DoubleTree by Hilton Richmond Downtown

I stay here for my company so don’t have a choice on where I stay. This was the first time I eat at the hotel restaurant and was not impressed at all. The servers clothing was dirty, the water had something floating in, and the salmon was very dry. The salad was good and so was the beer. I don’t think I will eat here again. Sorry guys. Try harder.

Average DoubleTree hotel. The bar was pretty nice with some good TVs. The room was pretty cramped… especially the bathroom. There was barely enough room for one person in the bathroom.
It was clean and what you would expect. The best part was it’s location within Richmond – right in downtown.

I wish I could leave zero stars. We came for the Anthem Richmond marathon, and had 4 runners with us. We were offered late checkout (and booked it). Upon arrival this option was no longer available. We were bummed to find out that we had to pack up at 6 am before the marathon and couldn’t come shower/​change after.
The manager on duty, Rebekah, was rude and could not offer an explanation for the late checkout being revoked. She did say that they would offer shower rooms for runners, which pacified us. We came back to shower immediately after finishing the race and Rebekah stated that they changed their minds and booked the rooms.
Also, parking sucks and breakfast is expensive.

The hotel lost the reservation, then took forever to figure out a solution and ended up offering a room different than what was booked/​paid for. After I reached out to corporate on Twitter, they took care of everything, but it was a pain. The worker behind the desk seemed not to know how to figure out the situation very well.
This hotel has no parking garage or lot, so you should expect to pay an additional $ 20 for valet because, well, unless you want to just abandon your car in the street, that’s your only option.
The breakfast is pretty meh, though the cookies you get upon checkin are baller.
The location, depending on why you are in Richmond, has its perks. The room itself is pretty nice, though there’s no mini fridge and the bathroom is super tiny (like the toilet is right up on you while you’re standing at the sink, so that’s weird).
It wasn’t the worst hotel by any stretch, but definitely fits the two-​star definition of «meh.»

The first time I visited this hotel, there had a been a leak and so they had fans and dehumidifiers throughout the lobby. After that bad experience, I began to stay at other hotels in the Richmond area. However, I recently decided to give this one a second chance, and I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was better. I even asked for a mini fridge in my room (because I stopped at the cheese shop in Williamsburg), and they delivered one while I was gone. This is in a prime location — walking distance to the fan and VCU, and a very short drive to Carytown.

The DoubleTree was my home when I first visited Richmond a couple years ago. I guess you can say thanks to this hotel, I’m now a proud member of RVA! I remember the people here were so pleasant, the bed so comfortable and how can you say no to the delicious chocolate chip cookies! The only downside was the parking. Parking always seems to be the issue when it comes to any downtown city. We didn’t want to pay for parking so we parked on the street. That meant we had to make sure we headed out at the right time. This place also has a gym, which is always a plus in my book. Minimal selection of weights and machines, but if you want the results, you’ll get the work in and improvise!

Booked this hotel of a Priceline bid and was very pleased with the outcome.
We had a Great experience staying at this hotel and location was perfect.
The hotel was quite busy when we stayed because of some high school sporting teams staying here, but that didn’t bother us at all.
Doubletree cookies at check in are awesome! We will never forget them.
Sucks though, being celiac and gluten free I only for to smell it :(
Thanks to this hotel stay, we found the most amazing restaurant around the corner that will never be forgotten!

Hotel has great location and good potential which earns it the third star. This place needs an overhaul on appearance and cleanliness. It would be amazing what a can of paint and some new carpeting would do for here. As for my room it wasnt ready by 3pm, had to wait in lobby. The shower in my room wouldnt drain, and the carpet had stains that looked like a wet St Benard rolled around in it. The staff wven directed me to the Jefferson hotel for a cocktail as they were short staffed and not serving them from their lobby bar. All this to say until things change, not only will i go to the Jefferson for a drink, but I’ll be bedding down there as well.

