher that it was soldered in, so I’m not qualified to do the work myself. She told me a technician was available all Sunday afternoon and that we had our pick of times. We selected a time, but later that night we received a call that there was a «miscommunication» (not sure what that meant) and there were no appointments available on Sunday. Though we were a little miffed, this wasn’t that big of a deal to us so my wife and I scheduled an appointment for the following Saturday morning.
That tech arrived promptly at 8:00 am, but after quoting me about $ 250 for the work told me that he wasn’t qualified to do the work and had to reschedule another technician. A dispatcher called me to schedule a time for the next day, or at least later Saturday afternoon. After a brief protest, she worked it out so another technician could come within a few hours.
Things were looking up until the next technician quoted me $ 800 for the work! I may not be the most handy person, but I’m also not an idiot. I paid him the $ 30 fee just to get Michael and Sons out of my house. I’ll never make this mistake again, and I’d encourage you all to learn from mine. I should have figured that if they were going to offer a $ 50 coupon for faucet replacement, the price of the work would be way too high to begin with.
***Update*** Per the «owner’s message» you all saw, I called and spoke to Mr. Vance Shepard. He agreed to perform the work at the quoted price. He also asked that I update my post to reflect that he offered me the quoted price. I did not take him up on the offer. Instead, I returned the faucet and instead bought a trim kit that fit the existing rough-​in valve.

We have some minor electrical work we want done. (Unhooking a hot tub, fixing some wiring in the external shed, taking a look at our panel box because we had found the wrong kind of wiring to our hot water heater and wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything else wrong). We had an electrician come out for a quote.
Pros: Available on weekends. Technician was prompt and courteous. Phone call before arriving was accurate.
Cons: Immediately went into scare tactics and told us we were in immediate danger of a fire if we did not switch out the entire electrical panel. He said he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if this were his house. He promised they could do the work that afternoon, and gave us an estimate that seemed really high.
We didn’t feel comfortable with this, and decided to have other quotes — and more than one other company assured us that we did NOT need a new box, but if we did want to upgrade at any point, the price would be half of what M&S had quoted.
We will never be calling this company again, and if you DO call them, we recommend getting other quotes.
