Main Street Barber & Mercantile

I’ve been coming to Main Street since the week they opened. I’ve had haircuts from every single one of their staff, and I’ve never left disappointed. Walk-​ins are rarely a problem, but I’ve learned that it’s better to call that morning if you’re in a hurry or want someone specific. It’s the barber shop experience I remember from being a kid. Just a row of friendly barbers, a row of chairs to wait in, a good cup of coffee and good conversation.

Finally, a place where you can easily get a fresh haircut — reasonable prices, proper work up, no nonsense barbers. Place is super chill, doesn’t feel like an assembly line and waiting list isn’t 4+ weeks out. 3^rd time IS a charm.

I’ve been here a couple of times and after a string of bad haircuts, I won’t be coming back. The people are very nice, but haircuts usually left ridges along the sides of my head and other parts uneven so that I needed to style my hair one specific way until it all grew back out. During my last haircut Charlie tried to talk me out of the style I asked for because it wasn’t something he liked and even said, «Next time let us do what we want.» I think he overlooked that I have to deal with this haircut everyday.

Not a bad haircut. I would not recommend having them trim your beard.

Super friendly, classic, great vibe! Went in for a cut and Sheila provided great service and styling to my overgrown mess. Very happy with their shop and service. Great price! Five stars!

This place is fantastic! The atmosphere is great and there is always good music playing. You’re guaranteed to be greeted by all the barbers when you walk in the door. Charlie is the man and does a top notch job. $ 20 isn’t the cheapest haircut you’ll find in richmond, but they do great work and you’re sure to have an enjoyable experience while you’re there.

I walked right in and was welcomed by the staff and sat down for a haircut. The place is clean, staff is friendly and Chris did a great job cutting my hair. I was a little nervous at first because it looked like he was taking too much off but the final product was great! I am very satisfied and will recommend this place to everyone!

Great place to get a haircut in RVA! Staff is personable and can give a great haircut. Great shop, keep the gents looking good. Still don’t understand the dudes with the man bun?

Awesome shop! Great mix of barbers. Real deal and walk in. When I’m ready, I know it so I don’t like appointments. Can’t commit I call ahead and get on the list. I’ve even called ahead a few days prior. I’ve been to 3 of the 5 and that’s cool but I’ve settled on my favorite. Check em out.

Main Street Barber is a great option in downtown for a men’s cut, which runs $ 20. Walk ins are welcome, and there’s rarely a significant wait. But, if there is a bit of a line, you can enjoy a free cup of coffee. The shop is clean, the cuts are consistent and the atmosphere is relaxed.

I’ve been here several times and always have Jerry cut my hair. He does an awesome job. He wasn’t there today so I decided to get a haircut anyway from one of the other barbers. HUGE MISTAKE! This was the worst hair cut ever. I was specific as to what I wanted done, but this guy did what he wanted instead of what I wanted. I guess he was to busy listening to the hard core rap that he put in the radio when the owner stepped out. He cut my hair just like he cuts everyone’s. I guess it’s the only cut he knows. I will never go here again. I had to go elsewhere to get my hair fixed. Even the 3 stylists at the salon I went to said that it was a horrible cut and that I shouldn’t have paid for such a messed up cut. Just because a stylist is working at a reputable salon doesn’t mean they are a professional.

Chris hooks it up! Creative and cool, and not expensive. Overall a stellar experience.

Bottom line up front is that this is a great barbershop. I’ve walked out after every visit with a great hair cut and my beard looking somehow reputable again. Pretension free and professional barber stylists.

The perfect balance of old world barbershop and unpretentious inviting atmosphere! I live in Virginia Beach and looked on Unilocal for a barber shop while in Richmond for business, so glad I found it! I will be making the trip monthly to get my hair cut and a shave!

Barbers were really friendly and helpful. They knew what they were doing with a new customer and gave me a great haircut with very little to go on. Great place for a good trim.

Great group of folks here. Great haircut, conversation and free coffee! It’s also a fun place to just hang out and chat… always something interesting you’ll hear from the cats here.

A class act. Never have I felt such southern hospitality as I did upon entry into this small modern shop, with old fashioned accents. The shop is in a residential area, where at 11:30, plenty of street parking was to be had.
Service ¹⁰⁄₅ stars. Wow. When we walked in, we were greeted by the whole team. I was asked if I was indeed Seth, and seated in Charlie’s chair immediately, where he had been waiting. My gf and I were offered complimentary, local coffee… excellent. I was feeling ill and was treated to a cold towel for my forehead, a shot of an old time (apple cider vinegar-​based) cold remedy. MMMmm-​ish. I also got a mid-​way hair washing to clean up and cool down. Great conversation with the NY-​expat Charlie. Hip and stylish dude.
The Cut: ⁵⁄₅ I didn’t see the cut happen, just the result, as I was facing the center of the shop, but the result did not disappoint. Very clean, mostly scissored, and well blended. Came in with a mop past my nose, and left with a clean, tight style, exactly the way I described. Charlie knew what I wanted and delivered,
The price: 5÷5… I know I come from a different economic area of the country. but 20 $ is not an expensive cut. I’d shell out 45 to have this cut at home, and still be happy.
Quick too. in and out in 30 or 40 minutes, and never felt as though he was rushing.
HIGHLY recommend these guys based on my visit. Should be easy enough to snag a walk-​in appointment, but I think a call is courteous.

Both experiences at MSB&M have been great! My husband grew a beard in for no shave November and we stopped by at the end of the month to have it removed. What an awesome experience that was! But make an appointment because it is a process; a royalty experience!
We went back a second time so that hubby and son could both get hair cuts and they both loved them. Everyone there made us feel welcomed and is was exactly as I imagined the old time barbers shops to be; everyone chiming in on one big conversation. Thanks for being awesome. We will be back!