This hotel is all about location. It is right in the middle of Richmond and is all of about a five minute walk to the VCU campus. Its perfect for when you have to drop off your grown up rugrat at college and don’t want to drive back home the same day.
The staff was friendly and valet parking was $ 20 a night. The room was decent enough for a one night stay.
But, you can tell this hotel is old. There is a faint, musty smell that all old building seem to have. I noticed it both in the hallway and in our room. It isn’t so pronounced that it becomes offensive, its just «there» if you know what I mean. The bed was nice and clean but not quite as comfy as at other Hiltons I have stayed at. My wife had a hard time falling asleep, which she attributed to the pillows.
Also the bathroom was really small but there is very little Hilton can do about it. The architecture is what it is.
I didn’t pay a fortune for the room so I have no real complaints

We had a major issue with hotel management tonight. We called over a month ago to confirm we could bring our dog. We were told to bring him, and when I asked if I needed to reserve in advance they told me no. I was skeptical and asked a second time about reserving, as well as other policies like barking, crates and a few other key pet questions. They said it was no issue, just a pet fee of $ 50 which were fine with. We had a wedding to attend tonight. They put us on the non-​pet friendly floor (against their own policy) because they had too many pets tonight. Another guest complained because our dog barked, so we had to leave the wedding early (we drove 8 hours to get here). We acknowledge he barked, and would not want to disrupt any other guests, but the hotel should have had space on their pet floor. They pointed out that they comped the other guest (not my problem). They offered us a free drink, but that did not resolve the fact that we had to leave a wedding due to their ineptitude. The manager tried to pretend he was concerned about our dog, and that’s all they said when they called us about the barking. I have a voicemail from them only addressing a complaint, and it clearly shows no compassion or concern for our dog (by the way, he was fine, and barked infrequently — we waited outside the room for several minutes to observe).
Also, the room and hall carpets look old and dirty, and were moist and frayed. The bathroom door hooks are ripped off (as my wife pointed out when looking for a place to hang her dress).
The staff also had no knowledge of the wedding even though about 50 of us stayed here (we needed directions to the ceremony). They failed to give us our welcome gifts from the bride and groom. These were paid for by the bride/​groom and many guests did not receive them.
I’ve had EXCELLENT experiences at double tree hotels in the past (Philadelphia Broad street went above and beyond), but this fell well short of expectation.

Totally disgusting moist carpeting and bathroom. Bed was clean but with a barking next door we couldn’t enjoy our stay. Management said they were booked on their dog floor so they put a dog on their regular floor. Who does that?!? Would never recommend to anyone unless you are homeless.

This Doubletree is an older one and the rooms could use some updates but if you’re looking for a place to stay downtown that is reasonably priced and convenient, this hotel is a good choice.
I relied on their shuttle service to get me to work and back daily and also to take me to the capitol, dinner and even VMFA. Their shuttle drivers were super friendly and efficient. This service saved the cost of a rental car and the nightly parking fee, which paid for a night or so at the hotel.
The daily breakfast was good — the buffet had your regular continental and hot items and you were able to order eggs from your server. I also had a great room service meal of shrimp and grits. Very surprised at the quality of room service but was really appreciative after a long day of travel.
Service from the front desk was a little uneven. Definitely was ignored a few times and could have received better service there.
I’d stay here again if the other Hiltons in the area were not reasonably priced, but definitely would not be my first choice.

Certainly not the nicest Double Tree out there but it served its purpose for our needs and definitely at an affordable rate.
Nice fitness room, comfy Bed, decent sized room and a good location in Richmond.
Unfortunately, After we checked in, when my friends walked into their room, it was clear the room and bathroom hadn’t been cleaned. Kind of a bummer.
All in all, I’d recommend it though. People who worked there seemed very nice and accommodating.

DISAPPOINTING hotel. I’m a Hilton Honors Gold member. Upon check-​in they didn’t provide me with any of my amenities. Additionally, I had to request that Housekeeping vacuum the floor, in my room. There were wood chips and dust on the floor, when I checked in. The bureau drawer would not close and so maintenance propped the legs up with folded cardboard. Lastly, the heat doesn’t work properly. In order to activate it, maintenance had to pull the thermostat out of the wall, & reattach it. It still doesn’t work. The tub is very old & thus it has a yellowish film that covers it. Thank God for Lysol, because I sprayed this room from top to bottom (Floor included, after it was «vacuumed»). If I didn’t travel with my own blanket, there’s NO WAY I would have slept on the bed.
Can’t wait to go home.

Let me start off by saying that the staff here is EXCELLENT and the 3 star review does not in any way reflect on them.
As someone who lives out of hotels, I have a somewhat skewed perception of what I look for and can be quite picky:
I stayed in one of the «Hilton Honors» rooms. It is a very nice sized room, but pretty poor use of space. The furniture included a King bed, TV stand, Desk, small fridge/​microwave and one sitting chair. However it still felt a little empty, a good ¹⁄₃ of the room went to waste where there could have been a couch or a better use of space for say the bathroom which is quite small. I really had to squeeze myself inside to make room for the door to close. The décor also felt a little dates and was very literally beige. The closet was separated into two smaller closets for some reason which is just kind of inconvenient.
There is also a lack of amenities such as no guest laundry and the coffee shop that they advertise as serving Starbucks located in the lobby does not have set hours. I went down for a cup of coffee at 10am my first day only to find it had already closed.
Location is pretty good, being walking distance to a few bars and restaurants and the Landmark Theater, however I still found I had to rent a car to really do some sightseeing.
My coworkers seemed to be getting a lot more bang for their buck at the Crowne Plaza which is much larger hotel with better views, a swimming pool, guest laundry etc.

Before I begin this scathing review I want to point out two people who were very nice and accommodating. The first was Jennifer at the reception desk. She was kind and considerate, though there was apparently little she could do for the issues I brought up. The other was one of the waiters in the restaurant, his name was Jeff, who i enjoyed meeting. I have nothing but kind words to say about either of them.
Aside from those two this was one of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed at.
Some of the issues I list below are trivial, some serious. You might think the trivial ones are not worth mentioning, but the sheer number of them truly added up too much to count off as bad luck or mere coincidences. They really seem to reflect on the entire hotel and staff when combined with my other experiences.
Upon arriving and checking in I went up to my room only to find a wet paint sign on my door. Not a big deal, but this sign was not removed during the entire length of my stay, which was two nights. Furthermore, nothing had wet paint which made me wonder if it really was a room they even meant to rent out. I also found more than a dozen places on my wall, ceiling, trim, and doors which NEEDED to be painted, so I know it was not recently painted. If it was, it was a poor job indeed.
Two of the lamps were not plugged into the walls, which shouldn’t be a big deal, but it just shows how careless the room was prepared for my stay. One of the lamps, on the night stand, I could not find an outlet for. Every single lampshade was tilted at odd angles. Again, trivial but just the tip of the slimey and gross slope that I began to slide down. Adding to the décor was a bed skirt with a large hole and a few tears (and severely wrinkled, doubtfully ever washed), carpet with strings and lent on it that obviously had not been recently vaccummed, and a microwave/​fridge combo that seemed haphazardly heaped against a wall without enough outlets to plug them both into and use.
I decided to just get over it, I’m not one to expect to be pampered too much, but the room prepardness was unnerving. I plopped on the bed which was comfortable and appeared to be clean and turned on the rather nice/​large tv. As I tried to use their channel guide that was on the desk I was completely dumbfounded to find that the channels listed didn’t match the channels on the tv at all. Is this amateur hour or what? If you’re going to leave a channel guide, at least make it match the actual channels! I brought this up later to Jennifer who informed me that the channels had changed two weeks ago. Is that not enough time to print new channel guides? Trifle, sure, but it gets worse.
The bathroom appeared clean and the toiletries were accomodating (I recommend bringing your own toilet paper as theirs is incredibly thin and rough). I did notice that the caulking was done hastily and missing around the mirror. Again, minor perhaps, but I work in the commercial construction business, so I notice things like that. In addition the sink was dripping and I couldn’t make it stop. I turned the bath tub on and was appalled to see it was not draining properly. I turned it off, waited about 6 minutes for it to drain, then turned the shower on. Surprisingly, it drained fine when using the shower, but it’s an issue I logged with the front desk and didn’t go away.
I paid for the valet service ($ 18/​night not including tip) and the valets seem nice enough. Unfotunately, on two different occassions, they retrieved the wrong vehicle. I’m an understanding and patient guy and still tipped them as they were apologetic, but if they did it to me twice in two days I wonder how often it happens for other guests? Thankfully I wasn’t in a terrible rush. But for $ 36 I think I should at least expect my car to be retrieved correctly by two different valets.
After the first night I came back after a long work day ready to relax only to find my door key not working. That was pretty aggravating but I guess these things happen so I headed back to the lobby and patiently waited 15 minutes as the gentleman at the front desk checked in a couple and answered their many questions. It literally took less than 15 seconds to get my key reprogrammed but who to blame? When entering I was greeted by the same lint/​strings on the carpet, the lampshades (which I had straightened) once again tilted, and now a duster lying on my bed. At this point I actually began to find things humorous.
The second night was atrocious. I failed to mention earlier in my review that, as ironic as it may sound, I was put next to the Housekeeping room. Starting around 4:30am I was woken up by what sounded like a massive waterfall being turned on through the wall behind my bed. It scared the hell out of me. I tried to go back to sleep but it was terribly loud. Finally, after about 10 minutes it was shut off and a huge «BANG» shook my wall. Figuring that episode was over I tried to go back to sleep only to have the same no

If given the choice. stay somewhere else. This is not the modern Doubletree I hoped it would be. The staff are friendly and courteous but the building is outdated.
The exec lounge is very small and had only water in a small fridge. The décor is crying to go back to 1980.
I’m loyal to Hilton for the points but next trip to Richmond I’ll find a different Hilton property.

When you roll family deep to a previously uncharted city for the majority of our group, you need a solid hotel space to provide living quarters for a legendary weekend. And for that this Double Tree delivered impressive service, abundant amenities, and plenty of decadent cookies.
The hotel room came with everything from free wi-​fi and a good selection of channels on the television; to a 24 hour fitness center that was well maintained even if it was tiny, a nice rooftop pool, and plenty of bonus rooms for when you held everything from conferences to family occasions. The hotel bar & restaurant stood out beyond most that I’ve experienced by providing a solid breakfast buffet, a solid southern inspired menu that offered offerings that ranged from an impressive burger to shrimp & grits, and had a well stocked bar that featured local and craft beers on tap. And they had a café that offered plenty of Starbucks coffee options which I appreciated in the morning even if FourBucks isn’t my forte.
So overall Double Tree provided the perfect backdrop to a family weekend getaway, and lived up to their expectation of giving a slamming fresh baked cookie upon arrival.

I needed a hotel close to VCU for my friend’s graduation. It was good. Terrible parking options. I was okay to park on the street until a certain hour of the morning. Luckily I was getting up early for graduation so it worked out.
There was a rude sketchy security guard that stopped me and my friend when we came in around 2am on that Friday night. Apparently a celebrity was staying at our hotel and he thought we were sneaky groupies. He demanded to know our room number… whether we were really staying there. Illegal, no? Unbelievable.
I liked the greeting with the fresh baked cookies. And the Crabtree & Evelyn products. I am clearly not in favor of the invasive guard, and also a very big waste of money getting the room service breakfast. That is all.

The good: great location close to downtown, free WiFi, able to get great deals online (we got a steal of a deal via
— $ 60 a night), and there is a complimentary drop-​off shuttle service anywhere in a three mile radius of the hotel (they will also pick you up). You are also relatively close to the Richmond airport. And, the customer service was great.
The bad: rooms are not maintained very well, no mini-​fridge, small gym, valet is $ 18 a night (though you can take the car in and out as much as you want), and we had issues with the shower water not being very hot.
Overall, this is NOT the hotel if you are ‘into hotels’ and want somewhere cute or unique to stay. If you’re just looking for a place to crash, you’ve found a great place.
